With an influx of talent, they have the opportunity to do so again. Syracuse has a real reason to be excited for this upcoming season. After what appeared to be a “pity” bid into the NCAA Tournament, the Orange were awarded a 10 seed and shocked everyone. They defeated number one seed Virginia on their way to the Final Four in Houston, where they were stopped by UNC. Syracuse saw their three leading scorers depart in Michael Gbinije (17.5 points), Malachi Richardson (13.4 points) and Trevor Cooney (12.9 points). Despite losing this exceptional backcourt, the Orange can still finish in the top five of the ACC for the 2016-17 year. They return the duo of Tyler Lydon and Tyler Roberson in the front court. One reason Syracuse came alive last year was the play of Lydon down the stretch. DaJuan Coleman will also be coming back for his final year of college basketball after a strong season in 2015-16. Franklin Howard will be another familiar face returning to the Carrier Dome. A whole host of new faces will grace Syracuse in 2016-17. Let’s start with the freshmen first. Tyus Battle had originally committed to play for Michigan, but a change in heart led him to upstate New York. He was listed as the 35th overall player in ESPN’s top 100. Two more players in the top 100, Matthew Moyer (74th) and Taurean Thompson (75th), committed to play for Jim Boeheim. These newbies will get their chance to play a role in the rotation. On top of three freshman, Syracuse also received commitments from three transfers. Paschal Chukwu was the first to announce after spending one season with the Friars. Then came graduate transfer John Gillon, who played two years at Colorado State and one year at Little Rock. ... Schmitz of the Orlando Sentinel reports. Onuaku earned his invite to training camp on the strength of his performance for the Magic in summer league, during which he averaged 14.8 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 24.4 minutes per game over five appearances. A traditional back-to-the-basket big man with limited shooting range, Onuaku is probably best suited for center duties at the NBA level, but at 6-foot-9, he's a little undersized for the position. Nonetheless, the Syracuse product will attempt to distinguish himself in camp and claim one of the two or three roster spots that could be up for grabs. He joined the KLBK sports team in July of 2016 and this is his first job out of college. Michael is originally from the great state of Maryland, and grew up five minutes outside of Washington D.C. Despite being from the east coast Michael is not completely new to Texas. He spent last summer interning in the hub city with KLBK sports and the previous summer in Houston working in the sports department at KPRC-TV. Michael has family in Houston and considers Texas a second home. Michael is a proud graduate of Syracuse University where he obtained a degree in Broadcast and Digital Journalism from the S.I. Newhouse School Of Public Communications. Despite the cold temperatures and mounds of snow, Michael believes Syracuse, NY is one of the greatest places in the country. Michael is a die hard Syracuse University sports fan and as always can't wait for basketball season. When he is not working Michael will be anxiously watching his favorite sports teams, finding excuses not to go to the gym, and enjoying all West Texas has to offer.
