Welcome to Drinking Straw Day!

Marvin Chester Stone, straw inventor
Wikipedia encyclopedia tells us "Marvin Chester Stone was the inventor of the modern drinking straw." "He lived in Washington DC most of his life, until his death in 1898."

"The first drinking straws were made of dry, hollow, rye grass." "Stone, who worked in a factory that made paper cigarette holders, did not like this design because it made beverages taste like grass." "As an alternative, on January 3, 1888, he got a piece of paper from his factory." "He wrapped it around a pencil." "He coated it with wax so it would not leak or get waterlogged."

Syracuse basketball players struggling to handle this level of losing: 'It's killing me' (PS; Waters)

For many college basketball teams an 8-6 start to the season would hardly set off any alarms.

In Syracuse, the sky really does seem to be falling after Sunday's stunning 96-81 loss to Boston College dropped the Orange's record to 8-6 overall and 0-1 in the ACC.

This is a program just months removed an appearance in the NCAA's Final Four. Two years ago, Syracuse won its first 25 games. The year before that saw another Final Four run.

The Orange's 8-6 record this year marks the worst start to a season in 20 years.

Recent losses have set historical benchmarks. The 93-60 loss to St. John's was Syracuse's worst home loss in Jim Boeheim's coaching tenure. At times on Sunday, Boston College was on the verge of handing Syracuse its worst loss to an ACC opponent since joining the conference. The Eagles eventually fell four points shy of the record.

It's an unaccustomed level of losing, especially for the Syracuse players.

"It's definitely not easy,'' SU senior forward Tyler Roberson said. "Nobody likes losing. I don't think it's something any of us is used to.''

Syracuse sophomore Frank Howard said it a little more succinctly.

Boeheim on SU’s struggles: ‘I don’t really have a good explanation for it’ (TNIAAM; Sigel)

Syracuse dropped its first conference game of the season, and fell to 0-6 against Power 5 schools on Sunday as Boston College handled the Orange, 96-81.

SU is now 8-6 on the season.

“Our defense is just not good right now. We’re just not making the reads and covering the shooters,” Boeheim said after Sunday’s loss. “It’s something we’ve always been able to do, and we haven’t been able to do it this year.”

Syracuse’s defense gave up 16 3-pointers to Boston College, including seven to Ky Bowman. Bowman scored a career-high 30 points in 34 minutes. Jerome Robinson and A.J. Turner scored 22 and 16 points, respectively, and combined for seven 3’s of their own.

“I think they’re working hard and trying to do what we want them to do,” Boeheim continued. “But we’re not reading where the shooters are and if you give guys open shots in college basketball, they’re gonna make them. Boston College is a very good shooting team. We knew that coming in. We just didn’t do a good job of finding where the shooters were and they made shots. End of the story.”

The 16 3-pointers given up by Syracuse tied a school-record for most in a single game. The Orange continues to set records this season, but for all the wrong reasons.

Fifth-year senior Dajuan Coleman didn’t receive any playing time after starting each of SU’s first 13 games this season.

Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski to have back surgery, expected to miss four weeks (PS; Carlson)

Duke announced that basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski will have back surgery and is expected to miss about four weeks of games. Associate coach Jeff Capel will coach the Blue Devils in his absence.

The Blue Devils made the announcement on Monday. The surgery is scheduled for Friday, and Duke said the expected recovery time is expected to take up to four weeks. The procedue will remove a piece of herniated disc. Based on that schedule Krzyzewski should be coaching when Syracuse hosts Duke on Feb. 22.

Duke entered the year as preseason favorites to win the national title and the Blue Devils have performed well despite dealing with numerous injuries. Duke is 12-2, although it did lose its ACC opener at Virginia Tech on Saturday, falling 89-75.

Duke has gotten off to the good start despite getting just 23 minutes from Harry Giles, one of the country's top recruits, due to injuries. Star freshmen Jayson Tatum and Marques Bolden have also been limited by injuries, playing in six of the team's 14 games each.

Chicago, Doobie Brothers to co-headline 2017 tour with 3 stops in Upstate NY (PS; Tulloch)

Chicago announced its 2017 tour schedule over the weekend, and will make several stops across Upstate New York next summer.

The legendary rock band (with horns) will co-headline shows with The Doobie Brothers at Darien Lake Performing Arts Center on Tuesday, July 18, Bethel Woods Center for the Arts on Saturday, July 22 and Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC) on Tuesday, July 25.

Tickets range from $25 to $125 and will go on sale to the general public on Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. on the band's website and on Ticketmaster.com. Presale tickets will be available on LiveNation.com at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Last fall, Chicago performed a radiant set at Chevy Court to close out the 2016 New York State Fair. The energetic band performed two hours of their classic hits including "Hard Habit to Break," "Saturday in the Park," "Free" and "25 or 6 to 4."

Chicago formed in 1967 and went on to become one of the best-selling bands in the world, with more than 100 million records sold. Last April, Chicago was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They previously co-headlined tours with the Doobie Brothers in 2012 and 2009.

"North Carolina’s problem has not always been attendance, although consistent sellouts do not occur at the 21,750-seat Dean Smith Center. The average crowd through six home games this season is only 15,028, down from 18,326 last season, which ranked fourth nationally.

The Tar Heels are coming off an appearance in the national title game. They own five national championships. This is a program with eight Hall of Famers, including coach Roy Williams, Dean Smith, Bob McAdoo, Michael Jordan and James Worthy. Despite all of that, the Smith Center has been filled to only 69 percent capacity this season.

Williams’ beef with the Smith Center crowd is more about the apathy that is shown by those who attend the games. The “Wine and Cheese Crowd” at the Smith Center, as it is called, consists of older-generation wealthy donors sitting courtside with the student section further up in the stands.

The atmosphere does not compare to what rival Duke offers at the quaint 9,314-seat Cameron Indoor Stadium with students occupying one complete side of the court and the area behind both baskets.

After North Carolina’s loss at Indiana on Nov. 30, Williams lamented – as he has done several times about the Smith Center atmosphere – that he wished his team had similar vociferous support the Hoosiers enjoyed from fans at Assembly Hall.

“Gosh, I’d like to play in front of a crowd like that in the Smith Center every night other than the frickin’ Duke game,” Williams said."

Americans supposedly consume 500 millions drinking straws per day (sounds about right). Mostly made of plastic, made from petrochemicals, and molded using chemicals. I'm sure the chemical load of a plastic straw is quite small, but I have asked that my drinks not come with straws - one of the small ways to reduce the risk of cancer.
