Welcome to National Orange Day!

Friday, March 24, is a special day at Syracuse. It is the University’s 147th birthday, a day to celebrate its founding on March 24, 1870.

“National Orange Day is probably the most amazing day out of the whole year because it’s a time to celebrate not only SU’s birthday but Otto’s too—even if you’re not here on campus,” says Malcolm-Ali Davis ’18, a member of the Student Philanthropy Council. “It’s also a day to say thank you for 147 years of changing lives and creating leaders. I’m so proud to be Orange, especially on National Orange Day.”

Here are some of the ways that members of the University community can join in the celebration of National Orange Day:

  • Wear orange!
  • Join in the group photo that will be taken on the front steps of the Hall of Languages at 11:45 a.m. (rain location is the Schine Atrium).
  • Grab a cupcake and a high-five from Otto the Orange in the Schine Atrium from noon to 2 p.m.
  • Send birthday wishes using #CelebrateSU on social media.
  • Share your National Orange Day photos.
  • Check out the community service projects Syracuse University alumni are doing in cities across the country.
  • Make a birthday gift to the part of Syracuse you love most.

Syracuse podcast: Andrew Kouwe on Hopkins leaving, Boeheim staying, next coach - The Juice Online (the juice; podcast; Cheng)

Former Syracuse basketball player Andrew Kouwe calls in to chat about Jim Boeheim, Mike Hopkins, and the future of Syracuse basketball with Wes Cheng on The Juice on the Cuse Podcast hosted by SNY.tv. The Juice Online Editor in Chief Brad Bierman also calls in after to talk about Boeheim’s future.

Here are the highlights from the show:

Wes Cheng: Mike Hopkins announcing that he’s leaving for the University of Washington, and Syracuse announcing Jim Boeheim getting a contract extension. As a former player, what were the thoughts that went through your mind when you heard the news?

Andrew Kouwe: For me it was mixed emotions. Coach Hopkins, you feel happy for him because of how he gave everything to Syracuse. He wanted to be a head coach. You’re happy for him, but you’re sad from a Syracuse program standpoint because you’re losing a great talent. Coach Hopkins was really important for me, making me a better basketball coach from high school to college.

WC: Let’s shift from Mike Hopkins to Jim Boeheim. When is he going to retire? Is he going to coach until he’s 100?

AK: He has such a love of basketball. You hear stories how he’s watching Atlantic 10 games at 10 p.m. He’s got such a competitive nature. As long as he still enjoys practice every day, going out on the road, as time goes on, if you have that competitive fire in him, which it still seems he have, it doesn’t seem like he has to retire in 2-3 years. If he still has it in his system, why not?

Upstate NY casino fined after it allows underage man to play slots and he wins $1,326 (PS; TNS)

A Schenectady casino has been fined a total of $6,000 for two violations after a security officer allowed an underage player onto the gaming floor on Valentine's Day, where he was removed only after he won big playing slots.

Andrick Singh, 20, of Schenectady entered the floor at Rivers Casino & Resort at 10:32 p.m. on Feb. 14 and he played slot machines for 1 hour and 45 minutes, despite the state's minimum age of 21 to play at a commercial casino.

It's a good bet that he would never have been caught if he hadn't hit hit a jackpot of $1,326 at 12:30 a.m. and couldn't provide identification to claim his money.

A March 7 letter sent by the state Gaming Commission to Mary Cheeks, general manager of Rivers Casino, states the advanced identification detection scanner at the entrance to the casino floor was functioning and the security officer was alerted "that the individual seeking entry was underage, but the alert was disregarded."
