Welcome to American Eagle Day!
The use of the American Eagle as the bird to represent the country did have a tumultuous history. There were several seals established for the United States in 1776, but none of them were accepted by Congress. Eventually, the job of designing the seal was given to Charles Thomson, the then serving secretary of Congress, who took all the best elements of the presented designs and improved on them by adding this majestic bird to the seal.

NBA Draft: The case for picking Andrew White (DO; Fortier)
The case for drafting Andrew White goes like this: Dude gets buckets.
Two weeks after a 3-point-laden NBA Finals, in which Cleveland had to pour in a Finals-record 24 triples to beat Golden State in just one game, White hopes that his shooting skill will convince a team to pick him during the NBA Draft on Thursday night at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, New York. The Draft begins at 8 p.m.
Most projections have White, who last season set the single-season record for 3-pointers at Syracuse (112), going in the late-second round. This spring, White trained with Tyler Relph of Dr1ven Training, every day, in Dallas for an hour to an hour-and-a-half.
Relph sees White’s NBA comparison as James Jones. The Ringer thinks Rodney Hood.
The Daily Orange builds a case here for NBA teams to draft White and find out if those comps could be correct.
“He fits any place that needs shooting,” Relph said. “And in the way the NBA’s going, everywhere needs shooting.”
Threat from beyond the arc
An NBA 3-point line is 23 feet, nine inches from the hoop — a three-foot increase from the college game and a transition that a shooter such as Andrew White doesn’t worry about making.
All season long, White launched long-range shots and made 40.3 percent of his 278 attempts from deep. Last season, only 10 NBA players with 50 3-point attempts or more shot better than 40 percent.

Men's Basketball To Open The 2017-18 Season At Syracuse (cornellbigred.com)
The Cornell men's basketball team will renew its longtime rivalry with Central New York foe Syracuse when the two teams meet on Friday, Nov. 10 at the Carrier Dome.
The Big Red and the Orange have met 122 times on the hardwood, more than any other Cornell non-conference opponent other than Colgate (128 meetings). Syracuse leads 91-31 and has won 37 consecutive matchups. Cornell's last win in the series came on Dec. 4, 1968, a 93-81 Big Red triumph in Barton Hall.
The Big Red is 1-23 all-time in the Carrier Dome and 0-22 against the Orange.
Syracuse was 19-15 and reached the second round of the NIT last season.
Orange hoach Jim Boeheim, who ranks second in career wins among Division I coaches, enters his 42nd season as Syracuse head coach. He will have the opportunity to coach against son Jimmy Boeheim, who will be a freshman on the Cornell roster.
The rest of the Big Red men's basketball schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.

Cole Swider Remains a Crucial Recruit | Otto's Grove (.com; Kelly)
One of the fastest risers this spring and into the early summer is Cole Swider, the 6-foot-8 forward from St. Andrew’s in Rhode Island. Yesterday, Swider released his final four schools, and also noted that he’s currently on his official visit to Syracuse. With a decision seemingly coming in the near future, he remains an absolutely critical recruit for Jim Boeheim’s 2018 class.
The sweet-shooting forward’s final four also includes Duke (a recent offer), Xavier, and Villanova. Swider recently took an unofficial visit to Durham, and will be returning later this week for his official visit, before visiting Xavier at the end of June. His Villanova visit is still up in the air.
The Orange have landed some high quality recruits over the past two recruiting cycles, but as you no doubt are very aware, neither cycle has been what you’d call “normal.” Late decisions, graduate transfers, and last minute changes of heart from recruits who were seemingly headed to Syracuse have marked 2016 and 2017. That’s part of what makes Swider such an important recruit.

Georgia Tech basketball, FSU top ACC's list of stingiest defenses at the rim - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)
Basketball teams — in college and in the NBA — are shooting more three-pointers than ever before. It’s a critical component of almost every functional offense: shoot three-pointers, efficiently.
However, the most important shot for an offense to get occurs right at the hoop. A dunk or layup at the basket is always the optimal play; that will never change. If a team could get a quality look at the rim on every possession, they would be the greatest offense all-time.
Also, part of why teams shoot so many threes is that it forces defenses to guard space 20-plus feet away from the basket. Which in turn opens up prime real estate in front of the rim.
What does this mean for defenses?
No easy buckets.
More specifically, though: the best defenses know they have to wall off that rim. Now, that’s easier said than done. It takes more than just an elite shot-blocker as a defensive anchor, although that really helps.
Here’s a look at how each ACC team from the 2016-17 season stacks up on defended field goals at the rim.
Team FG% Block rate Unblocked FG% Defensive rating
Georgia Tech 51.3% 20.8% 64.7% 91.0
FSU 53.6% 16.5% 64.2% 95.4
Virginia 53.7% 18.5% 65.9% 87.9
Miami 57.5% 12.5% 65.7% 94.8
Louisville 58.1% 16.7% 69.7% 91.7
Pitt 59% 11.3% 66.6% 103.7
NC State 59.3% 13.0% 68.2% 107.6
Clemson 59.9% 12.8% 68.7% 100.5
Syracuse 60.0% 16.7% 72.0% 102.3

USA Basketball's U19 team will have a strong ACC presence - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Geisinger)
Tryouts got underway this weekend in Colorado Springs for USA Basketball’s U19 team. If you’re a fan of ACC basketball, there’s good reason to pay attention. Several ACC elements — players, coaches and prospects — are involved.
The actual competition, which runs July 1-9, will take place in Cairo, Egypt. Tryouts will conclude on Tuesday, June 20.
USA Basketball won gold medals at the two previous U19 World Championships — back in 2013 and 2015.
Players
Duke big man Marques Bolden, a former five-star recruit, is one of the headliners amongst the group of 27 players competing for roster spots. The hope in Durham is that Bolden’s participation with Team USA will help launch a powerful sophomore season.
Bolden isn’t the only ACC sophomore in the mix, though: Georgia Tech’s Josh Okogie will also try to land a roster spot.
Okogie starred for an upstart 21-win Georgia Tech team, and emerged as one of the best cutters in the conference.
NC State wing Devon Daniels — a transfer from Utah — joins Bolden and Okogie in the Rockies. Big things are expected of Daniels when he returns to action in 2018-19.
Wake Forest commit Chaundee Brown, a top 35 prospect in the 2017 class, is also a participant.

Le Moyne College opts out of NY tuition assistance program for private schools (PS; Weiner)
Le Moyne College in DeWitt has decided to opt out of a new state program that provides tuition assistance for private college and university students in New York, a college official said Monday.
Le Moyne is among more than 100 nonprofit private schools across New York state that faced a deadline Monday to tell state officials whether they would participate in the Enhanced Tuition Awardprogram.
Utica College, which had been considering whether to participate, decided to join the tuition assistance program Monday afternoon, a college spokeswoman said.
Officials at Syracuse University and Cornell University did not provide information about their decision as the deadline approached.
The program for private schools has received less attention than the state's Excelsior Scholarship initiative, which provides free tuition for New York's public college students at certain income levels.
The Enhanced Tuition Award program provides up to $6,000 per semester in tuition assistance to private college and university students whose schools participate in the program. The schools must provide matching funds for a portion of the costs.
Le Moyne College decided to opt out of the program because of concerns about its requirement that students who earn four-year degrees stay in New York state for four years after they receive their degree. Otherwise, the state tuition award will convert to a loan that students must pay back.
