SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior forward Emma Russell scored the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute of play to propel the No. 10 Syracuse field hockey team to a 2-1 overtime victory against No. 6 Duke on Saturday afternoon. It marked Russell's third game-winner in an overtime period in 2014.

"It's just awesome," head coach Ange Bradley said. "I am really happy for our kids and we had a lot of adjustments in positions and injuries. They found a way and that is the sign of a good team. It's where you finish and I hope we can stay healthy and keep growing from here."

Syracuse (11-4, 2-4) trailed early against Duke (11-5, 2-4), but never backed down for the entirety of the match. The Orange outshot its opponent, 22-5, and did not allow one Blue Devil penalty corner. The Syracuse defense was bolstered by freshmen Lies Lagerweij and Jessica Ross, who played their first games in the back for the Orange.

"I am really proud of Lies Lagerweij for stepping in there in a new position she had never played," added Bradley. "Jessica Ross coming in as a freshman as a left back, same thing. No corners against the No. 6 team in the country. No corners says a lot for the preparation. We played really well."

Duke got on the board early, scoring in the first minute of play. Blue Devils freshman forward Ashley Kristen emerged with the ball in front of the net and chipped it in to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage. That would be all the scoring Duke would find all day.

Syracuse proceeded to outshoot its opponent, 20-3 over the next 69 minutes of play. Eventually, SU broke through in the 56th minute of play. Freshman forward Laura Hurff came charging down the left side of the field and had a 1-on-1 opportunity with Duke senior goalkeeper Lauren Blazing. Hurff slid it past Blazing's right side to knot the score.

After 70 minutes of play, the two teams headed to overtime. The theatrics began early in the extra frame. Russell fired a shot on goal in the 71st minute. Blazing turned away the shot, but Russell collected her own rebound and finished it for the game-winner.

Junior goalkeeper Jess Jecko and the Orange backs did a tremendous job on the day, limiting Duke to two shots on goal. Jecko recorded one save. Her counterpart Blazing made 10 saves.

The Syracuse field hockey team wraps up its home regular season schedule on Sunday afternoon against Bucknell at 2 p.m. Seniors Lauren Brooks, Kati Nearhouse, and Jordan Page will be recognized prior to the game in their final regular season home games of their collegiate careers.
