Welcome to National Corned Beef and Cabbage Day!

National Corned Beef and Cabbage Day is observed annually on March 17th. This seems to be fitting for St. Patrick’s Day in the United States.

To corn something is simply to preserve it in a salty brine (the term corn refers to the coarse grains of salt used for curing).

Corned beef is a salt-cured beef product. In the traditional Irish Corned Beef and Cabbage recipes, salt pork or bacon joint was used instead of corned beef. Sometime in the mid-1800s when the Irish immigrated to America, they found that Jewish corned beef was very similar in texture to bacon joint (pork). It was then that corned beef was used as a replacement for the bacon when preparing corned beef and cabbage meals. Soon after, Irish-Americans began having Corned Beef and Cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day.

Corned beef and cabbage remains a popular food in many areas of the United States.

— Howard Jr (@hwashington324) March 16, 2017

Syracuse offered Washington last week after the high school senior had long expressed interest in the Orange. He is the third member of SU’s Class of 2017, joining forwards Oshae Brissett and Bourama Sidibe. Howard hails from Buffalo, and the 6-foot-2 point guard plays for Athlete Institute Basketball Academy in Ontario, Canada, with Brissett.

Washington is a four-star prospect, according to ESPN, but he’s not ranked in the Top 100. Syracuse still doesn’t have any incoming recruits in the ESPN Top 100 for the first time since ESPN compiled such rankings.

It took Jim Boeheim just one game to decide that he's no fan of the experimental rules the NCAA is implementing during the National Invitation Tournament.

The NIT has become a proving ground of sorts for rules that the NCAA is considering.

In the past, the NCAA has experimented with the 30-second shot clock among rule changes before adopting them for play during the regular season.

This year, the NIT is again using a couple experimental rules and one in particular doesn't sit well with Boeheim.

The NIT is not going with 10-minute quarters, but it is re-setting the number of team fouls at the 10-minute mark of each half. And in tandem with that change, teams are shooting bonus free throws after a team's fourth. Instead of shooting a one-and-one, teams are shooting two free throws after getting into the bonus situation.

Syracuse beat UNC Greensboro in the first round of the NIT on Wednesday, but after the game Boeheim gave the free throw rule a bad review.

"I don't think the 4-foul rule's a good rule at all,'' Boeheim said. "Say you get five, but you get the fifth one just after 10 (minutes). Now, they get five more. So you don't get a free throw for 10 fouls.''

In a whirlwind week of cold weather and hot Ole Miss basketball, the Rebels will be traveling northeast for a second time. The die has been cast, for what could be the best match-up of the entire NIT field.

As a result of a 90-77 win over UNC-Greensboro, #1 seeded Syracuse basketball will be hosting #5 Ole Miss basketball, Saturday with tip-off set for 10am CT. The winner of this contest could easily run the gauntlet, and find themselves in the championship game.

Ole Miss Basketball Heats Up

The Rebels (21-13) are coming off a huge travel win, in the NIT 1st round, over a Monmouth team which had come off an incredible season. Also, Monmouth was an incredible 24-3 at home over the last two seasons coming into the game. Ole Miss basketball made a statement by giving Monmouth number four.

It was a huge win in a tough environment which proves this Rebel team is well equipped to handle the road in this bracket. Of course, now we know we have no choice as we travel back to the snow covered northeast. In addition to the huge win over Monmouth, the initial postponement of the opener between Syracuse and UNCG gave Ole Miss and extra day for practice, travel, and mainly rest.

Syracuse.com’s Chris Carlson calls in to chat about the 2017 NIT and the future of Syracuse basketball with Wes Cheng on The Juice on the Cuse Podcast hosted by SNY.tv. The Juice Online Editor in Chief Brad Bierman also calls in after to talk about Jim Boeheim’s future.

Here are the highlights from the show:

Wes Cheng: Chris, Syracuse with a 90-77 win over UNC Greensboro on Wednesday in front of a small crowd at the Carrier Dome. But before we get to that, should Syracuse have been playing in the NIT or the NCAA Tournament?

Chris Carlson: When I did the bracketology, I had them as the first team out, which is where they finished out. When you look at the historical data on what gets teams in, Syracuse didn’t play a good non-conference schedule. They played one game outside the state of New York and they didn’t win any of them. So when you look at the road record, you didn’t leave home during your non-conference schedule and you didn’t win any road games, it’s kind of your fault.

WC: Chris, let’s look ahead to next season for a moment. Right now, Syracuse has commitments from Bourama Sidibe and Oshae Brissett. They also recently offered point guard Howard Washington, and are involved with Chris Duarte, Eric Ayala and potentially Georgetown decommit Tremont Waters. What’s the latest here and do you see SU having a chance with any of these guys?
