Since there has been so much discussion about the inadequacies of the current, I will ask, If you could pick any 5 from SU’s past, who would they be?

Obviously it’s difficult to compare guys from previous eras, but here’s my best shot:

Gary Bugenhagen - T
Craig Wolfley - G
John Flannery - C
Roger Davis - G
John Brown - T

Pugh has to be there. Guy was quality.

Did Melvin Tuten get drafted? Weirdly i have his basketball shoes when he walked on. I won them at the annual basketball dinner. They are comically big.

Hard to compare across decades. This isn’t what you asked but I said in another thread that IMO the 2003 OL was our best all things considered. We can’t hope for much better. Look at the two deep:

Center
SR Romeo who was a four year starter
FR McCall who was a spot starter in 2006 and 2007

Guard
JR Tarullo who started 2002-04
SO Franklin who started 2003-5
SO Greene who started in 2004
FR Outten who started 2005-06

Tackle
SR Sampson who started 2001-03 and was a 7th round draft pick
JR Terry who started 2002-04 and was a 2nd round draft pick
SO Ojinnaka who started 2004-05 and was a 6th round draft pick
FR Madison who started 2005-07 at various positions

Those started were good and there was talent although young behind them

Blake Bednarz has to be on this list somewhere...He was a tough son of a #$%78.

If my math is correct, SU has had 11 offensive lineman play in the NFL from 1990 to today. That seems paltry.

Given how many all time greats we’ve had over time at SU at nearly every position, it seems like OL is the weak link.

We never have which is why we have needed scrambling QBs and a system that does not require a clean pocket.

It appears that Ojinnaka and Ken Shamrock have quite the heated rivalry going!

Joe Alexander was a 3 time All American and one of the greatest offensive linemen of the first half of the 20th century.
Pat Killorin was a 2 time All American.
Walt Sweeney was an All Pro lineman for the Chargers.
You have to include Jim Ringo. He is an NFL Hall of Famer.
Stan Walters was a two time All Pro and also played in the NFL a long time.

Those are my top 5.

Bill Horr, Roger Davis, Craig Wolfley, Dave Wohlabaugh just missed the cut.

I think Mel went to Cincinnati. I played him in basketball. His entire being is comically big.

Jim Ringo and Walt Sweeney are the top two - no doubt.
