Welcome to Alascattalo Day!

Once upon a time, a mild-mannered moose named Morris met a wickedly witty walrus named Wanabelle.

Morris thought right off that Wannabelle had a wonderful way with words and that her whiskers, while wacky and wiry, were wistfully welcoming as well. Wannabelle was moved by Morris' manners and his marvelous, magnetic charm, not to mention the massive mantlepiece he masqueraded upon his head.

It was love at first sight, and soon the mild-mannered moose and the witty walrus named Wannabelle were wed in the church down the way. Within sixty weeks, Morris and Wannabelle welcomed into the world a wee little weeble who made their love complete, and hence ~ the first Alascattalo was born.

Alascattalo Day is celebrated on November 21st every year. It is a day to honor humor in general and Alaskan humor in particular. The day is named after it's mascot, the Alascattalo, a genetic cross between a walrus and a moose.

Quade Green to Gerry McNamara: ‘I broke his heart today. Had to do what I had to do’
(DO; Gutirrez)

Midway through a team scrimmage Saturday night at Neumann-Goretti (Pennsylvania) High School, Quade Green walked off the court. His mother handed him a backpack as he headed into the locker room. About 15 minutes later, he came out in a navy USA sweatshirt, sweatpants and sneakers, with a white towel wrapped around his neck to shield anybody from seeing the color — blue or orange — of his undershirt.

In his backpack lay a Kentucky hat, which Green pulled out from underneath a table in the gym at Neumann-Goretti. That’s how Green, swarmed by a few hundred friends, family and community members, announced where he had decided to commit. His shirt underneath the towel was blue, too.

The lure of Kentucky, college basketball’s most successful program in terms of both all-time wins and winning percentage, quashed Syracuse’s months-long hunt for one of the top high school players in the country. Every other weekend for the past few months, Green said, Gerry McNamara visited him. Syracuse wanted the high school senior. McNamara wanted him. And in a way, SU needed the floor general, as the Orange has only one commit from the 2017 class.

Syracuse basketball recruiting: What's next after losing Quade Green to Kentucky? (PS; Waters)

It would be a cliche to say that the Syracuse coaches put all of their eggs in one basket when it came to recruiting Quade Green.

A cliche, yes, but true nonetheless.

And all those eggs cracked when Green, a highly regarded senior point guard at Neumann-Goretti High School in Philadelphia, Pa., announced on Saturday night that he had decided to play at Kentucky.

The Syracuse coaches had recruited Green for over two years, leaning on long-standing relationships at his high school, which had produced former SU players Rick Jackson and Scoop Jardine; and his AAU program.

The Syracuse coaches made Green such a priority that they elected to not offer scholarships to other quality point guards in their usual recruiting stomping grounds. They didn't offer a scholarship to Jose Alvarado, a Top 100 prospect from Christ the King High School in New York City who signed with Georgia Tech; or Isaiah Washington, also a Top 100 point guard at St. Raymond's High School in the Bronx who signed with Minnesota.

Syracuse did recruit Matt Coleman, a Top 40 prospect at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. Syracuse was in Coleman's final five schools, but the two sides mutually parted ways before Coleman could take a scheduled official visit to the SU campus.

Box office: 'Fantastic Beasts' finds No. 1 spot with $75 million opening
(PS; AP)

Harry Potter spinoff "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" cast a spell over audiences in its debut, summoning $75 million according to studio estimates Sunday and unseating "Doctor Strange" from the top spot.

Starring Eddie Redmayne and directed by Harry Potter alum David Yates, "Fantastic Beasts," a Warner Bros. release, cost around $180 million to produce, and is meant to kick off a five film franchise based on author and screenwriter J.K. Rowling's creation.

It's been scoring well with critics and audiences, who gave the film an A CinemaScore. According to the studio, 55 percent of attendees were female and 65 percent were over the age of 25.

"It's a real crowd pleaser," said Jeff Goldstein, Warner Bros.' president of domestic distribution. He noted that the film performed especially well in small to medium-sized towns across North America, and not just in the major markets.

Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst for box office tracker comScore, attributes the solid turnout to the goodwill amassed by the Harry Potter films.

While "Fantastic Beasts" doesn't quite compare to the opening weekends of the "Harry Potter" films, which averaged over $91 million in their debuts, Goldstein is hopeful for how it will play out over the Thanksgiving holiday when kids are out of school.

Indeed, it was a strong weekend for all-ages films overall in the lead-up to the holiday, with "Doctor Strange" placing second with $17.7 million and "Trolls" close behind in third with $17.5 million. The sci-fi mindbender "Arrival" took fourth with $11.8 million, while the themed comedy "Almost Christmas" rounded out t
