Welcome to Freedom of Information Day!

Freedom of Information Day is celebrated annually on the birthday of President James Madison. President Madison, who is known as the Father of the Constitution, was also a lifelong advocate for openness and transparency of government. On March 16 we thank him for being a champion of public access to government information. Many of the resources you use at the Library each day are available because of his advocacy at the founding of our nation.

NIT 2017: City of Greensboro keeps it classy after Syracuse beats UNCG (sportingnews.com; Gatto)

The City of Greensboro experienced its own first-round exit Wednesday night, but it responded like a champion.

Its college basketball team fell to Syracuse in the first round of the NIT, days after Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said there was "no value" in Greensboro hosting the ACC Tournament. The city gave a snarky response to Boeheim on Twitter, referencing the Orange's early exit from this year's event.

The tone was much classier Wednesday after the Orange's 90-77 victory at the Carrier Dome.

Congratulations Syracuse on its first round #NIT win. Proud of the effort by @UNCGBasketball. The is welcome to Greensboro anytime.

Not a blessed "Bless their hearts" to be seen.

MORE: Boeheim says he may retire after season

Boeheim was not asked about Greensboro, the city, during his postgame session with the media.

With that drama finished, the city's thoughts (or at least the thoughts of the person handling its Twitter account) now turn to . . . food?

The Final Word: Beat writers discuss takeaways from Syracuse's 90-77 win over UNC-Greensboro (DO; podcast; Grossman & Schwedelson)

No. 1 seed Syracuse (19-14, 10-8 Atlantic Coast) beat No. 8 seed North Carolina-Greensboro (25-10, 14-4 Southern), 90-77 to open the National Invitation Tournament. White scores 34, leads Syracuse 90-77 over UNCG in NIT (Mar 15, 2017) | FOX Sports (foxsports.com; AP)

Andrew White III made seven of his nine 3-point attempts and scored 34 points in leading Syracuse to a 90-77 victory over UNC Greensboro in a first-round NIT game on Wednesday night, giving coach Jim Boeheim a landmark 903rd win.

Boeheim moved a victory ahead of Bob Knight for second place all-time in Division I basketball. Boeheim’s total does not include 101 wins vacated as a result of NCAA penalties.

White set the Syracuse single-season record with 109 3-pointers, on 269 attempts. The record had been held by current Orange assistant coach Gerry McNamara (2004-05), who made 107 on 315 tries.

Tyus Battle added 20 points for Syracuse (19-14), a No. 1 seed who will host fifth-seeded Mississippi in the second round. Tyler Lydon had 13 points and 10 rebounds for his eighth double-double this season.

Diante Baldwin led the Spartans (25-10), who were three-way co-champs in the Southern Conference, with 19 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. Francis Alonso, the team’s leading scorer at 15.2 ppg, was 1-of-9 shooting for three points.

A Frank Howard 3-pointer broke a tie and began a 12-0 run that gave Syracuse a 35-24 lead and it remained ahead, leading 47-37 at halftime. Battle scored seven points in a 16-4 run for a 22-point second-half lead. The Spartans got within seven on a Baldwin 3-pointer with two minutes left and nine free throws down the stretch kept the Orange in charge.

After getting into the NCAA Tournament last year with a 19-13 record and reaching the Final Four, Syracuse was left out despite beating three top-10 teams.

”For myself it took me a little while to get over it,” Lydon said of not getting into the NCAA Tournament. ”It’s something you work for all year, to make it to a tournament, go on a run, and obviously try and win a national championship, so we put in so much time and effort and hard work into that, and it doesn’t happen to come through, it’s really hard. But, at the same time, it’s not like we’re done – we can still play together, we can still play games, and try to win another championship.”

2017 NIT: Syracuse basketball defeats UNC-Greensboro 90-77 (Brent Axe recap) (PS; Axe)

We had two unwanted guests in town this week.

There was Stella, a stubborn and persistent winter storm, who reminded us of the pains of the Blizzard of '93 that took place this week 24 years ago.

And then there was the NIT, the tournament that had not paid us a visit since 2008 but wanted to drop by again.

The worst of Stella is over, but her remnants will stick around for awhile before spring shows itself.

As for the NIT, like the obnoxious relative or old college buddy that overstays its welcome, I guess they'll be staying here for a few more days too.

'Stella' may have delayed the inevitable for a day, but alas, a game was played Wednesday night at the Carrier Dome and a game, an NIT game (meh), was won by Syracuse by a score of 90-77 over UNC-Greensboro.

4,288 took a break from shoveling to come to this game, believed to be the smallest basketball crowd in Carrier Dome history. Those hardy souls that navigated around the growing snowbanks saw Andrew White set another record, Tyus Battle continue to shine and the Spartans fail to get redemption over Jim Boeheim and his shot at their fair city as an unworthy ACC Tournament host.

The Orange made the most of their bad hand on Wednesday, surely wishing to be playing in Dayton instead of Syracuse as that would mean inclusion in the NCAA Tournament.

Syracuse plays again at 11 a.m. (yes, eastern time) on Saturday against Ole Miss in the NIT.

Perhaps another winter storm would be a more welcome guest.

Drone company wins $1M grand prize in Genius NY business competition in Syracuse (PS; Moriarty)

AutoModality, whose technology allows drones to automatically conduct close-up inspections of bridges, buildings, power lines and other structures, has won the $1 million grand prize in the Genius NY business competition.

A panel of seven judges selected the company after the competition's six finalists made 10-minutes pitches to them at the Marriott Syracuse Downtown Wednesday evening.

Ed Koch, AutoModality's chief technology officer and one of its three principals, said the company will use the money to hire employees.

"We're going to start hiring personnel and setting up operations here in New York," he said.

Koch and his two partners, CEO Dan Hennage and Aviation Director Jimmy Halliday, started AutoModality in the San Francisco area two and a half years ago. Koch and Hennage are engineers. Halliday is an airplane pilot and experienced drone operator.

The company says it has developed technology that allows unmanned vehicles equipped with cameras, sensors and computers to automatically inspect structures in situations that are not possible using manual control or commercially available autopilots. Koch said the company's drones can fly within three feet of the objects, using computerized optics, not GPS, to control their movements and avoid collisions with the objects they are inspecting.

"We're still in R&D, but we're finalizing contracts with customers," said Koch. "We're ready to launch."
