Welcome to Donut Day!

Each year on the first Friday in June, people participate in National Doughnut or Donut Day. This day celebrates the doughnut and honors the Salvation Army Lassies, the women that served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

In 1917, the original “Salvation Army Doughnut” was first served by the ladies of the Salvation Army. It was during WWI that the Salvation Army Lassies went to the front lines of Europe. Home cooked foods, provided by these brave volunteers, were a morale boost to the troops.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil inside the metal helmets of American soldiers. American infantrymen were then commonly called “doughboys.” A more standard spelling is donut.

Boeheim's Army secures enough fan votes to compete in TBT 2017; what's next? (PS; Ditota)

Count Boeheim's Army among the teams that have secured enough fan votes to play in this summer's The Basketball Tournament.

The team, a conglomeration of former Syracuse basketball players, finished fourth in fan voting in the Northeast region. The top nine teams in each of the four regions (Northeast, South, Midwest, West) automatically gain entry into the winner-take-all $2 million summer basketball tournament, provided those votes were legitimately acquired. Boeheim's Army general manager Kevin Belbey said TBT organizers have told GMs they have a way to determine which votes are fraudulent. The Syracuse-based team has always garnered a large, legitimate share of fan votes.

Six at-large teams from each region will join the field. Those teams are selected by TBT personnel. This year, one more team from each region will earn a spot by paying to play in a pre-tournament Jamboree.

Boeheim's Army, playing in TBT for the third straight summer, consists this year of Eric Devendorf, Scoop Jardine, Brandon Triche, C.J. Fair, James Southerland, Donte Greene, Rick Jackson and DaShonte Riley. Belbey said the team could add another player before it convenes in Syracuse for training camp, likely on July 1. If Boeheim's Army adds a player before its first game (July 8-9 in Philadelphia), it will cost the team $1,000.

"It adds an element of surprise for us and for other teams, too," Belbey said. "All you gotta do it pay the price of admission. I would not be surprised if we added another player."

Belbey said potential candidates are still evaluating their summer options. The Boeheim's Army GM has said he wants his players to fully commit to practices before the first games and anticipates potentially adding a player before training camp starts.

2017 NBA Draft Profile: Syracuse forward Andrew White - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

The NBA Draft is in June, and Syracuse has two players that will potentially get drafted. Today, we take a look at Andrew White, who was one of SU’s most reliable players. He led the team in scoring with 17.9 points per game.

Here is The Juice Online’s scouting report on White:

Strengths: Excellent shooting ability with NBA range… Above-average midrange game… Ability to create his own shot… Good size and strength for an NBA wing… Showed ability to shoulder scoring load with SU… Solid rebounder for a wing.

Weaknesses: Not great athlete… Lacks NBA explosiveness and first step to consistently get to the rim… Lateral quickness will be a defensive issue at next level… At times appeared disinterested on defensive end… Below average passer… Struggled at times to finish in the paint… At 24, he will be one of the oldest players in the draft… Limited upside.

» Related: There is no Syracuse basketball recruiting decline (yet)

NBA Comparison: Poor man’s Dale Ellis. While no one is expecting Andrew White to have a 16 year career in the NBA with a trip to an All-Star game, the two are similar in size (6’7″, 210 pounds) and have smooth strokes from distance. Neither was and is particularly known for his defense, either.

Vitals:

  • Birthdate: June, 1993
  • Hometown: Richmond, Va.
  • Position: Forward
  • School: Syracuse ’17
  • Height, 6’7″
  • Weight, 210 lbs

House of the Week: Historic Dietz building transformed into luxury lofts (PS; Croyle)

When the owners of the former R.E. Dietz building, Matthew Paulus and his father-in-law Larry Losty Jr., decided to join the trend of turning old Syracuse buildings into upscale apartments, they had to, Paulus said, "do it big."

Located in the Park Avenue section, an area Paulus calls "a hidden treasure of Syracuse," the Dietz Lofts will have 92 luxury lofts of various sizes when it opens on August 1.

The building dates to the 19th century, when it was home to The Steam Gauge and Lantern Co., before becoming home to the Dietz Company. An addition was built in 1904 when the company won a contract to supply lanterns for the construction of the Panama Canal.

Losty bought the building after the company closed in 1992.

Paulus said the architecture of the building was "already fantastic," and said "no one can build a building like this anymore."

They went work on a $30 million project that paid homage to the building's heritage, as well as, including many modern conveniences.

They left the building's brick walls, wooden ceiling beams and support posts exposed, and installed tall factory-style windows that provide natural light and views of the city.

Concerning the poor evaluation of AWIII's ability to pass: how would they know? Have they ever seen him do it?
(Just kidding)
