Welcome to International Fairy Day!
It’s International Fairy Day! Today is a day for fairy believers young and old to celebrate the stories, magic, and history of the Fair Folk. For centuries, fairies have been an important part of Celtic culture. In all of the ancient legends, these mythological creatures are described as intelligent, mischievous, and magical. They have the ability to fly and cast spells, and they live in “Tír na nóg,” the land of eternal youth. Some say that humans don’t often see fairies because of the division between the two worlds, but sightings can occur at twilight or during Beltane, Mid-Summer’s Eve, or All Hallow’s Eve.

Hornets select Malachi Richardson for Kings with 22nd pick (latimes.com; AP)
After showing flashes of an NBA-level scoring ability in his freshman season, a very strong NCAA tournament added to Malachi Richardson's reputation.
Richardson was a reliable crunch-time scorer for Syracuse, though his season averages of 13.4 points and 4.3 rebounds weren’t overwhelming.
He combines a quick shooting stroke with an even quicker first step to score in different ways. It’s unclear what he’d like as a man-to-man defender, after playing in the Orange’s zone defense.

Pistons take Syracuse G/ Michael Gbinije with 49th pick in NBA draft (freep.com; Farrell)
With Henry Ellenson falling into their laps in the first round, the Detroit Pistons weren’t in the market for a power forward with the 49th pick.
So they took a wing from Syracuse who can shoot.
Michael Gbinjie is already 24-years-old, but he made it to Detroit as the 49th pick in the NBA draft Thursday night. He shot 39% over his four years for the Orangemen. He’s 6-foot-7, 205 pounds. He averaged 17.5 points per game and hit 91-for-232 threes last season (39.2%).
“This is a great, great feeling,’’ he said on a teleconference call about coming to Detroit. “I thought they put a fight (against Cleveland) or at least competed as best they could. You always want to play for a team that makes the playoffs and Detroit is a tough team.’’
The senior worked on his game and improved enough to be able to play point guard, shooting guard and some small forward.
“He can make shots, he’s going to be a good teammate and he’s going to be solid, ESPN analyst Jay Bilas said about Gbinijie.
Showing an ability to play both ends of the floor. He was named first-team All-ACC and the ACC all-first team defense. He was the 61st player in school history to score 1,000 points.

Wisdom prevails for Pistons' Michael Gbinije, 2016 NBA draft's senior citizen (mlive.com; Mayo)
The Detroit Pistons picked the old guy in the NBA draft and didn't think twice about it.
Michael Gbinije, 24, said there are pros to being the elder statesman of the incoming rookie class after the Pistons nabbed him at No. 49 overall in the second round.
"You know, you learn more," the combination guard told reporters in New York late Thursday. "You know more going into it, battle-tested, had to deal with adversity throughout my whole college career. That's the bright side of it. Obviously, you know, it's a young man's draft. But I'm just looking forward to using my wisdom and experience."
Gbinije, a fifth-year senior last season at Syracuse after spending his freshman season at Duke, will be here today for a 1 p.m. introductory press conference, along with first-round pick Henry Ellenson, the former Marquette power forward.
Gbinije's mercurial ride, from anticipated one-and-done player to a five-year collegian at two universities, culminated in a challenging senior season when he converted to full-time point guard.

Holden Observatory and the Hall of Languages were the first two buildings on the Syracuse University campus. This photo was taken in 1887.
Throwback Thursday: Syracuse University's observatory moves slowly to new home (PS; Croyle)
For over 100 years, Syracuse University's littleHolden Observatory had held its place on campus, on the edge of what was called Science Hill.
But in May, 1991, the school announced they were moving the observatory, the second-oldest building on campus, 190 feet to make room for a second building for the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs.
Despite the short distance, the move would be an elaborate undertaking. Holden weighed 320 tons, with two foot thick Onondaga limestone walls.
A Chenango County company, L.D. Dexheimer and Son, would handle the move. They had been moving houses, bridges, oil tanks, churches and more since 1921.

First guest at restored Hotel Syracuse: 'This is spectacular' (PS; Moriarty)
A Stickley Furniture sales representative from Tennessee became the first guest to check into the restored Hotel Syracuse — and called the experience "spectacular."
"I do a lot of traveling," John Kotsianas, of Knoxville, Tenn., said Thursday as he walked through the hotel's grand lobby. "I travel to six states in the southeast. This is spectacular. It's beautiful. It's one of those classic old historic hotels that people are going to want to come to and stay at."
Kotsianas is one of about 100 people who are in Syracuse for a meeting of Stickley dealers from today through Sunday.
