Golf enthusiasts look forward to this day each year. National Golf Lover’s Day is sometimes also referred to as National Golf Day. Since 1952, the PGA has held a charitable event each year for National Golf Day, which is held on varying days within the year. It is believed that the modern game of golf originated in 15th century Scotland. This is unclear and very much debated as to its ancient origins. The world’s oldest golf tournament is The Open Championship, which was first played October 17, 1860, at Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland. SU News 5 questions for Syracuse basketball heading into this season (24.7sports.com; Sigel) Believe it or not, Syracuse basketball has begun. The Orange held its first team practice of the year on Friday, marking Jim Boeheim's 41st year at the helm of SU's program. Here are five questions about the Syracuse Orange heading into the 2016-17 campaign: 1. What can Syracuse fans expect from Paschal Chukwu? When the former Providence center committed to SU, Orange fans have been waiting anxiously to see what the 7-foot-2 kid can do. He's had a full year in the program - working out, learning the offense, the 2-3 zone and getting comfortable with the coaches - which will only help him in his development. Defensively, Chukwu will be a force. He'll likely split time with redshirt senior Dajuan Coleman, which will take some pressure off. Offensively, we'll have to wait and see. He'll likely get points from offensive rebounds and put-backs, but whether he has developed a post-game and jumper is TBD. 2. Who will be the odd man out of the starting lineup? This has been the topic of conversation for some time now, but I have news for you - it won't matter. I do believe John Gillon, Andrew White, Tyler Roberson and Dajuan Coleman will all be starters come opening night against Colgate. The fifth starter is anyone's guess right now. The two likely candidates are Tyler Lydon and Tyus Battle. After the year he had last season, Tyler Lydon deserves to start - but either way he'll play 30+ minutes per game. Battle, despite being a five-star talent, is still unproven at Syracuse. Jim Boeheim could look to Lydon for the same spark off the bench this season that he gave the Orange last year. Either way, SU will be deeper than ever this year, which will make the rotation fun to keep an eye on. ... Orange Offer 5-Star Forward Billy Preston – Otto's Grove (.com; Kelly) In the past week or two, Syracuse has suddenly emerged as a player for big-time basketball talent Billy Preston. Today, Jim Boeheim visited the 6-foot-10 forward at Oak Hill, and extended an official scholarship offer, according to Scout. 2017 5-star PF Billy Preston (@nolimitbill) was offered by #Syracusebasketball today, his coach tells Scout Billy Preston, Oak Hill Academy PF - Scoutpic.twitter.com/0dShnL9vqA — CuseNation.com (@SyracuseOnScout) October 3, 2016 The big, athletic, and highly skilled power forward is a tantalizing prospect, and if Syracuse were able to pull off what would have to be considered a bit of a coup in landing him, it’d be an enormous victory on the recruiting trail. Preston is generally considered one of the top 10-15 players in the nation, and up until recently the consensus has been that USC was likely the leader for his services. If you watch his highlights, you’ll see a big, long, physically ready to compete player with good athleticism, but what really stands out is the level of skill on display. He’s got a solid jump shot, but more impressive is his ability to handle the ball. He’s got the handle of a guard on the body of, for sake of Syracuse comparison, Chris McCullough. It’s interesting to note that Preston is a high school teammate of Syracuse’s second choice at point guard, Matt Coleman. If things were to fall through with Quade Green (which is possible, but I’d wager unlikely) and the Orange were to really press for Coleman, it could conceivably give Boeheim a boost in recruiting the Los Angeles native, Preston. In any event, Syracuse will have a lot of scholarships to fill, and getting Preston would be big. His combination of size and skill is outstanding, and make him one of the more intriguing prospects in the class of 2017. John Katko has opened a 19 percentage point lead over Democratic challenger Colleen Deacon heading into the final five weeks of their campaign for Congress, according to an independent poll published Monday night. Katko, R-Camillus, is favored 53-34 percent by likely voters with the help of strong support from independent voters and Democrats, according to the Time Warner Cable News/Siena College poll. It is the first independent poll to be made public this year in the race for the 24th Congressional District seat. Katko, a first-term congressman, leads two-to-one among independent voters and has twice as much support from Democrats (28 percent) than Deacon has from Republicans (13 percent). The poll found Deacon has not yet benefited from having Hillary Clinton at the top of the Democratic ticket in New York. The 24th District's voters favor Clinton over Republican Donald Trump for president, 45-33 percent, according to the poll. ...
