Mars junior Robby Carmody has been on a whirlwind recruiting tour that included visits to (and offers from) Pitt, Ohio State and Syracuse in a six-day span. “Quite honestly, it's been a ton of fun,” said Robby's father, Mars coach Rob Carmody. “It's something he's dreamed about and wanted his entire life. He's worked very hard for it, but you never expect these things to happen. ... This is like being at a mini-fantasy camp for me.” The Carmodys went from watching USA win Olympic gold in basketball to talking privately with Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim, a Team USA assistant. Imagine if Robby Carmody hadn't given up football. The 6-foot-4, 203-pound junior started at safety for the Fightin' Planets as a freshman but decided last fall to concentrate on basketball year-round for the first time. After leading Mars to the PIAA Class AAA final, Robby received scholarship offers from the likes of Notre Dame, Stanford, Northwestern and Michigan. The Pistons didn’t break the bank, despite the salary cap rise that saw many teams do so, and still addressed all of their offseason needs. The Pistons came into the offseason looking to upgrade their bench, while the starting five was effective, the production clearly dropped when the second unit was on the floor.[/I] [I]The Pistons addressed these needs via the draft and free agency. The Pistons brought in Henry Ellenson and Michael Gbinije in the draft this year. Ellenson is a big man who can stretch the floor with his shooting ability and put the ball on the floor to create his own offense but he will need to improve on the defensive end of the floor in order to see playing time in his rookie year. In a time in the NBA where big men who have the ability to shoot are becoming more and more commonplace Ellenson gives the Pistons an option to run at center in a small ball line up as well as giving Andre Drummond some rest. Gbinije, who played point guard during his career at Syracuse, fits more of a wing player for the Pistons but could see time at the point too because of his experience in college at the position. He had a good outing in his first summer league game, but an injury suffered in that game caused him to sit for the rest of the league. The rest of the Pistons needs were addressed via free agency. They signed guard Ish Smith, forward Jon Leuer and center Boban Marjanovic. Smith looks to be the backup to starter Reggie Jackson, Smith is a taller point guard and although he is a journeyman in the NBA he had his best shooting year last year and is still only 28 years old. Leuer is another journeyman, the Pistons will be his fifth team in six years, but he has consistently got better each year. He had his best season, last season with the Phoenix Suns where he averaged averaging 8.5 points and 4.4 rebounds on 48 percent shooting in 19 minutes per game. Their last pickup in free agency, Marjanovic, signed with the Pistons after the San Antonio Spurs chose not to match the Pistons 3-year $21 million deal. Marjanovic only averaged 5.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in 54 games with the Spurs but his height, 7’ 2”, and willingness to do the dirty work should make sure he sees the court next season.
