One point the ft's were 24-7 Prov... Felt there were some charges called blocks and a few touch fouls in their favor... JB made sure to let the ref know when the fouls were 7-0 in the second half, then 8-0.

it was bad, both teams were getting in the lane with contact but only one was getting calls, on the exact same plays

how do you make a call on a drive then go to the other end of the court and ignore the same call

Terrible last night w/ the refs ... SU has been averaging only 13 fouls a game ... until last night. I was shocked at the whistles and some of the calls. At times we were playing 5 v. 8 on the floor. Terrible

terribly one-sided in the calls last night; fortunately we are good enough to not let the refs determine our fate.

That's what will happen that close to the BE offices for SU, Pitt and WVU. Wait until fball next season.

I felt the same way. There's lots of times I think the officiating stinks, but this game from the start seemed like the refs wanted to show SU what it's gpoing to get until it's able to get out of the Big East. What it honestly reminded me of was sometimes when you're in court and the judge clearly wants the other side to win (either because in the big picture he thinks they're right or because the other side is local, or because the judge ios beholden to either the plaintiffs or the defese bar). You'll get rulings in your favor once in a while, but only if the judge has no wiggle room whatsoever. Any place where he has any wiggle room, he's going to screw you. That's what it seemed like last night.

no friggin conspiracy against su-

these are big east refs-we have seen the same horrid calls against su for decades-

we might be leaving but the big east will gladly say it won a nc if su wins-

I thought Mike Roberts was worse than the other two. He seemed to me to be the one that kept blowing the whistle.

Roberts is ranked 26th among officials having officiated more than 10 games this season in fouls called per game. Ray Natali who also did the game is listed at 19th. I didn't see Bob Dontao in the top 100.

Couldn't find the ranking for most game/momentum changing piss poor calls per game. I'm sure Jim Burr would have been at the head of that list.

This is an interesting site if you want to see who the guys are and what their track records are.

The most suspect part of it was that - 'coincidentally'- on the one day that our backup center is injured... 9 fouls get called on our centers on half-ass touch fouls. Almost all 9 coming in the first 25-30 minutes.

I've said that the one thing we're taking for granted with our depth is just how irrelevant 'foul trouble' has become for our team... last night we got a taste of what we never had to deal with.

Agreed especially the first 2 on Fab. Rediculous fouls that got him opff his game and on the bench often the rest of the game. The first 2 on Rak when he was in the center were his own fault for reaching and trying to steal the ball rather than contesting. Still the next two on Rak were What fouls.
But the worst part was that when we attacked them inside we rarely got wistles on the same or more contact while they seemed to get a wistle everytime they drove the lane.

The conspiracy theory about Big East refs sticking it to SU is extremely shaky because basketball refs are not affiliated with any conferences. Referees are basically independent contractors and work as many games as they can. This means they'll typically work the same few conferences due to travel reasons, but there is no such thing as a Big East basketball ref. For example, Ray Natili has worked Northeastern at Towson, Rutgers at USF, Troy at North Texas and Appalachian St. at Miami during the last week. Only one of those games included Big East teams.

I was at the game and Mike Roberts was the ref who drew most of Boeheim's ire, especially during the second half. The two of them were going back and forth a lot.

I noticed during pre-game introductions that the Providence players (after hands slaps with their own team) shook hands with two of the three refs. Is that normal in other arenas?

Yes, players usually say hello sometime or another during warm ups or before play. I have noticed Scoop says hello to people at the scorers table as well as officials. Nothing unusual. Personally when I go to the dentist I give chest bumps, high-fives, and butt taps to hygenists, office personal, and dentists before they put me under the gas. Just a friendly hello to say, "Game On".
