Today is Pepper Pot Day! Pepper pot is a thick spicy soup first created on December 29, 1777. During the Revolutionary War, the Continental Army experienced an exceptionally harsh winter in Valley Forge. The soldiers were low on food because the farmers in the area sold all their supplies to the British Army for cash rather than the weak currency that the Continental soldiers could offer.
Christopher Ludwick, the baker general of the Continental Army, gathered whatever food he could find to feed the frail soldiers. The chef was able to find scraps of tripe, meat, and some peppercorn. He mixed the ingredients together with some other seasonings and created the hot spicy soup we now know as pepper pot. It became known as "the soup that won the war."

With the shot clock winding down, Cornell’s Robert Hatter spun and rose to try and force up a shot. But he couldn’t even get the ball on the rim, as SU guard John Gillon smacked the ball away. Gillon dribbled three times forward and threw an outlet to Tyler Roberson. Roberson took one hard dribble and found a cutting Tyus Battle who soared in for a reverse layup. It took four dribbles to score two easy points.
Recently, SU could not collect fast-break points. In its blowout loss to St. John’s, the Red Storm had 18 fast-break points to SU’s five. In the seven-point loss to Georgetown, Syracuse scored only three times on its fast break. Against Boston University and in losses to Connecticut, South Carolina and Wisconsin, the Orange scored a grand total of eight transition points in 160 minutes of basketball. SU won only one of the four games.
But when Syracuse (8-5) gets out in transition like it did in its 80-56 win over against Cornell (3-9), it flourishes. It’s 6-1 when it scores more points via the fast break than its opponent. (Its only loss when it outscored an opponent in transition was a 52-50 defeat to Connecticut, a game SU won the fast-break battle a mere 2-0.) SU outscored the Big Red 16-0 on the break. Eight of those points, including the Battle reverse layup, came in the last 10 minutes of the first half when the Orange turned a slight 17-16 edge into a 42-25 halftime advantage.

NCAA Basketball: Syracuse Considered As 'Biggest Disappointment' In ACC (Isportstimes.com; Torres)
The Syracuse Orange Men's basketball team is currently considered as the "biggest disappointment" in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Holding a current record of 7-4, Syracuse had just experienced the worst defeat of their season last December 21st, when they lost to St. John's at home, by a score of 93-60. As noted in a post-game recap by Cuse.com, the game was neck-and-neck early on, as the teams were tied at 14-14. However, St. Johns pushed the pace in their favor and went on a 12-0 run, leading 26-14, as the first half ended.
From there, the Redstorm piled on more points to expand their lead. While Syracuse did trim the lead down to nine in the second half, St. John's only answered back by going on a 15-0 run. They led as much as 37 points, until Syracuse chipped away four points, until the final buzzer sounded.
Syracuse did bounce back in their game on Tuesday against Cornell, where they won with a final tally of 80-56. Point guard Marcus LoVett Jr. was the biggest contributor for the team, as he ended the night with 36 points, and six rebounds, through 3 out of 5 field goal shooting.

How CNY firefighters rescued driver after crash left car hanging over rushing river (PS; Maddox)
When firefighters in Madison County responded to a crash Monday, it was clear the situation could have been much worse.
A car had crashed off a road in Earlville, stopped only by a tree from plummeting eight feet into the rushing water below. Firefighters, however, feared the tree could give way at any moment.
"I'm not a God-fearing man, but if that tree wasn't there, we would have been doing a recovery, not a rescue," said Jamie McGregor, assistant chief of the volunteer Earlville Fire Department.
The driver had lost control of his vehicle Monday afternoon along Earlville Road and skidded toward nearby Sangerfield River. The driver's side door crashed into the tree.
"The car very likely would have flipped upside down and into the river," McGregor said.
