Welcome to President's Day!
Washington's Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February, meaning it can occur the 15th through the 21st inclusive, in honor of George Washington, the first President of the United States, who was born on February 22, 1732. Colloquially, it is widely known as Presidents Day and is often an occasion to remember all the presidents, not just George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, whose birthday is also in February.[1][2] The term "Presidents Day" was coined in a deliberate attempt to change the holiday into one honoring multiple presidents.[3]

A Team From NY Finally Cracks the Top 25. Name Begins with an S. But it isn't Syracuse...
Tyler Lydon's 20 Points Helps Lead Syracuse to Victory Over Hapless BC (bostonherald.com, AP)
Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim couldn't believe all the orange-wearing fans he saw when he looked into the stands.
His team went out and gave them plenty to cheer about.
Freshman Tyler Lydon scored 10 of his season-high 20 points during a game-breaking run midway into the second half, carrying Syracuse past Boston College 75-61 on Sunday for its fifth straight win.
"I noticed it early," Boeheim said of the crowd. "You shouldn't be thinking about those things anyway. Then when I looked around, there had to be like 6,000 Syracuse fans here today. It was a great show. They follow us everywhere we go. If they can get tickets they show."
There were numerous fans clad in orange throughout Conte Forum, appearing to make up about two-thirds of the 8,606 attendance. Chants of "Let's Go Orange!" broke out on a handful of occasions, becoming especially loud during key runs.
At times, BC's bench had to get up and cheer timely plays by their teammates, making it strangely look like a road atmosphere for the home team.
Michael Gbinije scored 17 points, Malachi Richardson had 15 points and Trevor Cooney added 12 for the Orange (18-8, 8-5 Atlantic Coast Conference).
Freshman Matt Milon led Boston College (7-18, 0-12) with a season-high 25 points. Dennis Clifford added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles, who lost their 12th straight — all in league play.
The Eagles opened the second half by scoring nine of the initial 13 points to take their first lead since early in the game, 41-39, on Clifford's 3-point play with 15:44 left.

SU 75 BC 61: Second Half Shooting Lifts Orange Over Eagles (TNIAAM; Szuba)
Boston College freshman Matt Milon had only scored in double figures three times this season and hadn't done so since December. In today's game against Syracuse, the freshman guard scored 20 points in the first half on 4-4 shooting from three point territory. It seemed like Milon was in for an epic performance against Syracuse that could give the Orange a run for its money.
Syracuse got off to a slow start, but things began picking up as the half went on. Sticking with the freshman theme, Franklin Howard was given extended minutes in the first half for plays like the one below.

UL Team Showing Signs of Strain, Pitino Criticizes Player Complaining Over Lack of PT (courier-journal.com; Greer)
Louisville coach Rick Pitino took to the blog on his personal website to review his team's 71-66 loss at Notre Dame, saying the 13th-ranked Cards had to replicate their first half against the Irish for a full game when Syracuse comes to town on Wednesday.
He also addressed fifth-year senior Trey Lewis's post-game comments, in which Lewis expressed frustration about his playing time and playing with a short "leash." Lewis played 25 minutes Saturday, but he was disappointed he wasn't on the floor during a five-minute stretch in the second half when Notre Dame stormed back from an 11-point deficit.
"We need to somehow find more minutes for Deng (Adel)," Pitino wrote. "Speaking of minutes, the frustrations aired to the media by Trey is the wrong forum. I went with Quentin (Snider) and Donovan (Mitchell) in stretches because Donovan has been playing the best in practice and games. Q gets the ball moving.
"All competitors want more minutes. I’m sure Deng wants to play, Donovan wants more than 18 minutes and Anas (Mahmoud) more than 11. These guys live by Louisville First. All competitors want to be out there to help their team win, but 25 minutes is nothing to complain about. Trey is a good person who made a Cardinal mistake. It won’t be his last. On to Syracuse."
Pitino also talked about next season's schedule and shared the sheet that his staff uses to track player effort.
Thoughts on the Pitt Basketball Program (cardiachill.com; Hammett)
Obviously everyone has an opinion on the state of Pitt basketball these days. Every time Pitt loses a game, Armageddon happens over Twitter and all of the Pitt message boards, and every win just keeps people quiet until the next loss. It's a vicious and tireless cycle. Here are just some of my thoughts I've gathered from reading those opinions and takes on the issues or perceived issues at hand.
This year's team - OK, speaking entirely of this year - here is the deal. This Pitt team was picked 10th in the league. As the story goes Pitt has lost to teams like Louisville, Virginia, Purdue, Clemson, and Miami. Four of those teams currently rank in the nation's top 25. Those aren't "bad" losses, in fact at the start of the season most of those games would have been assumed losses. The fashion in which they lost some of those games are alarming though. The North Carolina State game was a bad loss in every sense of the term, even though they were picked higher than Pitt to start the year, it's clear they were overrated. As far as "good" wins go, Pitt does indeed have some of them. Winning AT Notre Dame and Florida State are good, solid top 50 RPI wins - Notre Dame actually is a top 25 win looking at it now. Beating Syracuse at home quantifies as a good win also by the metrics, and even Davidson on a neutral floor stacks up fairly well too. I'm not making those things up, they have ONE bad loss and FOUR good wins.
Rest of the Way - I have no idea how things will play out, but I suspect they don't beat North Carolina, but they may give them a good game. From there, Pitt needs to beat Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech for certain. Beyond that, they probably need to beat Syracuse and split with Duke or Louisville. I think 4-3 would get them in, but 5-2 makes things a little more comfortable on selection Sunday. The ACC Tournament is a bridge we'll have to discuss when Pitt gets there.

Downtown's Historic McCarthy Building Forever Home to Heart of Syracuse (PS; Tulloch)
Lots of people say they work in the heart of Syracuse. For many, that phrase simply refers to downtown.
For Richard Storto, however, his office is located in the literal "Heart of Syracuse," a two-story-high heart painted on the McCarthy Building at 217 South Salina St. It's quite faint after 20 years of exposure to frigid Syracuse winters.
The McCarthy Building dates to 1894. It remains a distinctive, gingerbread building downtown today, with a rich tan exterior dotted with ornamental ribbon and wreath inlays.
Since its construction, the building has housed three different department stores and a gaggle of offices. It's a bustling spot with people milling in and out of Dunkin Donuts, Liehs and Stiegerwaldand Aloha Japanese Bento Express.
Storto, an attorney with Melvin & Melvin law firm, has been working in the Heart of Syracuse since 1995. He laughed at the synchronicity, when he was named president of CNY's American Heart Association chapter from 1998 to 1999.
