The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved allowing men's basketball officials to assess Class B technical fouls to players who fake being fouled, beginning in the 2022-23 season.

If a player is called for flopping, the opposing team would shoot one free throw. Previously, officials would issue a warning before assessing a technical foul in subsequent incidents judged to be flopping.

The proposal came from the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee.

The refs can’t do their jobs at a high level now adding stuff like this doesn’t solve anything. Just stop calling fouls when someone flops and the problem will go away.

I want to see it that way, but instant replay technology and ruling has helped settle things in some cases. One ref will always have a much better view of a full 12-inch contact miss by an inspired Dukie thespian than another. A timeout is just a pee break and a fridge run, anyway.

My thoughts are it will be a scare tactic to try and prevent flopping but won’t be called much at all. Maybe for the first 2 weeks to show they are serious and then it will disappear similar to the “freedom of movement” they tried to implement several years ago that went away after the first 3 weeks of the season.

Flopping isn't the only faking of fouls that goes on. Seems like shooters could be just as guilty.
Totally agree it should be called both ways. They should also call the technical on shooters who stick out their leg looking for a foul.

A friend of mine reffed soccer. He said the biggest insult he could make to a player was to make the "get up" motion with his hand after they went down like they were shot.

One thing I hate when players do is when they're dribbling fast down the court with a defender beside them, and they kind of stick up their head and shoulders really quick and slightly flail their arms to make it look like they're being fouled when nobody has touched them. And the refs instinct is generally to fall for it. Kemba Walker and Jonny Flynn were masters at this. That should be flopping.

The objective should be to get it right. I think they should add a review for the block/charge call too. I’d have loved to see a review of the CJ call that led to JB’s coat-tossing fiasco at Duke.

I agree. I also think though that instead of sticking with the call made, if it's unclear and bang bang then it becomes a no call and you go to possession. Essentially a jump ball. That way in either case if you are forcing the contact or flopping you are essentially risking possession.

I was thinking the same thing, as Mr. Girard seems to do it quite a bit, in my opinion. Based on the verbiage in the original post, it appears this would qualify as well.

Haha yeah Jonny was good at that

Not just the charge flop... the JG3 on offense flop will be 20-30 techs this year against us if he doesnt change, no doubt.

Given he will be a 2G should help some.

yeah thats why i didnt say 50 techs

my 2nd grade son has done the same thing a few times in lacrosse games calling for slashes... i let him know dad will be taking him off the field next time that happens. kind of kidding but kind of serious too. i love jg3 and i love my son significantly more... but play through contact. flailing has never helped a ref make a call in the history of sports and it just looks unprofessional.

Yeah. His brother Paul Harris used to love that move too.

Every time i see a post talking about Joe not playing the point I picture JB saying ‘hold my NA-beer.’

Well if he is playing point with adding Mintz and another year of Symir then might as well be ready to watch the NBA all winter.

I think, and hope, we'll see Judah and Sy primarily handle the ball, but I also think we'll see Joe with more responsibility than traditional shooting guards in our system. It will be like playing two lead guards. But I hope Joe is allowed to focus mostly on catch and shoot snipes. That's where he's at his best, and it's needed next year. No matter what, a combo of Judah and Joe or Sy and Joe is much better at playmaking (and getting the ball up the court) than Joe and Buddy.

Yes but to VTs point I know he is making; that should be the additional duties for Joe not primary and that hasn't happened much yet to date.
