Sorry I was gone to the land of little internet for a few days... Orange Suffers 4-2 Loss at Wake Forest First loss in the past five games WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 10 Syracuse field hockey team suffered a 4-2 setback against No. 13 Wake Forest on Saturday afternoon on the road. Junior forward Emma Russell and freshman midfielder Lieke Visser each tallied goals on the day for the Orange. Wake Forest (10-5, 3-2) jumped out to an early lead on its home turf against Syracuse (10-4, 1-4). Demon Deacons junior forwards Madi Julius and Krysta Wangerin tallied goals four minutes within each other to give the host team a 2-0 lead 24 minutes into the game. Out of the halftime break, Syracuse looked to crack the scoreboard. Visser had a great attempt on goal in the 46th minute, but was turned away with a stick save by Wake Forest junior goalkeeper Valerie Dahmen. One minute later, SU finally broke through and tallied its first goal of the day. Russell fired one in from the top of the circle to cut Wake Forest's advantage to 2-1 with more than 20 minutes to go. The Demon Deacons responded promptly, as sophomore midfielder Sarah Thornhill deflected a shot past junior goalkeeper Jess Jecko in the 51st minute of play. Syracuse would not give up so easily. SU gave the host team a dose of its own medicine as Visser deflected a shot into the goal with eight minutes left in regulation, making it a 3-2 contest. In an attempt to knot the score, Syracuse pulled Jecko for an extra field player in the 66th minute. Wake Forest was able to knock in an insurance goal during the empty net situation, handing Syracuse a 4-2 setback. Jecko finished with four stops on the day in goal for the Orange. Dahmen recorded two saves for Wake Forest. The Syracuse field hockey team returns to the pitch on Saturday, October 25 when it hosts ACC-foe Duke. The contest is set for a 1 p.m. start at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
