Kestecher waited patiently to finally land dream job (timesunion.com; Dougherty)
After three years as an engineering major, Marc Kestecher dropped out ofSyracuse University when an opportunity arose to call play-by-play for the Albany Patroons. "I'd rather go for the experience," he said at the time.
Twenty-six years later, Kestecher parlayed that into his dream job. A 17-year employee at ESPN Radio, he was has been tabbed by the network to be its lead play-by-play voice for the NBA.
Kestecher, a Guilderland native, did a little of everything when he worked in the area. In addition to numerous play-by-play roles, he was host of a talk show on WCDA 96.3 FM and later became sports director at WPTR 1540 AM. (Both stations have subsequently changed call letters and formats.)
He left the Capital Region in 1996 for a job in Cleveland before settling in the fall of 1998 in Connecticut, near ESPN's headquarters in Bristol. When it became apparent that he would be the replacement for Kevin Calabro, who left for a TV job with thePortland Trail Blazers, Kestecher, 48, talked about his latest opportunity.

Current Syracuse basketball center Paschal Chukwu defends former Syracuse basketball center Darryl Watkins at the Melo Center earlier this week
Boeheim's Army 2016: Former Syracuse center Darryl Watkins wanted to join all the fun (PS; Ditota)
Darryl Watkins heard all about Boeheim's Army last year from his former Syracuse basketball teammates.
Demetris Nichols and Terrence Roberts explained the concept behind The Basketball Tournament and Boeheim's Army's place in the then-$1 million winner-take-all summer sweepstakes. So when Watkins returned home to New Jersey after playing professionally in France, he took an active interest.
"I ended up watching the games," he said, "and I was upset at myself that I didn't play. This year, I decided to go ahead and play."
Watkins, 31, is one of many former Syracuse players on the roster. He said he secured a spot on the team last winter, when general manager Kevin Belbey called to gauge his interest.
The purse, increased this year to $2 million, was an obvious draw. For a month's work, Watkins reasoned, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to "have a little cash in your pocket." But he also appreciated a chance to reconnect with former teammates and former Orange players. He spent a week in Syracuse with Nichols last summer, after TBT concluded. He marveled at the Melo Center facilities and reminisced about his old Syracuse playing days.
