Welcome to Spring!

Spring is one of the four conventional temperate seasons, following winter and preceding summer. There are various technical definitions of spring, but local usage of the term varies according to local climate, cultures and customs. When it is spring in the Northern Hemisphere, it will be autumn in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. At the spring equinox, days are approximately 12 hours long with day length increasing as the season progresses.

Washington hires Syracuse assistant Mike Hopkins for men’s basketball job – The Seattle Times | Quick & Fast Sports News (seattletimes.com)

The Huskies have found a men’s basketball coach and hired Mike Hopkins, who had been an assistant the past 22 years at Syracuse.

“I’m extremely excited to welcome Mike and his family to Seattle,” UW athletic director Jen Cohen said in a statement released by the school. “His resume and reputation within the basketball community made him stand out to us, but ultimately it was his vision for Washington, his passion for teaching and developing student-athletes and his close alignment with the core values of our institution and department that made it more than clear that he was the right fit for us.”

Hopkins has agreed to a six-year deal with the Huskies, reports ESPN’s Jeff Goodman.

“The University of Washington is such a unique place, with a world-class University, an exciting basketball history and unbelievable fan support,” Hopkins said. “Together, I believe we can build something very special in Seattle, and I can’t wait to get started.”

Hopkins, who began coaching at Syracuse in 1995, was named the head-coach designate on June 25, 2015 and slated to replace longtime coach Jim Boeheim, who turns 73 in November, for the 2017-18 season.

Jim Boeheim's contract extension proves again that Syracuse needs him on that wall (PS; Axe)

Syracuse, N.Y. --We knew Jim Boeheim's last day on the job as the head men's basketball coach at Syracuse University would come beyond the final game of the 2017-18 season.

He told all of us. Remember?

On Sunday, Syracuse University announced an extension of Boeheim's contract that will take him beyond the 2017-18 season.

That contract extension was announced two years to the day that the Hall of Fame head coach held an epic press conference at the Carrier Dome to address NCAA sanctions placed on his program on March 19, 2015.

That day followed the script that so many Boeheim press conferences in the past had in that ...they had no script. Boeheim read a prepared statement and said all the right things, but it was when he went freestyle that we got the good stuff.

Let's stroll down memory lane and recall a few things Boeheim said that day.

Wine Tasting: The latest from a Finger Lakes winery that makes only one thing -- Riesling M (PS; Forecaster)

Each week, David and Leah Valvo of Wineforecaster sample New York state wines. Here, they try a wine -- a 2015 Ovid Line North -- from Boundary Breaks, which makes only Rieslings. The winery is located on the eastern shore of Seneca Lake. This particular Riesling is a collaboration of four different clones all grown in a single vineyard. Highly rated, it epitomes the bouquet and flavors of the region's most popular grape.

Axe is right in the sense that the University feels that it needs JB on that wall.
