Welcome to National Lost Penny Day!
The first US penny was minted in 1787 and was made of pure copper and was designed by Benjamin Franklin. On February 12th, 1909, marking the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth, the first Lincoln penny was issued. It was the first regular issue US coin to honor an actual person. On Lost Penny Day, gather all those pennies you have been collecting and cash them in.

Why the Lack of Snowy Owls Around the Syracuse Airport This Winter? (PS; Figura)
So, where are all the snowy owls that usually hang around Hancock International Airport during the winter?
Paul Pflanz, a Syracuse wildlife photographer, has been on the owl prowl since mid-December, checking the airport grounds out each week. His findings?
"So far, only just the one," he said. "A guy from Cornell wrote on a birder blog that it was an immature male based on head size and length of tail feathers. He had been haunting the lights and snow piles on the access road loop in the NE quadrant of the airport.
"He has been on lights near the cell phone lot and behind the airport fire station. It first showed up around Dec. 20, a bit late compared to past years."
For the past several years, wild life photographers and bird watching enthusiasts have frequently visited the during the winter months to see the owls. The airport grounds is a popular wintering spot for the birds because the landscape resembles the Arctic tundra, their home up north. It's low and flat, with short scruffy plants and grasses, and there's an abundance of small mammals and birds to eat.
Some come and go. Others stay the winter. So why only one this year?
Pat Leonard, a spokesperson for the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, said there are two possible reasons. She said snowy owls are among the "irruptive species" of birds, meaning they move out of their natural range at irregular times.

Boston Red Sox Put Giant Ski Jump in Fenway Park for 'Big Air' Event (AP)
Olympic silver medalist Devin Logan pictures herself standing atop the 140-foot ski jump that towers over Fenway Park's Green Monster, hitting her jump and then coming to a stop right about where a batter would stand.
"Sliding into home plate, coming in safe, hearing the crowd cheer like I just hit a grand slam," she said Wednesday before practicing for this week's freestyle skiing and snowboarding jumpfest at the home of the Boston Red Sox. "It's gonna be sick."
The ballpark that John Updike lauded as a "lyric little bandbox" is totally tricked out — Dude! — for Big Air at Fenway, with a concert stage where third base would be, the Red Sox batting cage converted to a room for waxing and tuning skis, and of course a 14-story ramp right in the middle of the snow-covered diamond.
More than 75 athletes from 25 countries will compete in men's and women's snowboarding and freeskiing Thursday and Friday nights, part of an attempt to bring the sport down from the mountain and into cities where more people can enjoy it. There are about a handful of Big Air events each year now on ramps made of scaffolding, the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association said.
"Putting this stadium inside Fenway Park is a bodacious, bodacious concept," said Calum Clark, a vice president of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association.
