As always, there are some very interesting dynamics at play as we get set for the Final Four.
What would a title mean to the four remaining coaches?
Coming into this year, my ranking of active coaches with at least one championship is/was:
K (by a landslide)
Pitino
Izzo
Roy
Cal
JB
Self
Brown
Fisher
Tubby
Ollie
There's plenty of room to debate within the middle grouping, and the next week is likely to create a lot of movement.
Kruger:
Sure fire HOFer, probably even without the win. 2 FFs and 1 title. Elite 8s with 3 different teams and Sweet 16s w/ four different schools! This guy can coach. I'd slot him above Brown, who also has two Final Fours and an itinerant career. (Note that I'm not counting Brown's time in the NBA).
Wright:
2 FFs (1 title) and an elite 8 in 15 years at Nova. Clearly would slot above Ollie and Tubby. I could see arguments for being ahead of Fisher (wasn't his team in '89, FFs were vacated) and Brown (vacated in 1980).
Roy:
A win makes him the only other coach with 3 rings. That's hard to denigrate in my book. 8 FFs in 28 years. .790 win percentage. I think it would come down to Pitino vs. Roy. Both had tons of success (i.e. multiple FFs) at prominent schools, but I'd give the edge to Pitino based on the Providence years.
JB:
A win and things are real interesting. 5 FFs, 2 titles, nearly 100 wins. Would join Pitino & Roy in the club (recently vacated by Donovan). Would surely overtake Cal for the time being. I think he remains below Pitino but surpasses Roy. The hardest call would be vs. Izzo and his 7 FFs in 21 years coaching.
