The Orange (7-5) takes on the Big Red (3-8) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Carrier Dome. The contest is SU’s final nonconference game before beginning Atlantic Coast Conference play on Jan. 1 at Boston College. Here’s everything you need to know about Cornell. All-time series: Syracuse leads, 90-31 Last time they played: Last season, the Orange defeated Cornell, 67-46, on Dec. 19, 2015. SU only led by four at halftime, but pulled away by outscoring the Big Red by 17 after the break. Tyler Roberson and Malachi Richardson led SU with 15 points apiece while Roberson rounded out his performance with 12 boards. Syracuse outrebounded Cornell, 48-27, and finished with 17 second-chance points compared to the Big Red’s four. Michael Gbinije, while scoring 12 points, also pitched in as a distributor with eight assists. The Cornell report: The Big Red ranks 244th of 351 Division I teams, according to Kenpom.com. Cornell has struggled this season, allowing opponents to shoot 44.9 percent from the field and getting outscored 431-360 in the first half of games. Three Big Red players average more than 10 points: Sophomore guard Matt Morgan (19.3), sophomore forward Stone Gettings (14.2) and senior guard Robert Hatter (11.6). Against Syracuse last season, Hatter scored 14 and was the only Cornell player in double digits. The Big Red doesn’t have any dangerous rebounding threats as Gettings and Hatter are tied for the team lead with 5.3 boards per game. ... There are 19 opportunities for the Orange to prove to the world, and themselves, that this tumultuous start to the season isn’t really who they are. This team wasn’t ranked 17th in the preseason for no reason—there is talent on this team. How can a team with nine quality players, not stars, but quality players be 7-5 in non-conference play? They have shown flashes of excellence, but for some reason this team cannot put a full 40 minutes together against a quality team—even a bad team such as St. Johns. The effort and heart of this team has been questioned and rightfully so. There hasn’t been an it factor from this team in terms of passion and determination. There could be because of the endless talent on the roster, but in their five losses it has looked as if the opponent needed the win more. It doesn’t matter how great of a team you are if the team doesn’t want it more than its opponent—that is how upsets happen. The Orange will be the underdog in many of their remaining 19 games, and if they want any opportunity in pulling off an upset, coach Jim Boeheim is going to need to give this team a spark they haven’t received thus far. The Orange have one more game before ACC play begins and then the real season gets underway. Right now the Orange find themselves in a deep hole to climb out of after their five disappointing losses. People have lost hope in this team, but the Orange have a chance to prove them wrong. ... Erin Williamson communicated the intensity, power, and magnetism of Eva Peron, both visually and aurally, while Liam Fitzpatrick infused real life into the character of Che, her confessor and confidante. Other standout performances by Rob Searle, Ben Sills, and Carleena Manzi made this Abel Searor-directed show a memorable experience. ...
