Team stats and their relevance:

POSSESSION

Rebounding – (Add each team’s offensive rebounds to their opponent’s defensive rebounds. Then figure the offensive rebounds as a percentage of that)

We rebounded 367 of our 1,119 misses (30.6%). They rebounded 405 of their 1,178 misses (34.3%). We won this stat 13 times but lost it 21 times. We were 11-1 when we won the stat and 9-13 when we lost it.

Effective Offensive Rebounding - (Divide second chance points by the offensive rebounds)

We scored 334 second chance points on 361 offensive rebounds = 0.925. They scored 369/405 = 0.911. We won this stat 21 times to 13. We were 15-6 when we won it and 5-8 when we lost it.

Unforced Turnovers - (Total turnovers – the other team’s steals = unforced turnovers)

We had 424 turnovers, 224 of which were opponent steals so we had 200 ‘unforced’ errors. They had 529 turnovers, 278 of which were our steals = 251 unforced errors. We were 19-9-6 in this stat and were 11-8 when we won it, 6-3 when we lost it and 3-3 when we tied it. Obviously it’s not a very critical stat.

Points per Takeaway - (Points off turnovers divided by the number of turnovers the other team had)

We scored 618 points off of 529 turnovers = 1.168. They scored 441 points off of 424 turnovers = 1.028. We won this stat 21 times, lost it 12 times and tied once. We were 16-6 when we won it, 3-8 when we lost it and 1-0 when we tried it.

Unsettled Situations - (Effective offensive rebounding + Points per Takeaway: [Second Chance Point + Points off Turnovers] divided by [Offensive Rebounds + Opposition Turnovers)

We scored 961 points in 890 unsettled situations = 1.080. They were 810/929 = 0.872. We won this stat 21 times and lost it 13 times. We were 15-6 when we won this stat and 5-8 when we lost it.

Manufactured Possessions - (One teams rebounds + the other team’s turnovers)

We had 1186 rebounds and 528 takeaways = 1714. They had 1255 + 456 = 1711. We won this stat 16 times, lost it 16 times and tied it twice. Talk about holding your own. We were 14-2 when we won it, 5-11 when we lost it and 1-1 when we tied it. Get that ball!

“Hustle” Stats - A sponsor of the SU broadcasts has them keep track of who has the most combined rebounds, blocks and steals.

We had 1176 rebounds + 208 steals + 252 blocks = 1,636. They had 1255 + 124 + 321 = 1,700. We won this stat 18 times and lost it 16 times. We were 17-1 when we won it and 3-13 when we lost it. Who wants it more?

SCORING

Shooting - (shots made and attempted and the percentage for two point goal attempts, three point attempts and free throws)

Two-pointers

We made 534 of 1084 two point shots (49.3%). They made 452/964 (46.9%). We won the stat 21 times and lost it 13 times. We were 17-3 when we won it and 3-11 when we lost it.

Three-pointers AKA “The Outer Limits” The Outer Limits (TV Series 1963–1965) - IMDb

We hit 274 of our 824 treys, (33.3%) They hit 294/894 (32.9%). That’s right. Despite our bad start from outside and what Virginia and Baylor did to us, we hit a greater percentage of our three pointers this season than the opposition did. We won the stat 19 times and lost it 15 times. We were 15-4 when we won it and 5-10 when we lost it, so it’s an important stat but still not as important had two-point shooting.

Free-Throws

We converted 480 of 701 opportunities at the free throw line, (68.5%). They converted 459/637 (72.1%). The average D-1 NCAA team was 70.5% . So our free throw shooting and our ‘free throw defense’ both needed work. Maybe if we went to man-for-man during the free throws. We won this stat 15 times and lost it 19 times. We are 11-4 when we win it and 9-10 when we lose it.

Combined Percentages - (2 point field goal percentage + three point field goal percentage + free throw percentage, each taken out to three places and the decimal points removed)

Our combined averages were 1506 vs. 1519. We won this stat 17 times and lost it 17 times. We were 17-0, no less when we won it and 3-14 when we lost it. Put the ball in the basket!

Points - (PIP= points in the paint, POP = points outside the paint, which is total points – PIP –free throws made, TREY: points from three point shots, TZ= Twilight Zone, which is POP – TREY, two point jumpers from outside the paint, FBP = fast break points POTO= points off turnovers)

PIP or “The Inner Sanctum” Inner Sanctum (TV Series 1954– ) - IMDb

We had 812 to 760 PIP. We won this stat 20 times, lost it 13 and tied it once. We are 17-3 when we won it, 3-10 when we lost it and 0-1 when we tied it.

POP

We out-scored the opposition 1078-1024 from outside the paint. We won this stat 18 times and lost it 16 times. We were 13-5 when we won it and 7-9 when we lost it.

Trey “The Outer Limits”

We scored 842 points form the “Outer Limits” to 879. We won the stat 15 times and lost tit 19 times. We were 12-3 when we won it and 8-11 when we didn’t.

The Twilight Zone – between the paint and the three point line The Twilight Zone (TV Series 1959–1964) - IMDb

We hit 128 two point jumpers to 68, out-scoring the opposition 256-136. We won this stat 24 times, lost it 4 times and tied it 6 times. We were 15-9 when we won it, 2-3 when we lost it and 3-2 when we tie it.

POTO – points off turnovers

We’ve scored 618 points off turnovers to 441, (which strongly suggests that our zone isn’t passive. We won this stat 23 times, lost it 10 times and were even once. We were 16-7 when we won it, 3-6 when we lost it and 1-1 when we tied it.

Fast Break Points

We beat the defense down the court for 286 points to 273. We won this stat 15 times, lost it 14 and tied it 5 times. We were 12-3 when we won the stat, 6-8 when we lost it and 2-3 when we tied it.

Fast Break Percentage – (FBP/(defensive rebounds + blocks + steals)

We got 286 fast break points out of 1238 opportunities (23.1%). They got 273/1160 (23.5%). We won the stat 18 times, lost it 16 times and 12-6 when we won it and 8-6 when we lost it. This used to be a big advantage for us but not in the last 7 seasons.

First Chance/Second Chance - (FCP is First Chance Points, which is total points - second chance points – fast break points – free throws made. SCP is second chance points.)

FCP

We scored 1,271 on our initial sets to 1,146. We won this stat 20 times, lost it 13 times and tied it once. We were 15-5 when we won it, 4-9 when we lost it and 1-0 when we tied it.

SCP

We had 334 second chance points to 365. We won the stat 17 times, lost it 15 times and tied it twice. We were 10-7 when we won it, 8-7 when we lost it and 2-0 when we tied it. It hasn’t bene a decisive stat this year.

Last Possessions - (Points scored on the last full possession of a half, a game or an overtime period.)

We scored 62 points on the final possessions of halves, games or overtime to 48 for the opposition. We won the stat 15 times, lost it 11 and tied it 8. We were 8-6 when we won it, 8-3 when we lost it and 4-4 when we tied it. It just wasn’t much of a factor in season where few games came down to the buzzer.

Starters/Bench

Starters - (Total points – bench points = starters points)

Our starters out-scored the opposition 1,927-1,666. We won the stat 22 times, lost it 11 times and tied it once. We were 18-4 when we won it, 1-10 when we lost it and 1-0 when we tied it. JB likes to stick with his top guys and when they don’t out-score the other team’s starters, we are unlikely to win.

Bench Scoring

Our bench was out-scored 436-539. We won the stat 10 times, lost it 23 times and tied it once. We were 7-3 when we won it, 12-11 when we lost it and won the game where we tied it. With Dolezaj we had a bench that could compete with other teams, something rare in recent years for SU.

Assists - (The percentage of a team’s baskets that were assisted)

We assisted on 410 of 808 baskets (50.7%). They assisted on 510/746 (68.4%). We won this stat 7 times and lost it 27 times. We were 5-2 when we won it and 15-12 when we lost it. Our offense is about hitting threes and driving to the basket. I think we could share the ball more but it’s not going to produce a lot of assists and losing this stat doesn’t mean where’ going to lose the game.

Team Offensive Possession Efficiency - (Possessions: Field goals attempted - offensive rebounds + turnovers + 47.5% of free throws attempted. Efficiency is total points divided by possessions)

We scored 2,370 points in 2,293 possessions (1.034). They scored 2,307/2,289 (1.008). The winner of the game always wins this stat so we were 20-14, 20-0 when we won it, 0-14 when we lost it.

Adjusted Possession Efficiency - Using just FGA + (.475 x FTA) to treat offensive rebounds as extra possessions and turnovers as lost possessions.

We scored the same 2,370 points but on 2,239 possessions as figured out by this method, (1.059). They scored 2,307/2,157 (1.070). We won this stat 22 times and lost it 12. We were 20-2 when we won it and 0-12 when we lost it. I think it’s logical to consider a possession lost when you suffer a turnover and gained when you get an offensive rebound so there’s no need to factor them out. And you get a stat that is not always won by the winner of the game, which is more interesting as it forces you to look at the other stats as well.

Team Shooting Efficiency

Points minus missed field goals and free throws

We had a net (2370-1092-225=) 1,053 points vs. (2307-1101-170=) 1,036 when the damage of missed shots is subtracted. It’s interesting that, while this just measures shooting efficiency, the result remains wedded to the won-lost record. We won every game in which we won this stat and lost every game in which we lost it: 20-14, 20-0, 0-14. I think it reflects the decisiveness of both victories and defeats this season. In a close game the team that missed the most shots might still win if the possession stats favored them.

Points scored divided by potential points scored if every shot was good

We scored 2,370 out of a possible 5,194 points (45.6%). They scored 2,307 of a possible 5,249 points (44.0%). We won this stat 22 times and lost it 12 times. We were 20-2 when we won it and 0-12 when we lost it. JB is right: You’ve got to put the ball in the basket. If you don’t, other aspects of the game can’t make up for that deficiency.

Breakdown by Quarters - (Points scored between the beginning of the game and the 10 minute mark of the first half, then halftime, then the 10 minute mark of the second half, the end of regulation and then overtime of there was one)

We won 75 quarters, lost 58 and tied 3. We were 16-17-1 in the first quarter, 24-9-1 in the second, 21-13 in the third and 12-21-1 in the fourth. We were won the only OT period we had. The totals and averages were: 1st: 516-524 (15-15), 2nd- 610-522 (18-15), 3rd - 634-537 (19-16) 4th- 600-605 (18-18) OT: 10-6. We needed to start and finish games better.

Fouls - (Two point shots and free throws attempted per times fouled.)

Two point shots / Foul

We attempted 1,084 two point shots and were fouled 621 times (1.75). They attempted 964 two point shots and were fouled 597 times, (1.61). They were 9% more likely to get the call (175/161). We won this stat 14 times and lost it 20 times. We were 9-5 when we won it and 11-9 when we lost it, so it made a difference but not a huge one.

Free Throws / Foul

We got 696 free throws out of 621 fouls, (1.12). They got 644/605 (1.06). We won this stat 18 times and lost it 16 times. We were 10-8 when we won it and 10-6 when we lost it so it didn’t mean much.

Here are the team stats ranked by their impact on winning:

Comments: The top 5 categories and 8 of the first 9 are all about shooting. That’s why Jim Boeheim talks about it all the time. Of course the quality of the shots you get matter. But in any game there are going to be plenty of makeable shots and if you make them, you are likely to win and if you miss them, you are likely to lose. Giving a team points for putting the ball in the basket was Dr. Naismith’s first idea and I think it was probably his best one. When I first studied this about a decade ago, making and preventing two point baskets was far more important than making or preventing three point shots. That gap has closed the two point shot is still the most important one in basketball. Things that seem important, (and might be in individual games), but, in the long run aren’t that much of a factor in your final record: how the refs call the game, unforced turnovers and how well you handle the last possessions of a half or a game.
