Welcome to International Pancake Day!
Many people are familiar with Mardi gras celebrations on the day before Lent. But in Liberal, Kansas, the day before Lent means just one thing – it’s Pancake Day.
In Olney, England, the Pancake Race tradition dates back more than 500 years to 1445. A woman engrossed in using up cooking fats (forbidden during Lent) was making pancakes. Hearing the church bells ring calling everyone to the shriving service, she grabbed her head scarf (required in church) and ran to the church, skillet and pancake in hand and still apron-clad. In following years, neighbors got into the act and it became a race to see who could reach the church first and collect a "Kiss of Peace" from the verger (bell-ringer.)
The friendly little competition between Liberal, Kansas, and Olney, England, with women running down the streets of each town flipping pancakes, has been going on for more than 60 years now. It is still the only race of its kind on the planet.

Tyus Battle lost 6 pounds while he was sick, but soup and sleep got him better (PS; Waters)
The loss to Louisville was bad, but Tyus Battle was feeling good. Physically, that is.
In the visiting team's locker room following Syracuse's 88-68 loss to Louisville at the KFC Yum Center on Sunday, Battle was as downcast as the rest of his teammates, but he had one good reason to be upbeat. He was healthy again.
Battle scored a team-high 20 points in the loss to the 7th-ranked Cardinals. It marked his second straight solid performance, coming on the heels of his 18-point outing in Syracuse's win over Duke last Wednesday.
The two games certified that Battle, who had seen his play drop off as he struggled with a persistent cold, was back on his feet.
"I feel a lot better,'' Battle said. "A lot better. Two or three weeks ago, I had no energy. But I feel good now. I feel 100 percent.''

Georgia Tech Basketball Hosts Pittsburgh for Senior Night (ramblinwreck.com)
Georgia Tech closes out its regular-season home schedule Tuesday night, honoring six senior players before a nationally-televised Atlantic Coast Conference game at 9 p.m. at McCamish Pavilion.
Tech (16-13, 7-9 ACC), which has defied pre-season projections in its first season under head coach Josh Pastner, has dropped five of its last seven ACC games, defeating Syracuse and Boston College during that stretch. The Yellow Jackets, 14-4 on the road this season, entered this week's games tied for 10th place in the ACC standings with Wake Forest.
Pittsburgh (15-14, 4-12 ACC) has split its last six ACC games, falling at home Saturday to North Carolina, 85-67. The Panthers, 1-6 on the road in ACC play this season, had lost eight in a row prior. They are in a three-way tie for 12th place in the ACC standings.
Tuesday's game will be televised on ESPNU and will be streamed live online on the WatchESPN app. Radio coverage is provided by Tech's flagship station, 680 the Fan (680 AM/93.7 FM), and is available via satellite radio (Sirius ch. 81, XM ch. 81).
THE STARTING LINEUP
• Georgia Tech will honor six senior players and one senior manager Tuesday night on the occasion of their final home game at McCamish Pavilion - graduate transfers Kellen McCormick and Jodan Price, Josh Heath, who played three years at Tech after transferring from South Florida, and four-year seniors Rand Rowland, Corey Heyward and Quinton Stephens.
• The four games between Tech and Pittsburgh since the Panthers joined the ACC have been decided by an average of 5.3 points. Pitt's 81-74 win in the first meeting is the largest margin of victory.

THB Staff Picks: ACC Basketball Week of 2/27/17 (tarheelblog.com; Cohen)
This past week, North Carolina defeated Louisville by 11 points and blew out Pitt by almost 20 to win their last four games in a row. Duke also lost to Syracuse and Miami, allowing UNC to clinch the no. 1 seed in the ACC Tournament. Louisville, Florida State, Notre Dame, and Duke will compete for the remaining top seeds, with the first three all sitting at 11-5, while the Blue Devils are at 10-6.
The Tar Heels head into the final week of the season with a 13-3 record. They must win one of their games in order to be declared the ACC winner. Losing both games will open them up for the possibility of having to share the regular season title with another team.
UNC will face Virginia on the road later tonight. They will then head back home to face Duke on Saturday to finish out the season. This week Louisville will face Wake forest and Notre Dame. The Seminoles will face Duke and Miami. Notre Dame will also go up against Boston College.
The tournament might be in sight but it’s still important to play through to the end here. Hopefully the Tar Heels can finish strong and beat Duke this time around.
ACC Basketball: Virginia holds UNC to 43 points to avenge previous loss (bustingbrackets.com; Carcieri)
Virginia locked up defensively to knock off the ACC basketball league’s top team, North Carolina.
23 VIRGINIA CAVALIERS

5 NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELS

It’s tough to beat a team twice in a matter of nine days. It’s even more difficult to do if that team is the Virginia Cavaliers.
RELATED STORY: Louisville suffocates Syracuse with elite defense
North Carolina found that out the hard way on Monday evening as the Tar Heels were bullied in Charlottesville, losing 53-43 to the No. 23 team in the country. Roy Williams’ unit had a shot to earn their second straight outright ACC regular-season title but were held to just 43 points (43 points!), which is the lowest total that the Tar Heels have ever scored under Williams.
UNC is one of the best offensive teams in the nation (they average 86.4 points per game) but on Monday, they turned the ball over 14 times, shot just 35 percent from the field and 25 percent from three, and had just one player (Joel Berry II — 12 points) who scored in double figures. London Perrantes is six inches shorter than Justin Jackson, however, he took the assignment upon himself to limit the junior’s air space and kept the ball out of his hands for the most part. Jackson, North Carolina’s leading scorer, finished with just seven points on 3-of-10 shooting.
It wasn’t just Jackson, though. Virginia also flustered Kennedy Meeks, who was forcing shots before double teams came his way, and Isaiah Hicks. Berry didn’t start scoring some buckets until late in the game and Theo Pinson was a non-factor in terms of scoring.

Syracuse Basketball: Have Teams Figured Out Andrew White? (insidetheloudhouse.com; Edsen Jr)
What is wrong with Andrew White? White has been the heartbeat of the Syracuse basketball team all season, but have teams figured him out?
This is the thought I came away with following the loss to the Louisville Cardinals on Sunday afternoon 88-68. Up until this recent two game slide, Andrew White III has been the catalyst of the cardiac Cuse attack this season.
White has scored 17 or more points in the previous six games before combining for just 14 points in the last two games. Are teams trying something different to defend him?
Not according to Syracuse basketball head coach, Jim Boeheim…
“No they’re just staying with him and he’s got to put it on the floor. If they’re going to switch on him the past two games, okay. He’s just got to put the floor on those situations.”
Maybe the coach is right, players go through slumps it’s just the nature of the game. While that
remained a strong possibility until I heard Louisville head basketball coach, Rick Pitino and his explanation of what they were trying to do.

Fat Tuesday: Thousands throng to New Orleans for Mardi Gras celebrations (AP)
The streets of New Orleans will be filled Tuesday with costumed revelers, dazzling floats featuring kings and queens, and people of all ages screaming for trinkets and beads. Lots of beads.
Tuesday marks the culmination of the Carnival season, which started Jan. 6.
The biggest parades take place along the St. Charles Avenue parade route, where the Krewe of Zulu kicks off the morning's parades and is followed by the Krewe of Rex.
Families, tourists and locals set up their chairs and ladders early to get a good seat for catching the trinkets thrown by riders on the floats. The hand-crafted coconuts handed out by members of Zulu are particularly sought-after.
In another part of the city, people dressed in elaborate costumes take part in the St. Anne's parade -- an eclectic walking parade that starts in the Bywater and Marigny neighborhoods and ends in the French Quarter.
