pay-a-compliment-day.jpg

Welcome to Pay-a-Compliment Day!

What a wonderful way to brighten someone’s day or to give credit for a job well done! Give an extra compliment on National Compliment Day which is observed annually on January 24.

A compliment has a powerful effect. It can instill confidence in a child, or validate someone’s hard work. A compliment not only improves the receiver’s mood, but it also says something about the giver. It tells them you noticed. Whether we recognize someone’s achievement or their classic style, a compliment can go a long way.

To give a great compliment, first be sincere. People have a way of knowing when we are fake. If you don’t mean it, it’s worse than getting a thoughtless birthday gift.

Editor's Note: You are good looking, intelligent and your posture is top notch too!

SU News

SU went from dead to very much alive in 11 days (TNIAAM; Sigel)

Just two weeks ago, Syracuse basketball’s season was done. Dead. Finished. It was over.

Admit it — you said it. We all did.

It wasn’t anyone going out on a limb or being unrealistic — the season seemed over. Nothing was going right, and the bad losses overshadowed the one, maybe two, decent wins the Orange had.

And then a Tuesday matchup with Wake Forest at the Carrier Dome kept the door slightly open. The Orange won, 81-76, after being down by eight points in the second half. Andrew White had 27 points, Taurean Thompson finished with 18 points, and 16 of them came in the latter 20 minutes. It was a good win, but nothing to write home about. There was still work to be done.

Fast forward to the following Saturday when Syracuse welcomed then-No. 6 Florida State to the Carrier Dome. SU outscored FSU 44-26 in the first half. The Orange struggled a bit in the second half, but ultimately held on for a 10-point victory. This win raised some eyebrows, but some overlooked it. The Seminoles were coming off of a 22-point loss to Georgia Tech, and some say the Orange caught FSU at the right time. Maybe so — but it was a win, nonetheless. SU was 13-9 (5-4) on the year.

No. 9 Virginia falls to Syracuse, 66-62 (streakingthelawn.com; Leung)

Virginia dropped its third ACC game of the season, falling 66-62 at Syracuse on Saturday afternoon. The Orange win gave Jim Boeheim his 1,000th career coaching win.

The Hoos had a strong first half, heading into the locker room with a 34-22 lead.

But for anyone who watched last March’s matchup between Syracuse and Virginia, the Cavaliers’ 12-point lead at the half felt anything but safe. A seven-minute Virginia scoring drought to open up the second half confirmed all the Wahoos’ fears, as the Orange came out with a 19-2 run to take their first lead of the afternoon.

Virginia came out with complete offensive lackluster in the second half. Jack Salt struggled all day under the basket to convert anything into points. London Perrantes perhaps tried a little too hard to create an opening in the zone defense with dribble penetration.

The Hoos, who came into day ranked second in the country with just 9.6 turnovers a game, committed a whopping 15 of them. Virginia only found its way to the charity stripe five times on the afternoon, compared to Syracuse’s 20 free throw attempts.

Evaluating Syracuse’s NCAA Tournament Chances After Toppling Virginia | Orange Fizz - Free Syracuse Recruiting News, Always Looking at the Future of the Orange (orangefizz.net; Carter)

In hindsight, we probably should have seen this coming.

This year’s iteration of Syracuse men’s basketball was always far too talented to remain in the dregs of the ACC. Grad transfers Andrew White III and John Gillon accompanied a solid incoming freshman class, joining forces with Tyler Lydon, one of the nation’s most promising returning players. Before the season began, Jim Boeheim called it “the best team we’ve had in a long time.”

That proclamation seemed downright delusional as the season progressed; the Orange racked up bad loss after bad loss, and when SU opened ACC play with a loss to the league’s laughingstock after a putrid non-conference performance, it felt like the team’s NCAA Tournament chances had all but swirled down the toilet. Its loss at Notre Dame dropped Syracuse to 11-9 (0-7 away from the Carrier Dome); that’s NIT bubble territory.

Now, exactly two weeks later, the Orange may have a better than 50 percent chance of going to the Big Dance. Boeheim’s bunch has rattled off four consecutive wins, and they’ve been arguably SU’s most impressive victories of the campaign. First, the ‘Cuse demonstrated a newfound ability to hang on down the stretch against a good team, outlasting Wake Forest, 81-76.

Next, the Orange picked up its first win over a ranked opponent when it toppled No. 6 Florida State, and added a road victory to its résumé a few days later at NC State. Then, on Saturday afternoon, Syracuse’s season crescendoed to a peak: it stunned No. 9 Virginia, 66-62 (sound eerily familiar?), offering fans another glimmer of hope and reigniting its March Madness chances. The Cavaliers are even better than that ranking suggests — they’re the second-best team in the nation, according to KenPom.com.

Adorable Syracuse Basketball Fan Rages During Jim Boeheim's 1,000th* Win (herosprts.com; Mahoney)

Syracuse came back from a 12-point halftime deficit to beat Virginia 66-62 at home Saturday. It was either the 899th or 1,000th win in the storied career of Orange head coach Jim Boeheim, depending on how you feel about the 101 wins the NCAA vacated for his use of ineligible players in the mid-2000's.

The Syracuse head coach, now in his 31st year with the team, was practically glowing in an on-court post-game interview.

"I came here when I was 17 years old, and I'm still here, which is kind of hard to believe," Boeheim told ESPN. "But it's been a great run. I've had great players, great coaches. This might be one of our best wins ever."

The mood was all-around positive after the comeback win. During the game though? That's another story. One of the youngest Syracuse fans showed her anger most adorably:

Syracuse continues NCAA Tournament push with upset of Virginia - The Juice Online (the juice; Stechschulte)

For the second straight Saturday, Syracuse claimed a huge upset at the Carrier Dome, this time holding off #9 Virginia, 66-62. The win is the fourth in a row for the Orange, who not only improved to 15-9 overall and 7-4 in the ACC, but moved into position for more consideration for an NCAA Tournament invitation.

In a game of runs before heading to a taut finish, the Cavaliers (17-5, 7-3) were in front for almost the entire first half and held a 12-point lead just at halftime before SU came roaring back. Syracuse opened the second half a 19-2 run to take the lead, then made 9-of-10 foul shots in the final 3:17 to hold on for the win.

Virginia owned the opening five minutes, grabbing a 9-2 lead before the Orange could counter. And counter they did, as SU rolled up seven straight points to knot the score. Tyus Battle opened the burst with a triple and closed it with a lay-up on the heels of a Tyler Roberson score, wiping out the Cavalier lead in little more than a minute.

Most of the remainder of the opening half followed a script of Virginia opening up a lead and Syracuse surging back to tie the score. The Cavaliers changed the path of the game by owning the final seven minutes of the first half, closing the session with a 15-3 burst, including eight straight points before the buzzer, to head to the locker room with a 34-22 lead.

The Orange responded by shredding the best college defense in the country, shooting over 73 percent from the floor after returning from the locker room.

WATCH: St. Bonaventure takes heartbreaking loss after fans prematurely storm court (PS; Axelson)

The St. Bonaventure men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking loss after a technical foul forced the game into overtime after fans had already rushed the court in celebration.

Take a look in the video.

St Bonaventure vs VCU - Final 3 Seconds in Regulation - February 4, 2017
Deadspin, Fox Sports and other outlets originally reported that the technical foul was called due to fan interference with 0.4 seconds left on the clock.

St. Bonaventure's Matt Mobley hit what would have been a game-winning three with 3.2 seconds left, and over-eager fans supposedly made it impossible to finish the last half second of play. Officials cited "crowd interference" for giving out the technical which allowed VCU to tie the game at 66-66, and send it into overtime which eventually led to an 83-77 loss for St. Bonaventure.

The Atlantic 10 Conference later clarified the call, and said fans actually had nothing to do with it. Instead, it was a single individual who grabbed the game ball before the clock ticked down, causing a VCU player to have to chase him down to recover it.
