Welcome to Heimlich Maneuver Day!

Heimlich Maneuver Day is being observed today! It has always been observed annually on June 1st.

Dr. Henry Heimlich came up with the Heimlich Maneuver in 1974. Also known as abdominal thrusts, this procedure is used to dislodge food and objects from the throat of a choking person. As the American Red Cross claims over 3,000 deaths are caused by choking each year, celebrating Heimlich Maneuver Day is an important way to raise awareness and help save lives. The origin of the day is unknown.

Inside the Playbook: Syracuse basketball and its game of zones - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)

If you were to play a basketball word association game and the topic was a 2-3 zone defense, your response would invariably be “Syracuse.” Yes, much like the orange jerseys, Carrier Dome tapestry and a distaste for the city of Greensboro (I kid), the patented 2-3 zone of Jim Boeheim has become synonymous with Syracuse basketball.

The results speak for themselves, but let’s take a look at why year after year Syracuse continues to rely on its zone defense.

What’s a 2-3 zone?
It’s the most-common zone defense, and an alternative to the far more prominent man-to-man approach. Two guards dot the top of the zone above each elbow while the team’s three frontcourt players create the backline.

Zone defense is now allowed in the NBA, but in that league defenders aren’t allowed to hang in the lane (not guarding someone) for longer than three seconds. That’s not the case at the college level.

It’s important to note, too, for Syracuse that when the ball gets swung to the wing, it’s the responsibility of the backline forward on that side to close out on the shooter, which gives the guard time to rotate down. Once the guard arrives, the forward retreats back to the baseline. This creates a little more of a 2-2-1 or 2-1-2 look, but functionally it’s the same thing.

Boeheim's Army adds sharpshooter to its The Basketball Tournament roster (PS; Ditota)

Meet the newest member of Boeheim's Army:

James Southerland joined the team on short notice last summer, without being able to practice with the team. He was shrouded in mystery and deemed "The Ringer."

This season, he will be joining the team in time for pre-The Basketball Tournament workouts in Syracuse, which will likely start some time around July 1. Boeheim's Army now has eight players on its roster: Eric Devendorf, Scoop Jardine, Brandon Triche, Donte Greene, Rick Jackson, DaShonte Riley, C.J. Fair and Southerland. Ryan Blackwell will coach the team.

Phase II, which included all of the restoration work needed for the main part of the cathedral, is well under way. The slate roof on the north side is completed. The new radiant heating system has been installed and all new concrete has been poured for the floors.

Work ahead includes the remaining parts of the roof, painting and plaster. The cathedral is scheduled to reopen Sept. 2.
