Welcome to National Cheese Lovers Day!

Today is National Cheese Lover’s Day! Did you know that the average American consumes about 31 pounds of cheese each year? If you are a self-proclaimed cheese lover, indulge in your favorite type of cheese today!

Cheese is very popular food across the world. There are more than 900 cheese types, classified by taste and texture. Here are the primary classifications and some examples: fresh cheese (ricotta); soft cheese (feta); semi-soft cheese (Fontina); semi-hard cheese (Gouda); hard cheese (Cheddar); double or triple crème cheese (Brillat-Savarin); blue cheese (Gorgonzola); washed rind cheese (Limburger); and bloomy rind cheese (Brie).

Syracuse men’s basketball opponent preview: What to know about No. 15 Notre Dame (DO; Schwedelson)

Syracuse (11-8, 3-3 Atlantic Coast) travels to South Bend, Indiana, to take on No. 15 Notre Dame (16-3, 5-1) on Saturday at noon. The Orange has yet to win a game away from the Carrier Dome and is still in search of a marquee win. A victory against the Fighting Irish would satisfy both holes in SU’s NCAA Tournament resume.

Here’s what you need to know about UND.

All-time series: Syracuse leads 29-18

Last time they played: The Orange beat the Fighting Irish, 81-66, on Jan. 28, 2016, in the Carrier Dome last season. Four SU players reached double figures and Notre Dame never came closer than within 12 points in the second half. Syracuse scored 16 first-half points off turnovers in order to build the substantial lead. Current Orange forwards Tyler Lydon and Tyler Roberson scored 15 and nine points, respectively. UND was without starting point guard Demetrius Jackson due to a hamstring injury.

The Notre Dame report: The Fighting Irish’s only losses have come to then-No. 1 Villanova, then-No. 15 Purdue and No. 10 Florida State. Notre Dame has a stellar trio leading the way in junior guard Matt Farrell, senior guard Steve Vasturia and junior forward Bonzie Colson. The three have combined to take 47.4 percent of the Fighting Irish’s field-goal attempts this season. UND averages 81.1 points per game, ranking sixth in the conference.

Basketball computers still bearish on SU men, more bullish on women (TNIAAM; Suxa)

The Men: Oh, God

When the buttons were pushed and the levers were pulled after Syracuse assaulted Cornell, the Orange were staring at a six-game stretch to start conference competition in which basketball computers assigned Syracuse a 3-3 projected record based on blended win probabilities. (The Orange were favored in all but two of those games, but with win probabilities serving as the baseline for projecting records, the expected outcome was a 3-3 effort.) Syracuse achieved that projection, but accomplished it with three borderline ridiculous games to open the stretch: Painting a turd in Chestnut Hill and racing both Miami and Pittsburgh out of the gym. Your teeth are never as white as you think they are and you’re never as poorly dressed as a teenager would lead you to believe.

The result of this maddening six-game foray into the ACC? The same 16-15 projection that the Orange faced three weeks ago, a dozen games standing between Syracuse and the worst win percentage in Jim Boeheim’s tenure.

Syracuse basketball vs. Notre Dame: 10 things to watch for (PS; photo gallery; Waters)

Notre Dame's starting lineup consists entirely of juniors and seniors. Each member of the starting five came into this season with extensive experience except for one, starting center Martinas Geben. Geben, a 6 10 junior, played in just 16 games last year and averaged 3 minutes per game.

This year, he has started every game, logging 15.9 minutes per game and averaging 4.2 points.

The rest of the Irish's starting five includes V.J. Beachem (6-8, Sr., 13.9 ppg), Bonzie Colson (6-5, Jr., 15.5 ppg), Steve Vasturia (6-6, Sr., 15.2 ppg) and Matt Farrell (6-1, Jr., 14.2 ppg).

Another Road Trip For The Syracuse Basketball Team In South Bend | FOX Sports (foxsports.com; Adler)

Can the Syracuse basketball team finally get their first road conquest of the season? Well Neil Adler is saying there’s a chance.
The Syracuse basketball squad is hoping for some good luck when it faces Notre Dame at noon on Saturday, Jan. 21, the Orange’s second brutal road match-up in a row.

The ‘Cuse (11-8, 3-3 in the ACC) is coming off a 17-point defeat at the hands of No. 9 North Carolina on Monday night in Chapel Hill.

The No. 15 Fighting Irish (16-3, 5-1 in conference competition), meanwhile, fell 83-80 at No. 10 Florida State on Wednesday night. The loss snapped Notre Dame’s seven-game winning streak and placed the Fighting Irish into a three-team tie atop the Atlantic Coast Conference standings, along with the Tar Heels and the Seminoles.

Notre Dame sports a terrific resume at this juncture. Strong successes include No. 12 Louisville and Clemson at home; Miami, Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech on the road; and Colorado as well as Northwestern on neutral-courts.

Even the Fighting Irish’s setbacks are impressive; to the aforementioned Florida State on the road, as well as to No. 1 Villanova (by eight points) and No. 21 Purdue (by five points), both at neutral-sites.

I won’t bother discussing Syracuse’s resume, because it will only make my head hurt.

Head coach Mike Brey, a former long-time assistant at Duke to the legendary Mike Krzyzewski,
has served at Notre Dame’s helm since the 2000-01 season, helping to turn the well-known football school into a basketball powerhouse as well.
