Under the proposal, teams would be required to run a two-point conversion play after a touchdown when a game reaches a second overtime period. If a game reaches a third overtime, teams will run alternating two-point plays, instead of starting another drive at the opponent’s 25-yard line. This rules proposal is being made to limit the number of plays from scrimmage and bring the game to a conclusion.

Teams can still choose whether to kick the point after touchdown or run a two-point conversion play in the first overtime.

Could save a lot more time not stopping the clock after every play

I used to love that rule because we were playing from behind so often. But I agree that's it time to take a look at it.

This is dumb. Keep playing 15 minute quarters until there’s a winner. Someone will eventually win.

Might just want to spend less time on each review. Do we need two minutes to know conclusively that the knee was down?

the big unknown is how much time are the spending looking at a play vs waiting for other angles vs knowing the rules vs looking at other things that also can be reviewed on a play.

No it's not. The NCAA's overtime structure is designed for player safety and fairness. The NCAA believes a fatigued player is more likely to be injured and these aren't pros getting millions of dollars to play. They also believe it's unfair to have the game decided by a coin flip. That's why it's not sudden death and both teams get a chance on offense. If the NFL had its absolute druthers, every OT game would be decided by having the kickoff returned for a TD so the TV schedule isn't messed up too much.

Are you saying that if they were paid athletes that this plan would be a good one?

The NFL only keeps playing until there's a decision, without regard to the number of periods it takes, only in the playoffs. For the regular season, there is a limit to 1 OT and the game is declared a tie if there's no scoring in that OT period. I'm of the opinion that the NFL should adopt the NCAA's OT rules. They won't do it because, like I said, they hold out the hope that someone will run back the OT kickoff and end the game after 1 play.

He doesn’t mean literally. The clock stops way too often. An easy change is to adopt pro first down clock rules. Should have been changed years ago.
What's the NFL rule? Now, it stops only long enough to reset the chains on a 1st down and then starts right up again. How long is that? 10 seconds? 15 seconds? It only stops until the next snap on an OOB play in the last 2 minutes of each half. Now, go OOB, the clock stops, the ball is set for the next play, and the clock immediately starts again. Where can things be changed? Maybe put a time limit on replays?

Exactly this. The intent is to give the chain gang time to get set up, from back in the day when you had crews that were either inexperienced or new all the time. They are basically part of the crews now and know what they are doing. They are fully able to get the LOS stick down quickly on the foot of the head linesman and can stretch it out and clip it while the quick ready for play is signaled.

For high school, the stopping the clock makes MUCH more sense since you have to basically drag crews out of the stands at gunpoint sometimes to get at least 3 people.

I agree completely with using NFL rules for stopping the clock, college games are long enough just for how many passes teams are throwing nowadays, you add in stopping the clock for all first downs and these 4 hour games are going to continue to be commonplace
