June 22nd recognizes a batter dipped and deep fried bite of deliciousness that runs rings around other appetizers. It’s National Onion Rings Day!
Also found in Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia and some parts of Asia, onion rings exact origin are unknown.
A recipe called “Fried Onions with Parmesan Cheese” is included in John Mollard’s 1802 cookbook The Art of Cookery Made Easy and Refined. Within the recipe, it suggests cutting onions into 1/2 inch rings, dipping them into a batter made of flour, cream, salt, pepper and Parmesan cheese then deep frying them in boiling lard. It recommends serving them with a sauce made of melted butter and mustard.

Projecting Syracuse’s NBA Draft Prospects – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Aki)
As the NBA Draft rolls around, it’s a bittersweet time for the Syracuse basketball community. There’s pride in seeing former Orange stars fulfill their hoop dreams, but also some sorrow in the fact that they won’t be returning to the Carrier Dome floor. Four former SU players worked out for NBA teams since the Orange’s season ended shy of expectations. Here are the names to look out for in Thursday’s draft.
Tyler Lydon
The sophomore is the highest projected player amongst his Syracuse teammates and the only lock to be taken. Lydon has shifted all over draft boards, ranging from the late teens to the second round. On Draft Day Eve, most experts slot the forward as a late first round, and some even have him as an early second round pick. His biggest plus is that he is a big man who stretches the floor with his jump shot. His ability to hit the three is going to be attractive to NBA teams, however his size puts him in between positions. Lydon likely ends up going late in the first round.
Andrew White
The grad transfer spent only one season at SU, but it might have been the final push he needed to hear his name called on Thursday. White led the Orange in scoring and showcased his offense against the NCAA’s elite. If selected, White figures to be a second round pick and could fill a role nicely as a bench player. However, his age may scare away some teams. If White doesn’t get his chance in the draft, he will latch on with a summer team to try to prove his worth.

Some Syracuse basketball recruiting tidbits to share, as 2018 targets Cole Swider and Jalen Carey recently traveled to Central New York.
The proverbial summer slowdown apparently isn’t applying to the Syracuse hoops squad.
Two highly ranked recruits in the 2018 class, Cole Swider and Jalen Carey, earlier this week visited the Orange campus.
A four-star forward out of the St. Andrew’s School in Barrington, R.I., the 6-7 Swider took to Twitter to announce his four finalists. They are Duke, SU, Villanova and Xavier.
Swider’s official visit to the ‘Cuse lasted from June 18-20. He’s rated 78th overall by 247Sports, 48th from ESPN.com and 69th at At their request, this network is being blocked from this site..
The 247Sports Crystal Ball, for the moment, lists Duke as the clear front-runner for Swider’s services. No surprise there.
The 6-2 Carey, a four-star guard who attends the Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, N.J., had an unofficial visit to Central New York this past Tuesday, Syracuse.com reports.
According to various recruiting Web sites, he holds a slew of offers, from programs such as
Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Miami, Notre Dame and Texas, in addition to the ‘Cuse. The 247Sports Crystal Ball pegs the Jayhawks as the favorite, although SU is getting a little love, too.
As for Carey’s class rankings, they presently stand at 82nd from 247Sports, 55th by ESPN.com and 70th via At their request, this network is being blocked from this site..

Doughty College Notebook: NBA Draft reduces ACC star power (roanoke.com; Doughty)
Even the most knowledgeable ACC basketball fan would have trouble answering this trivia question:
With the NBA Draft slated to take place Thursday night, who is the highest-scoring player who will be returning to the ACC next year?
Why, of course, it’s Boston College guard Jerome Robinson, who, as a sophomore, averaged 18.7 points for an Eagles team that finished 9-23.
Robinson was the No. 4 scorer in the ACC last season and the next-highest scorer among returnees is Notre Dame big man Bonzie Colson, who averaged 17.8 points and also was the ACC’s leading rebounder at 10.1 per game.
Colson is the only returning first-team All-ACC player. Back from the All-ACC second team are Georgia Tech’s Ben Lammers and North Carolina’s Joel Berry, who removed his name from consideration after testing the waters.
The top five returning players in the ACC, ranked by 2016-17 scoring average, are Robinson, Colson, Wake Forest’s Bryant Crawford, Georgia Tech’s Josh Okogie and Berry.

2017 NBA Draft Will Draw Heavily On Young Duke And ACC Players (dukebasketballreport.com; Jacobs)
When the NBA draft is held tonight, we can expect several precedent-breaking developments in the selection process. The first 10 college players chosen may be freshmen, an unseasoned first for any draft. Less globally notable, the ACC is projected to supply nine of the top 30 picks, which would be a conference record, and could have 10 according to several scenarios.
The matter of the ACC’s representation is both impressive and deceptive, as is often the case these days when comparing league accomplishments with those of decades past. An eight-team ACC supplying eight first-round picks, as it did in 1995, is a bit different than a 15-member league supplying the same number. Until now, 1995 was the only time the ACC had as many as eight first-rounders.
As for one-and-done departees, virtually every draft projection counts freshmen Jayson Tatum of Duke, Jonathan Isaac of Florida State, and NC State’s Dennis Smith Jr. among the top 10 choices.
The Blue Devils are expected to have three underclassmen picked in the first round (freshmen Tatum and Harry Giles, and sophomore Luke Kennard). Such youthful Duke representation hasn’t happened since way back in 2015, a bygone era when freshmen Jahlil Okafor, Justice Winslow and Ty Jones were among the top two-dozen selections.

Bill headed to Gov. Cuomo making Thruway free for Syracuse commuters (PS; Lohmann)
A bill that would make the Syracuse section of the New York State Thruway free of toll charges is on its way to Gov. Andrew Cuomo's desk.
The state Assembly passed its version of the bill late last night as the legislative session draws to a close. It was sponsored by Assemblyman William Magnarelli (D-Syracuse).
The bill, which last week passed in the Senate, creates a commuter pass for drivers traveling on exits between 34A and 39 on the New York State Thruway. The price of that pass would be only as much as the administrative costs to issue it. The Thruway Authority could, however, charge a higher fee if it demonstrates "significant" loss of revenue.
A review of publicly available data showed the bill could cost the Thruway Authority as much as $1.2 million per year -- a small fraction of the $658 million it collected in tolls in 2014, the most recent year for which data is available.
