Carrier Dome Renovations Could Affect Basketball Experience - Arena Digest (arenadigest.com; Spedden)
In a major move that would affect several programs, including basketball, Syracuse University is planning a $205 million renovation to the Carrier Dome. Among the changes that would be put into place include a new fixed roof, as well as technology and accessibility upgrades that would enhance the fan experience for both basketball, football, and lacrosse.
The Carrier Dome, which first opened in 1980, has hosted Syracuse Orange men’s basketball and football throughout its history, with both women’s basketball and lacrosse also playing in the facility. From the very beginning, the Carrier Dome has used a Teflon-coated, fiberglass roof that is inflatable, a structure that resembles the look and feel of the bygone Metrodome in Minneapolis.
There is more about this plan on our sister site Football Stadium Digest, but for this round of upgrades, the university is making the new roof a priority. In addition to the roof, another $100 million will be spent on updating the Carrier Dome. A release from the university in the middle of May gave a short overview of the other upgrades that could be on tap, including changes to improve accessibility to better meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.
More specifics will be released over the coming months, though there are some basketball-related upgrades that could surface. For instance, it would not be a surprise to here talk of a new videoboard. The Carrier Dome does not feature a center-hung scoreboard—which is standard at many arenas—and instead utilizes videoboards at the opposite sides of the court.
As part of the renovation plan, $105 million will be spent to replace the current roof with a fixed structure that would give the Carrier Dome a more modern look.

The Juice Online | 2016 NBA Draft Profile: Syracuse G/ Michael Gbinije (the juice; Cheng)
The NBA Draft is in June, and Syracuse has two players that will potentially get drafted. Today, we take a look at Michael Gbinije, who was one of the top players in the ACC. Gbinije led the team in scoring (17.5), assists (4.3) and steals (1.9) in his senior season.
Here is The Juice Online’s scouting report on Gbinije:
Strengths: At 6’7″, 200 pounds, possesses excellent size for a wing… Versatile player having logged time at shooting guard, small forward, and starting point guard in his senior season… Good court vision… Above average outside shooter, hitting over 39 percent from downtown in his junior and senior seasons… Ability to create his own shot and also catch-and-shoot… Fundamentally sound player with good basketball IQ… Strong enough to finish around the basket… Good defensive instincts allowed him to lead team in steals… Unselfish player who enjoys getting his teammates involved.
» Related: 2016 NBA Draft Profile: Syracuse G Malachi Richardson
Weaknesses: While Gbinije is solid in every category, he does not excel at one particular skill… Good, but not great athlete… Turnover prone, possessing 4.3:2.8 ast/TO ratio as primary ball handler… Needs to improve at the free throw line (66 percent)… As a fifth-year senior, he will be 24 heading into the next season… Upside is limited… Does not possess ability to blow by a defender at next level.
NBA Comparison: Tony Wroten. The current Knicks combo guard is a similar build (6’6″, 205 pounds) to Gbinije, and, like Gbinije, can play three different positions on the floor. Gbinije is a better shooter (Wroten has shot just 41.3 percent during his career), but Wroten has proven his ability to finish inside. Wroten has also used his size to emerge as a capable defender in the NBA.

Fate of Blue Angels show in Syracuse unknown after Tennessee crash (PS; Moriarty)
It's not yet known whether the U.S. Navy Blue Angels show in Syracuse will go on as planned next weekend, following the fatal crash of one of the team's jets in Tennessee on Thursday.
Christina Callahan, executive director of Syracuse Hancock International Airport, said she is awaiting information from the Navy regarding the crash and does not know yet know what effect the accident will have on the Syracuse airshow, which is scheduled for June 11 and 12.
"Our prayers go out to the families and everyone involved," Callahan said. "It's a sad day for the Navy."
The Navy said in a press release only that it would be conducting an investigation of the crash and that the Blue Angels performance this weekend in Smyrna, Tenn., where the crash occurred, has been canceled.
The Blue Angels were scheduled to perform with their /A-18 Hornet jets and C-130 Hercules transport plane on both days at the show, the first airshow at the airport since 2002. Approximately 40,000 people a day were expected to attend the show.
The Blue Angels stopped performing for five months after one of its pilots was killed in a crash near the end of an airshow at Beaufort Marine Corps Air Station in South Carolina on April 21, 2007.
