Click on his blue nameon the left side, when the box comes up, click on the "Start a Conversation"

You can add up to 5 people. The only way to get rid of the conversation in the queue is to "leave the conversation" option in your inbox. Inbox is next to the alert link on top. The alert shows things like quotes, likes, etc...
