I'm not telling people to not let loose. What I am telling people is that they should not be surprised or disappointed that a university would not actively promote vulgarity in chants/cheers. It makes the university and community look low life. Regardless of what the numbers say, sporting events have always been intended to be family friendly. Some people deciding to get drunk and use vulgarity doesn't change that. Regardless, why does anyone want to suggest we do chants that exclude people from participating. As an adult, I chose not to take part in the chant when it became vulgar. This whole discussion began when people suggested we start things that encourage participation from the fans and has become a debate about whether we should have organized vulgarity at the exclusion of part of the fanbase. Doesn't it make sense to promote organized chants that include as many people as possible, child and adult? Is it really that difficult for people to refrain from foul language for the occasional organized chant and save it instead for their spontaneous reactions throughout the game? Notice, I have never suggested people should be required to stop swearing at games to "regulate what your kids hear." It has never been about what the kids hear. It has been about what kids, and adults that choose to not use vulgarity, can participate in. I don't understand how this has been lost on people. I have said organized chants should be kept clean enough for maximum participation and any expectation that the university should do otherwise is foolish. I am confident that if you were able to corner Dino or Wildhack and get their honest opinion they would agree.
