Welcome to Juneteenth!

Although Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation went into effect on January 1, 1863, it was not until after the war was over that slaves became free in Texas, possibly because the Proclamation could not be enforced there, or because news of the Proclamation had not been spread there. The war ended in April of 1865, but word did not reach Texas until the following month, and it was not until June that the Confederate Army in the area surrendered. On June 19th, Union General Gordon Granger read “General Order No. 3” in Galveston, which said all slaves were free. The next year freed slaves began celebrating not only the proclamation, but the freeing of all slaves in general, and gave the day the name Juneteenth. Over time the celebrations spread to other parts of the country. During the Great Migrations after World War I and World War II, when large amounts of African Americans moved north, they brought Juneteenth traditions with them. Although this helped spread the holiday, in some cases it made it harder for people to celebrate, as it was harder to take time off from work during the week at urban factory jobs than farm jobs. Juneteenth celebrations also were given a boost after the 1968 Poor People’s March, when returning attendees brought the tradition back to their communities. By the 1980’s and 1990’s, Juneteenth celebrations were prevalent all around the country, and almost all states now recognize the day in some way. Although, as of 2017, it has not been recognized as a federal holiday.

Recruiting Roundup: Cole Swider to visit Syracuse, Anthony Queeley commits - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

Hope you all had a great Father’s Day as we move to today’s recruiting links…

Syracuse will receive a visit from 2018 wing Cole Swider, he tweeted on Sunday. He will visit Syracuse from June 18 – 20, and also has visits to Duke, Xavier and Villanova planned. The St. Andrew’s (Providence) product is rated 85 by ESPN.

Syracuse received a commitment from Lake Nona (Fla.) wide receiver Anthony Queeley on Sunday, his school tweeted. Queeley committed shortly after attending Syracuse camp, and is rated three stars by Scout. Duke, Minnesota and Rutgers were among the other schools pursuing him.

2018 quarterback Will Levis tweeted on Sunday he received an offer from Syracuse. Rated three-stars by 247 Sports, he also holds offers from Florida State, Iowa, North Carolina and Ole’ Miss, among others.

Madison Square Garden move proves tricky for Big Ten (espn; Goodman)

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo contemplated playing a scrimmage against another Big Ten foe. Purdue's Matt Painter thought about holding a nonconference game to help alleviate fears of rust from what could be a lengthy layoff. There has also been consideration from coaches in the league of bringing in a Division II cupcake just prior to the NCAA tournament.

Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany knows it was a risky decision, moving the conference tournament up a week in order to get it in New York, and specifically, Madison Square Garden. But after recently adding Rutgers and Maryland to the league, Delany wanted to make sure he expanded the league's footprint in the Northeast corridor.

"The Garden is the Garden," Delany told ESPN. "It's the mecca."

In order to get the Big Ten tourney in the famed Madison Square Garden, it meant moving the event to Feb. 28 -- a week earlier than all the other power five conference tourneys. Normally, the Big Ten tournament championship backs up to the NCAA Selection Show. Delany had no choice, if he wanted it at MSG, the event had to move up a week because the Big East already has the building reserved for the week of March 6-10.

"The scary thing is the unknown," Izzo said.

"We're coaches," Painter added. "We don't like to have to change our routines."

ACC Football Rx: Most Recent Championship by P5 (accfootballrx.com; Hokie Mark)

Most Recent Championship by P5

Here is a table of most recent championships in football and men's basketball by P5 conference:

Conf CFB MBB
ACC 2016-17 2017
B1G 2014-15 2002
Pac12 2004-5 1997
SEC 2015-16 2012
XII 2005-6 2008

Here is the same table translated into years since the last title in those same two sports:

Conf CFB MBB
ACC 0 0
B1G 2 15
Pac12 12 20
SEC 1 5
XII 11 9

BOTTOM LINE: The ACC has been recently relevant in both of the major sports (not only winning both this season but also playing for the title multiple times in the last 4 years). The only other power conference also relevant in both of the major sports has been the SEC. The Big Ten has been champs of football (thanks to Ohio State) but not in men's basketball in a long time.

Meanwhile the Pac-12 and Big XII haven't won either sport in about a decade or more.
