Welcome to National Bourbon Day!

While bourbon whiskey has its roots in Kentucky, and continues to be primarily produced there, it is now manufactured in distilleries all over the United States. Manufacturers must meet the following requirements in order to advertise their whiskey product as "bourbon":

It must be produced in the U.S. from a grain mixture (called "mash") made up of at least 51 percent corn. It must be distilled to a maximum strength of 160 proof, bottled at a strength of at least 80 proof, and barreled for aging at no more than 125 proof. It must be aged in new, charred oak barrels. To qualify as "straight bourbon," the spirits must meet the above requirements as well as being aged for at least two years and containing no added coloring, flavoring or other spirits.

SU News

Only 3 schools can beat Syracuse basketball's 5-year run of 1st-round draft picks (PS; Waters)

Malachi Richardson could extend Syracuse University's current streak of having a player selected in the first round of the NBA draft to five years.

It's a streak that only three other schools can beat.

Syracuse's current run of first round draft picks began in 2012 when both Dion Waiters (No. 4 overall) and Fab Melo (No. 22) were selected. In 2013, Michael Carter-Williams was the 11th player taken in the draft. In 2014, the Phoenix Suns took Tyler Ennis with the No. 18 pick.

Last year, the Brooklyn Nets used the No. 29 pick on SU freshman forward Chris McCullough.

Richardson, who entered this year's NBA draft after just one year at Syracuse, has moved into the first round in most mock drafts. He's seen as a likely Top 20 pick by some.

Only Kentucky, Kansas and Duke have longer active streaks of players going in the first round of the NBA draft.

Michigan State Spartans Hoping to Add Final Piece with Taurean Thompson (btpowerhouse.com; Fritz)

It’s been a busy offseason in Lansing for Tom Izzo and there’s one thing left on the list.

Izzo and the Spartans are awaiting the decision of Taurean Thompson, who visited Michigan State recently. The four-star big man is one of the final pins to drop in the 2016 recruiting class. Thompson (No. 75) and Bruno Fernando (No. 72) are the lone members of ESPN Top 100 for the Class of 2016 that haven't committed. Thompson, a 6’9" power forward from Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, NH, is expected to make his decision at any time now.

While Syracuse has long been the favorite to land Thompson, Michigan State has joined the action late and worked to make up ground. Thompson has already visited Syracuse, Seton Hall, Connecticut and Xavier, but it never hurts to get a recruit on campus last.

Last week, Thompson told Adam Zagoria of SNY.tv that he would be committing soon after visiting Michigan State and was excited to finish the recruiting process.

Tiago Splitter takes advantage of Olympic broadcasting chance (ajc.com; Vivlamore)

Tiago Splitter is ahead of the game.

He already has a prime broadcasting job.

Still, the Hawks center spent last week getting a crash course in the new craft at Sportscaster U., a program sponsored by the NBA Players Association at Syracuse University. He will put what he learned to use when he calls basketball games during the 2016 Summer Olympics in his native Brazil in August.

Splitter had hoped to play in the Olympics but right hip surgery in February while playing his first season with the Hawks put an abrupt end to such dreams.

“I’ve thought about in in the past,” Splitter said of a possible broadcast career after his playing days are over. “I had been taking to the Players Association about doing some things. In the summer, they have a lot of programs. They have broadcasting. They have coaching, front office. They have real estate. There are a lot of things that I’ve been thinking to do and thought one day I would do the broadcasting. Then I got the invitation for the Brazilian National TV and I said ‘OK, now is the time to go there and learn more and be a little bit prepared for the Olympic Games.’ Everything worked out, let’s say it that way.”

Rochester police: Fake $100 bills circulating in region (PS; Tampone)

Police are seeing an increase in counterfeit money circulating in the Rochester area lately, according to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle.

Apparently, $1 bills are being turned into fake $100 bills. The counterfeiters are "washing" the $1 bills and then printing $100 bills on top of them, according to WHAM in Rochester.

The printing process uses real fabric that renders counterfeit detecting pens useless, the D&C said.

Counterfeiters are also putting clear tape over the bills' security strips to give them the feel of a $100 bill.

Real bills should not tear easily or feel like paper, according to the D&C. U.S. money is currently 75 percent cotton and 25 percent linen.

Real bills should also feel slightly rough, the D&C said.

Any time now. Yup.

Good choice with the National Bourbon Day. Mix it with some Ginger Ale and you have yourself a "Tomcat".
