Welcome to National Bird Day!

Why National Bird Day?
  • The beauty, songs, and flight of birds have long been sources of human inspiration.
  • Today, nearly 12 percent of the world's 9,800 bird species may face extinction within the next century, including nearly one-third of the world's 330 parrot species.
  • Birds are sentinel species whose plight serves as barometer of ecosystem health and alert system for detecting global environmental ills.
  • Many of the world's parrots and songbirds are threatened with extinction due to pressures from the illegal pet trade, disease, and habitat loss.
  • Public awareness and education about the physical and behavioral needs of birds can go far in improving the welfare of the millions of birds kept in captivity.
  • The survival and well-being of the world's birds depends upon public education and support for conservation.

Syracuse basketball avoids ugly record with win over Miami (PS; Poliquin)

Syracuse, N.Y. — Those historians in the house (and this being Syracuse basketball and all, there may have been a few scattered about the building) might have been aware that a dark past was threatened to be visited on Wednesday's frigid evening.

Jim Boeheim's current batch of Orange did, after all, enter the Carrier Dome with that ungodly 8-6 record and, considering its defensively-challenged state of affairs, was probably a 50-50 shot against the Miami Hurricanes to descend to 8-7.

» Box score

Which would have made for one of those scary time-travel kinds of moments because it had been 48 years — or since January of 1969 — since an SU hoops outfit had been as bad as all of that.

(Actually that long-ago bunch, Roy Danforth's first, was 4-11 after 15 contests, en route to its 9-16 stagger to the finish line. But the point remains that this season's edition had come very close to tumbling into a basketball ravine not seen around here since Richard Nixon was bunking in at the White House.)

State police, weather service warn motorists ahead of lake effect snow in CNY (PS; Sturtz)

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The National Weather Service and the New York State Police warned motorists Wednesday to take precautions if they are heading into the expected path of heavy lake effect snow.

A lake effect snow warning remains in effect for Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties until 5 p.m. Friday.

Wind gusts up to 50 mph are possible. And the weather service warned the public to use caution on roads as some areas could see more than three feet of snow by Friday. The largest amount of snow was expected to fall Wednesday into Thursday.

The state police echoed the weather service's warning and said it was putting out extra patrols on the state Thruway and in western New York where heavy snowfall is also expected. They also asked motorists to use caution on the roads.

"Use your best judgment to determine if driving is prudent and allow for adjustments to your schedule to ensure a safe commute or simply avoid unnecessary travel."

The governor's office said state agencies were beefing up resources for snow removal and emergency management in affected areas, including deployed extra vehicles and people to the Syracuse area to stand by in case they were needed.
