Welcome to International DNA Day!
National DNA Day is a holiday celebrated on April 25. It commemorates the day in 1953 whenJames Watson, Francis Crick, Maurice Wilkins,Rosalind Franklin and colleagues published papers in the journal Nature on the structure ofDNA.[1][2][3] Furthermore, on that day in 2003 it was declared that the Human Genome Projectwas very close to complete, and "the remaining tiny gaps [we]re considered too costly to fill."[4][5]
In the United States, DNA Day was first celebrated on April 25, 2003 by proclamation of both the Senate[6] and the House of Representatives.[7] However, they only declared a one-time celebration, not an annual holiday. Every year from 2003 onward, annual DNA Day celebrations have been organized by the National Human Genome Research Institute(NHGRI), starting as early as April 23 in 2010, April 15 in 2011[8] and April 20 in 2012.[9] April 25 has since been declared "International DNA Day"[10][11][12] and "World DNA Day"[13][14] by several groups.

Reading's Walker Stepping Up Onto National Stage (cityofbasketballmove.com; Rosenfeld)
We all know the story of the local star. The one with the entire town on his shoulders. The one whose city makes him who he is only, in return, to be tossed aside and forgotten about when bigger and better things come along.
Well bigger things are certainly on the horizon for Lonnie Walker. After all, schools like Duke, North Carolina, and Syracuse don’t spend their time watching nobodies.
Over the last several weeks and months, Walker has undoubtedly earned the privilege of being recruited by the nation’s elite college basketball programs; fresh off leading Reading High School to a District 3 title and the semifinals of the PIAA Class AAAA tournament, the newly-minted Gatorade Pennsylvania Player of the Year used the first two sessions of Nike’s EYBL circuit to make his case as the best shooting guard in the 2017 class.
In catapulting Team Final to a 6-1 record over two weekends, Walker averaged 18.1 points per game to go along with 4.1 rebounds and three assists. Most impressive, though, were his shooting splits, as the 6-foot-5 Walker shot 51.1 percent from the field and made 19 of his 39 (48.7 percent) attempts from long range.
The first weekend culminated with an invitation from USA Basketball to travel to Colorado Springs and try out for the Under-18 National Team that will compete at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Chile.

Proposed Underwater Power Line Would Connect Upstate to NYC Via Erie Canal, Hudson River (PS; Knauss)
Developers will begin seeking regulatory approvals today to build a 260-mile underwater transmission line along the Erie Canal and Hudson River to carry electricity from Upstate nuclear plants, wind farms and other generators to New York City.
The project would cost nearly $1.5 billion. It would involve burying two 6 inch-diameter cables in trenches at the bottom of the waterways to carry 1,000 megawatts of power between Marcy, near Utica, to a terminus in either Brooklyn or the Bronx.
The developer, Toronto-based OneGrid Corp., plans to finance the project privately and sell capacity on the line to Upstate generators who are eager to move their power to the high-priced Downstate market, said John Douglas, CEO.
Although the proposed Empire State Connector line would be capable of transmitting power in either direction, the plan is to move power south from glutted, low-price markets in Central and Western New York to power-hungry Downstate markets.
That could improve the financial outlook for Upstate nuclear plants and wind farms, which are expected to be important for the success of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's plan to reduce carbon emissions 40 percent by 2030.
"New York is going to need a lot more transmission over the next 10 years to accomplish its climate-change objectives,'' Douglas said.
Upstate power generators have complained for decades about bottlenecks in the state's high-voltage transmission network. The lack of capacity limits the amount of power flowing south and east from Marcy to New York City, where demand outstrips supply.
But even if the Empire State Connector project proceeds smoothly, it's at least five years away from operation.
