Welcome to National Orange Blossom Day!

National Orange Blossom Day is observed annually on June 27th. This day is set aside to enjoy Orange Blossoms for their aesthetic beauty. Orange blossoms have been used in culinary dishes, desserts, and teas worldwide. They add a slight citrus flavor to any dish!

Fragrant orange blossoms offer multiple health benefits when prepared correctly to make a tea or orange blossom water. Some of the advantages may include improved sleep, reduced anxiety and improved circulation.

Not surprisingly, the orange blossom is Florida’s state flower. Not only do the flowers result in the sweet as sunshine orange fruit, but thanks to the pollinating bees, we also get to enjoy a unique honey with a faintly orange flavor a delightful treat. The blossom’s scent goes into making perfumes and other fragrances for the home.

ACC caught in the middle of a sprint to the NBA — Jacobs (newsobserver.com; Jacobs)

Now that the major league drafts have rippled past and the pro playoffs been pursued to exhaustion, we’re ready to put the 2016 winter and spring sports seasons to rest.

Except that the playing seasons, like our interest, never really end.

Certainly college baseball, which began competition in mid-February, is still perking along, although without any of the North Carolina or ACC teams that crowded the NCAA tournament at the outset.

The ACC placed 10 squads in the field, tying the SEC for the most representatives ever in a single season. Included were N.C. State, Wake Forest and Duke, the Blue Devils for the first time since 1961, the year former Raleigh Capital and future Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski broke into the majors with the Boston Red Sox. Unfortunately, the subject of the ACC’s baseball prowess died faster than the presidential prospects of Dr. Ben Carson. Miami alone reached the World Series, only to immediately lose twice and go home.

Meanwhile, East Carolina, UNC Wilmington and Western Carolina also earned berths. The Pirates extended their stay longer than anyone else from the state, beating Virginia at Charlottesville before falling in three games on Texas Tech’s home turf.

Malachi Richardson Must Prove His Worth In Sacramento - TFB (todaysfastbreak.com; Butler)

What a difference a deep run in the NCAA tournament makes.

Following Syracuse’s loss in the ACC Tournament to rival Pittsburgh, the season appeared to be all but over. However, after the selection committee decided the Orange deserved a tournament bid, Malachi Richardson capitalized on the opportunity to showcase his skills to scouts. A strong tournament ultimately led to him being drafted No. 22 by the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night.

Syracuse endured a season rife with adversity. Several program violations led to fines, reduced scholarships, and Jim Boeheim’s nine-game suspension. However, the Orange stayed afloat, and when they heard their name on Selection Sunday, Richardson stepped forward. He did his part in helping ‘Cuse reach the Final Four for the first time since 2013. He was the team’s second-leading scorer (13.4 points per game) behind Michael Gbinije, who also had his name called on draft night.

Richardson’s ascension was largely due to his play in the NCAA Tournament. He tallied 21 points in the first game against Dayton. Then, with Syracuse on the verge of getting bounced in the Elite Eight, Richardson led his team back from a 16-point deficit with 23 points against Virginia, the No. 2-ranked defensive team in the country.

Andray Blatche Trying Out for Philippines Olympic Team (sports.inquirer.net; Castillo)

CONCEDED a slot by many since being named to the Gilas Pilipinas pool, Calvin Abueva joined LA Tenorio as the last two cuts of the squad that will try to win an Olympic berth for the country starting July 5 at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay.

After an agonizingly long wait for the announcement of coach Tab Baldwin’s “Fighting 12” Sunday night, the names of Abueva and Tenorio were left out by former Gilas captain Jimmy Alapag—certainly a surprise to many experts, most especially if Abueva’s first two national team stints are to be considered.

Andray Blatche will spearhead this batch of Nationals in the Olympic qualifier that stakes one slot to the 2016 Rio Games in August.

Thousands gather to witness Panama Canal launch $5B expansion project (photos) (PS; AP)

With a band playing and flags waving, a Chinese ship carrying more than 9,000 containers on Sunday entered the newly expanded locks that will double the Panama Canal's capacity in a multibillion-dollar bet on a bright economic future despite tough times for international shipping.

Several tug boats pulled "Cosco Shipping Panama" into the new locks at Agua Clara under a cloudy sky in Colon province, about about 50 miles north of the capital.

Thousands of Panamanians who gathered since before dawn to witness the inauguration of the canal's expansion waved the national flag as the band struck up a song.

Nearly two years late due to construction delays and labor strife, the $5.25 billion project formally launched with the transit of the 158-foot-wide (48.2 meters), 984-foot-long (300 meters), Chinese-owned container ship. It's one of the modern class of mega-vessels that will now be able to use the canal.
