Welcome to National Grey Day! National Grey Day is on May 26th and it is designed to celebrate all things grey! So if you stumble upon a grey dog, pet it, and if you are thinking on what to wear, pull out that grey top. Grey is very often overlooked. How many times do you hear someone say that his or her favorite color is grey? Rarely. That is why this day was made, in order to celebrate the color that we all believe we could live without. SU News Syracuse Bids Aloha to Floyd, Malachi and Teflon Dome Roof (syracusenewtimes.com; Michael) While waiting for Syracuse University to hire an athletic director who will hopefully stick around long enough for the paint to dry on the Carrier Dome renovations, let’s catch you up on other SU sports news: Malachi Caught in the Draft. Malachi Richardson, the precocious freshman guard who averaged 13.4 points per game and played a key role in the SU men’s basketball team’s run to the Final Four, will not return to Syracuse next season. Richardson signed with an agent, meaning he’ll remain in the June 23 NBA draft. With Richardson leaving and the graduation of guards Michael Gbinije (17.5 points per game) and Trevor Cooney (12.9), the Orange will lose more than 60 percent of its scoring from last season. College basketball has evolved into a guard’s game, so SU will rely heavily on returning point guard Frank Howard, freshman Tyus Battle and Colorado State transfer John Gillon, a solid 3-point shooter whose arrival a few weeks ago was a giveaway that Richardson was going pro. ... Dion Waiters Rautins' take: I think he's playing great. He's been one of the keys to their success in the postseason. Defensively, he's shined. He's really stepped up. I think he's figured out offensively that he's really got to pick his spots. He might want to be a scorer, but in this league, it's hard to be a primary scorer and on that team, it's hard to be a secondary scorer. I think he's figured out, do what you have to do and you're going to be on the floor. And if you're on the floor and winning, people notice. With the new collective bargaining and the new TV deals, he's going to get paid. Based on what he's doing right now, he's going to get paid. I think he's really smart about how he's handling his business right now. ... Greg Gard Sees Potential for Success (jsonline.com; Potrykus) Greg Gard appeared refreshed and relaxed. Meeting with reporters before a Wisconsin men's basketball golf outing at University Ridge, Gard joked about his less-than-stellar work on the links and his hectic schedule, which included throwing out the first pitch at a recent high school baseball game. "I threw a strike," Gard joked. "I think it would have got hit out, though, because it was too high. I hung it." Gard was in good humor Wednesday in part because Nigel Hayes' decision to return to UW for his final year means Gard will have a loaded roster in his first full season as full-time head coach. All five starters are set to return. The top five reserves measured by games played return. Several new faces, including two freshmen who signed in the spring, could be in the mix for playing time. Gard, who posted a 15-8 record last season after taking over for Bo Ryan, understands the potential the 2016-'17 season holds for a team that recovered from a rough start to reach the Sweet 16. ... (TNIAAM; staff) Oh sure, you can throw out Syracuse Orange athletic director candidates like Bucknell's John Hardt, Northern Illinois' Sean Frazier, or Under Armour exec and former Orange coach Nick Carperelli. You can even be one of those weirdos who wants to rehire DOC Gross. But the truth is, the best candidates have already announced themselves... I'd roll the dice on a Trevor Cooney - Rob Long co-director run. They certainly know where all the stuff is. That got us thinking about who we might pick for athletic director if we just want to make it a "fun" pick. All these people want to see "A Syracuse person" become AD, right? So let's give them Syracuse people. ... Other Cars Travel Down South Salina Street Under Christmas Decorations in the early 1960's Vintage Photos of Automobiles From Syracuse's Past (PS; photo gallery)
