Welcome to Ballpoint Pen Day!

Ballpoint Pen Day is celebrated on June 10th in honor of the Bíró brothers, László and György, who are credited with the invention of the ballpoint pen. On this day, in 1943, the Bíró brothers filed an application for the patent of the ballpoint pen with the European Patent Office. These early pens became the first commercial models of the ballpoint pen. Later on, the patent rights were purchased by British Parliament and the pens were used by the Royal Air Force during World War II. The ballpoint pen serves two major functions that makes them so important: the ball acts as a cap to close in the ink and keep it from drying, and the ball lets the user control the rate at which the ink comes out of the pen. These two innovations came in very handy for the Royal Air Force because the ballpoint pens could be used without a problem at high altitudes with reduced pressure. The previously used fountain pens flooded.

Michigan State awaits word from four-star forward Taurean Thompson (mlive.com; Austin)

A drawn-out recruiting process for Michigan State's last remaining 2016 target still has no end in sight.

Taurean Thompson, a four-star forward, wrapped up an official visit to East Lansing earlier this week, and returned to his native New Jersey.

The visit was the third Thompson has taken: he has also taken trips to his other two finalists schools, Syracuse and Seton Hall.

Thompson said last week that he wanted to decide on a school and commit "right after" his Michigan State visit and that the delay in his commitment was "frustrating".

But on Thursday, his high school coach, Jason Smith, told SNY.tv that there was still no update on his situation. No announcement has been made about Thompson's decision timeline, and Thompson does not use social media.

That means Michigan State will continue to wait to see if its class of 2016, which is already ranked as the No. 4 recruiting class in the country, will grow by one.

Zzzzzzz. Zags Says No Updates on Taurean Thompson (the juice; Cheng)

SNY.tv’s very own, Adam Zagoria, recently spoke with Brewster Academy head coach Jason Smith, who said that there are no new updates with Taurean Thompson’s recruitment. Thompson had previously said that he would commit shortly after his visit to Michigan State over the past weekend. Thompson also has Seton Hall and Syracuse among his finalists.

2017 Syracuse Recruiting Targets Quade Green and Lonnie Walker Rising Through ESPN 100 (TNIAAM; Szuba)

Quade Green has impressed on the AAU circuit. So much so that he's risen to the No. 22 recruit in the ESPN 100 for the 2017 class. The rise makes Green the third best point guard in his class behind Trevon Duval and Trae Young.

Green attends Neumann-Goretti High School in Philadelphia. You might have heard, but yes that's the same high school Scoop Jardine and Rick Jackson attended! Green is currently leading the Nike EYBL circuit in assists and steals with 10.5 and 2.9 respectively. Check Green's sick nutmeg at the Pangos All-American Camp below.

9 Syracuse University alumni up for Tony Awards (PS; McMahon)

Nine Syracuse University alumni could win Tony Awards this weekend.

Graduates from the class of 1959 all the way to the class of 2006 were nominated for Tonys or produced plays and musicals nominated for an award.

Leading lady in the musical "Waitress" Jessie Mueller graduated from Syracuse in 2005. She's up for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical. Mueller took home a Tony for her performance in "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical."

Mueller studied drama in SU's College of Visual and Performing Arts.

Here are the other nominees who attended Syracuse University:

  • Jessica Genick '89 and Jennifer Namoff '06: The "Fiddler on the Roof" producers received three nominations including Best Revival of a Musical

CONGRATS to Katie, a delightful young woman who has worked so hard to achieve this break-through position.

That is a really cool story. I'm not really surprised either. JB just wants to win and if you can help him do that, I don't get the impression he cares if you're a man, woman, android, dog or a giraffe.
