Welcome to Panic Day!

Try to stay calm. Take a deep breath. For today is Panic Day. Can you handle today? Good, we were worried for a moment.

Hopefully, everything is going just swell in your life, and you have no need for this day. But, if problems and troubles are looming, try to hold off hitting the panic button until this day arrives.

Don't worry. Don't fret. and, above all, don't panic. However, if ever there was a day to panic, today is that day.

As you get through this unsettling day, you have another day to worry about....International Panic Day.

2017 ACC Tournament: Five takeaways from Miami’s 62-57 win over Syracuse (mypalmbeachpost.com; Porter)

The Hurricanes opened the ACC Tournament with a bang, snatching a 62-57 win over Syracuse as the underdog in a noontime Wednesday 8-vs.-9 matchup at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The Hurricanes (21-10), who like Syracuse (18-14) went 10-8 in regular-season conference play, meet top-seeded and sixth-ranked North Carolina at noon Thursday. That game, a rematch of Miami’s 77-62 win in Coral Gables over the ninth-ranked Tar Heels on Jan. 28, could help boost UM even higher come Selection Sunday.

Five takeaways:

Hot start, shaky close: Miami won this game based on its first 20, not last 20. The Hurricanes shot 62 percent from the floor in the first half, its best first half of shooting this season, and made 6-of-11 threes (55 percent). Nearly half of Miami’s 21 field goal attempts were from the outside.

But Syracuse went on a 13-4 run to start the second half and briefly took the lead, thanks in part to Miami’s 2-of-12 shooting start.

Coach Jim Larranaga said on ACC Network after that Cuse’s defense wouldn’t let Miami get the ball to the paint, “but D.J. Vasiljevic has great range, and we threw it to him and he made the threes.”

Ed Hardin: With Syracuse's classless exit, what's next in Brooklyn? (Video) (greensboro.com; Hardin)

Start spreading the news. There are tickets to be had at the ACC tournament.

Syracuse and its mouthy coach are gone, the host school having exited on the very day it arrived at a party thrown just for the Orange.

Now whose tournament is it?

The Virginians arrived tonight, and Carolina comes to Brooklyn on Thursday. The ACC’s first venture across the Mason-Dixon line has lost its target audience. Once again, it’s up the original members to save the day.

Duke, the region’s adopted school, walked its own thin line before limping past Clemson 79-72 to set up Thursday's first big-time clash between major powers. Louisville has its own legion of fans here this week, and the Cardinals have the reserves to take over Barclays Arena if they make it to the weekend.

The subways were filled today with fans making their way to the second day of the 64th ACC tournament. Duke fans mingled with Clemson fans, and Syracuse fans dressed in orange came fashionably late. In fact, some of them didn’t show at all.

The ACC needed Syracuse this week. Deep down, we know they’d let everyone down and then whine about it afterward.

So now what are we going to do? We’ve come all this way to appease Jim Boeheim and the alleged Syracuse Nation, and now it’s gone, losing yet another ACC tournament game to continue its winless and pointless legacy in a league it joined as an interloper in 2011.

Bubble burst? Syracuse basketball loses to Miami 62-57 (Brent Axe recap) (PS; Axe)

Anyone know the way to Dayton? Because it feels like that is where the Syracuse University basketball team will end up after losing to Miami 62-57 in the ACC Tournament.

Dayton. The First Four. Otherwise known as the 'play-in' game. Otherwise known as 'not quite the NCAA Tournament though they try to sell you that its the NCAA Tournament.'

Otherwise known as 'not the NIT,' which is a fate no one involved wants.

The Orange's resume makes for great fodder in a debate class.

If you argue for Syracuse's inclusion into the 2017 NCAA Tournament field, then 10 is your favorite number. You will point to the Orange's Top 10 wins (Duke, Florida State and Virginia) and their 10 ACC wins.

If you argue against Syracuse's inclusion in the 2017 NCAA Tournament field, then you will point at a map anywhere outside of Onondaga County and say 'you failed here' with the Orange's 2-11 record at road/neutral sites and a lack of quality non-conference wins. The stink from that 33-point loss to St. John's and losses to UConn and Boston College hasn't quite washed off either.

But is this an NIT team? I don't think so. Syracuse found a Wonka bar with a golden ticket all the way to the Final Four on Selection Sunday last year. The Orange proved they could win if would just let them join the party.

We'll all wait for Sunday to see if that invite to the Big Dance comes.

While some opt to avoid the crowds, a group of downtown bars and restaurants will be welcoming crowds with food and drink specials, or by opening their doors earlier than usual.

Bubble watch: Syracuse basketball will have to watch key games in conference tourneys

Wednesday's Games of Note

Duke 79, Clemson 72: ESPN bracket guru Joe Lunardi had Clemson among his Next Four Out of the NCAA tournament field going into Wednesday's second-round of the ACC tournament. Clemson's loss ends any hopes the Tigers had of making a push and getting an at-large bid.

California 67, Oregon State 62: California was also one of Lunardi's Next Four Out, which means the Golden Bears have some work to do. Cal's win over Oregon State doesn't help its NCAA tourney profile, but it allows the Golden Bears to play another day.

Virginia Tech 99, Wake Forest 90: Lunardi had Wake Forest as one of his Last Four In. The Demon Deacons' loss to Virginia Tech could bump them out of the bracket. However, several other bracket experts think more highly of Wake Forest, so the Deacons will watch games over the next few days.

Southern California 78, Washington 73: Southern Cal was one of Lunardi's Last Four In prior to its game against the lowly Huskies. Washington had gone 2-16 in the Pac-12, but led USC at halftime. The Trojans avoided the potentially distastrous loss.

Xavier 75, DePaul 64: A game much similiar to USC-Washington. Xavier faced a toothless DePaul team that had gone 2-16 in the Big East. DePaul pushed for a while, but eventually fell.

Thursday's Games of Note

Illinois vs. Michigan (Noon, BTN): This game has taken on even more intrigue after Michigan's team plane skidded off the runway on Wednesday. The Wolverines were expected to fly into Washington D.C. on Thursday morning and then bus straight to the Verizon Center. So can Illinois, which is one of Lunardi's First 4 Out, take advantage? A win over Michigan could put the Illini into the NCAA field.

Middle Tennessee State vs. Texas-San Antonio (12:30 p.m.): Syracuse fans want MTSU to win the Conference USA tournament and get the league's automatic bid. The Blue Raiders are a 12-seed according to BracketMatrix.com and probably wouldn't get an at-large bid if they don't win the conference tournament. But why take chances? MTSU faces UT-San Antonio in the quarterfinals today.

Michigan State vs. Penn State (2:25 p.m., BTN): Lunardi has Michigan State well into the tournament, but CBSSports' Jerry Palm has the Spartans closer to the bubble. BracketMatrix has Michigan State as a 10-seed. The Spartans can't afford a loss to Penn State.

Seton Hall vs. Marquette (2:30 p.m., FS1): Lunardi has Marquette as one of the last four teams receiving byes in the NCAA tournament. Seton Hall is ahead of Marquette. However, BracketMatrix puts them both on the 10-seed line. The loser should still be fine, but it'll sweat a little more.

California vs. Utah (5:30 p.m.): As stated above, Cal is on the NCAA bubble. This game is a chance for Cal to make up for an embarrassing 30-point loss to Utah just one week ago.

Indiana vs. Iowa (6:30 p.m., ESPN2): Iowa is one of Lunardi's First Four Out. Same with BracketMatrix. Indiana is even further out of the NCAA field; among Lunardi's Next Four Out. A loss to Indiana might squash Iowa's hopes and still not get Indiana in, so Syracuse fans will have to cheer for the Hoosiers.

Vanderbilt vs. Texas A&M (7 p.m., SECN): Vanderbilt is an 11-seed with a bye, according to Lunardi, but a 12-seed on BracketMatrix. A win might not be enough to ensure a bid for Vandy, but the Commodores can't afford a loss to Texas A&M.

Xavier vs. Butler (7 p.m., FS1): Xavier survived its no-win opening round game versus DePaul; now it's time to see if Xavier really deserves an at-large bid. The Musketeers have not beaten any team other than DePaul since losing star guard Edmund Sumner.

Kansas State vs. Baylor (9 p.m., ESPNU): Kansas State is one of the First Four Out in Lunardi's projection. Same with BracketMatrix. A win over Baylor would give K-State a huge boost. Syracuse fans have to pull for Baylor.

Providence vs. Creighton (9:30 p.m., FS1): Providence is on the 10-seed line on BracketMatrix. The Friars are also one of the last byes on Lunardi's chart. A win over Creighton puts the Friars well into the field.

USC vs. UCLA (11:30 p.m., ESPN): Can Southern Cal get a major win over UCLA? If the Trojans can knock off their crosstown rivals, they bounce off the bubble and into the NCAA field. Syracuse fans will be staying up late to cheer for the Bruins.

Syracuse’s bubble situation is beyond complex

Nothing ever seems to be easy with the Orange, does it?

On the heels of Wednesday’s loss to Miami in the ACC Tournament, it appears to be 100 percent certain that the next four days will be filled with nothing except anxiety for Syracuse fans and coaches.

Jim Boeheim’s squad will head to Selection Sunday with a record of 18-14 overall with key wins over Duke, Virginia, Miami, Wake Forest, and Florida State as well as MAAC regular season champion Monmouth, but also suffered defeats against four teams that won’t play in the NCAA Tournament — St. John’s, Boston College, UConn, and Georgetown.

What’s the biggest difference between Syracuse’s resume this year versus last when it made the field of 68 as a 10 seed?

Key wins away from the Carrier Dome.

Last season, the Orange won a game at Duke while also earning neutral site wins over two NCAA Tournament teams — Texas A&M and UConn. This year, the only two teams that Syracuse has beaten away from the Carrier Dome are NC State and Clemson.

The Orange are likely going to have more wins over tournament teams than other squads that they’re competing with on the bubble, but they need to avoid bid stealers emerging from leagues like the Atlantic 10, American, and SEC over the past few days if they want to have a chance hear their name called on Selection Sunday
