This question may have been asked before...But why can't the football team give up a scholarship to help the basketball team get a key player during this time of scholarship reduction?

Because they've got their own team to worry about.

Now, if there was a player who was also a standout football player, sure. Like in the class of 2017, we're recruiting a QB from North Carolina who is also a potential D1 guard on the basketball side of things.

Technically they could but we need the football scholies just as much (if not more). Would be much easier to have "walk ons" on full "academic" scholarships.

I forget the hierarchy entirely but it's football, basketball, everything else meaning that if a player is on athletic scholarship they will count towards the highest ranking sport. Thus we can't have a scholie LAX player walk on to football team, they would then count as a football scholie that walks on for lax.

Eh, you know, hoops has carried a lot of gate and revenue while football has been down. They could help out with the scholarship situation in light of that.

You would be opening Pandora's box and coach cal would start recruiting the entire draft lottery through the UK football team.

If it was a kid that was a true two sport athlete like Mcnabb or Charlie ward I would be ok with it.

Yeah but football has been injury plagued and basketball only plays 7 players in a given year. ;)

Hey, Willie Cauley-Stein was a star WR in high school. They could have potentially pulled it off with him.

I don't think Shafer is worried about the bball program. I'd rather win some football games and let bball deal with their mess.

At the same time, we DO have one player who might decide to walk on to the hoops team: Jamal Custis. He got offered a scholarship by Larry Brown to play hoops at SMU.

This is specifically prohibited by the NCAA. Years ago teams like Miami got around the scholarship limit by signing guys to track scholarships.

Think that's why they have the hierarchy of scholarship sports in place. A kid still can, and do, run track and play football but they count as a football scholie and a walk on for track.

Football team needs help for sure...but with the number of scholarships for football, the loss of one, would have less impact...than the loss of 3 for Ball...Plus, we waste scholarships on guys in football, who never play...consider this...one of those and move on football team!!!

If he's on a football scholarship, the NCAA will make sure that he's playing football. That means football practices and meetings every day of the week. No time for basketball activities. Since both the football and basketball teams are on probation, there will be NO hanky-panky.

If he's on the football team from August until December (assuming that we make a bowl game), the basketball team will get him for maybe 6 weeks until football practice starts up again in February.

Wait Wait, McNabb was on the basketball team he joined the BBall team in December for the regularr season and played through the end of the tournament in march, offseason weight training is January and February which the basketball team provides with in season training, but spring practice is late March and April. Football Players are only allowed access to S&C guys durning January Febuary and most of March.

These dual guys would not need to join the football team again till April when I'm sure we could schedule spring practice to start, the week after the tourney.

Guess what, the football team could use a 4* WR.

This is not correct. It may be what you think. As long as the player is on scholarship in FB they can play any other NCAA sport as long they maintain eligibility. The football team needs all of its scholarships so this won't happen, but the NCAA will not make sure anybody is playing football. I mean the NCAA could give a crap if a player goes to practice or meetings c'mon.

It is not hanky-panky it is just our football team would be forfeiting a scholarship they could use otherwise. We aren't going to do this, but if your gong to say the NCAA will make sure he plays football please tell me where your basing that off?

A lot of year ago schools over recruited football players and then placed them primarily on track scholarships. Linemen were weight men, skill players sprinters, jumpers, etc. The NCAA finally stepped in when I think (very foggy memory) it was disclosed that Arkansas(?) had twenty plus football players on track scholarships who weren't participating in track practice or meets, but practicing and playing football.

B, doesn't matter because if a kid was playing multiple sports then they would have to atleast attend the games. If you play football and walkon to the basketball team the basketball team does not have to play the kid.
I don't think A means the kid has to practice they have to be in contact with teams organized activities.

Again, I know we aren't going to do this kid, but if in a pinch it could be done at schools.

Nate Robinson was recruited to Washington as a FB player and played FB as a reserve for a year. Then quit FB his 2nd year and played only BB. That 2nd year he was on a FB scholarship but only played BB. His Junior year he was moved on to BB scholarship.

The NCAA didn't say it was hanky-panky that Robinson's Soph year was on FB scholly because he was in a state of transition.
