Welcome to Pink Flamingo Day!

Pink Flamingo Day is dedicated to the kitschy lawn ornament that became a pop culture icon during the second half of the twentieth century. The pink flamingo was designed by Don Featherstone in 1957, while he was working at Union Products in Leominster, Massachusetts. In 2006, Union Products stopped producing the flamingos, and the following year Leominster’s mayor, Dead Mazzaralla, proclaimed June 23, Pink Flamingo Day. The copyright for the flamingos was purchased by HMC International in 2007, and in 2010 it was purchased by Cado manufacturing, which continues to produce the flamingos. Sadly, Mr. Featherstone passed away in 2015, one day before Pink Flamingo Day.

Former Syracuse forward Tyler Lydon: 'I'm on cloud 9 right now' (DO; Bloss)

Tyler Lydon was playing wiffle ball at home Thursday afternoon. By the time the clock struck 11 p.m., his name had flashed across the screens of televisions all over the country. He’ll fly across the country to Denver in the coming days and, with a powder blue jersey on, answer questions at a press conference. Soon, he said, his nerves will calm down enough that he’ll be able to eat.

It has been a crazy few hours for Lydon. He was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 24th pick in the first round of the 2017 NBA Draft, but his rights are likely to be traded to the Denver Nuggets. He wasn’t in Brooklyn for the draft itself, instead choosing to host his closest family and friends for a draft watch party at his home in Elizaville, New York, about 50 miles south of Albany, New York. With them surrounding him, a lifelong dream was fulfilled.

“I’m on cloud nine right now,” he said.

Lydon said he really started to lock into the television broadcast once the range of picks he was predicted to be selected in arrived. He admitted that he didn’t expect to go to the Nuggets. Lydon worked out for 11 NBA teams, and Denver wasn’t one of them. He said he and his agent thought about trying to fit them into his schedule, but it didn’t make the most sense considering the Denver’s position in the draft. But the stars aligned after the trade with Utah.

Syracuse basketball's Andrew White not picked in NBA draft; what's next for him? (PS; Waters)

Syracuse's Andrew White was not among the 60 players selected in the two rounds of the 2017 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

Now, the 6-foot-6 guard will wait to hear from NBA teams interested in having him play for them in one of the NBA's summer leagues.

White worked out for 15 different NBA teams prior to the draft, suggesting that there was a lot of interest in the former SU standout.

White's last workout came after a late call from the New Orleans Pelicans. White worked out for New Orleans on Wednesday.

Some of the teams that White worked out for included the Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets, San Antonio Spurs and New Orleans Pelicans.

White played just one year at Syracuse. He spent two years at Kansas before transferring to Nebraska where he sat out one year and then played during the 2015-16 season. He then came to Syracuse as a fifth-year graduate transfer.

Tatum, Smith lead the way on banner night for ACC in NBA Draft :: WRALSportsFan.com (wralsports.com)

A pair of Triangle talents went in the top 10 of the NBA Draft Thursday as the ACC set a conference record with 10 first round draft picks. In all, 14 players from nine different ACC schools were selected.

Duke forward Jayson Tatum was selected No. 3 overall by the Boston Celtics and NC State guard Dennis Smith Jr. was taken No. 9 overall by the Dallas Mavericks.

Not far behind Tatum and Smith was Duke guard Luke Kennard who went No. 12 overall to the Detroit Pistons. The Sacramento Kings traded picks with the Portland Trailblazers and took UNC forward Justin Jackson No. 15 overall.

Later in the first round, Wake Forest forward John Collins and Duke forward Harry Giles went back-to-back at picks 19 and 20. Collins was selected by the Atlanta Hawks and Giles was selected by the Kings via the Portland trade. Collins is the first Demon Deacon selected in the NBA Draft since 2010, when Al-Farouq Aminu went No. 8 overall.

Florida State forward Jonathan Issac became the second ACC player off the board as he went No. 6 overall to the Orlando Magic. Louisville guard Donovan Mitchell went No. 13 to the Denver Nuggets but was promptly traded to the Utah Jazz. Syracuse guard Tyler Lydon was picked No. 24 by the by the Jazz, but will head to Denver as part of the Mitchell trade.

UNC big man Tony Bradley capped the banner first round for the ACC as he was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers and quickly traded to Utah.

The 10 draftees from the ACC in the first round surpasses the previous high of eight in 1995.

Nuggets miss out on trade deal during NBA draft, drop back to draft Syracuse forward Tyler Lydon (denverpost.com; Kosmider)

The Nuggets swung big before the NBA draft Thursday night. But the optimism that came with the addition of two near players was tempered by a draft-day trade that melted down at the last minute.

“We were very far along in one,” trade discussion, said Tim Connelly, the Nuggets’ director of basketball operations. “We thought it was done. At the 11th hour, one of the teams involved had a change of heart. While we had countless conversations, there was one in particular we thought was going to take place. It’s never a deal until you have a handshake and a deal and it never got to that point.”

Connelly did not say who the Nuggets nearly acquired, but the Minnesota Timberwolves traded for Chicago star Jimmy Butler an hour before the draft, and the Nuggets had been reported to be involved in a discussion with the Bulls earlier in the day.

The Nuggets also had been linked to a deal with Suns point guard Eric Bledsoe.

“We had a lot of things going,” general manager Arturas Karnisovas said. “Some of them didn’t pan out. We have to move on.”

The Nuggets dropped back to draft Syracuse forward Tyler Lydon with the 24th overall pick, a move that also brought them Utah Jazz forward Trey Lyles.

“I couldn’t be more happy, more excited about joining the organization and get out there and play and getting ready to work,” said Lydon, a 6-foot-9 sharpshooting forward. “That’s what I’m about. I can’t wait.”

Andrew White III's Pre-NBA Draft Journey - Syracuse New Times (syracusenewtimes.com; Armelino)

Andrew White III made quite an impression on Syracuse basketball fans in his first an only season donning the Orange jersey. During the 2016-17 season, White lead the team in scoring with 18.5 points per game, as well as in minutes played with 37.2 per contest. White also broke the Orange single-season three point field goal record with 109, a record previously held by now-assistant coach Gerry Mcnamara.

And those are just a few of the accolades White earned in his short tenure.

Due in part to his smooth shooting stroke and his ability score the ball off the dribble, White was one of the most efficient scorers in the NCAA last season. His performance during the season earned him a visit with half of the teams in the NBA to work out for them during the pre-draft process in the spring and early summer.

In the spring, White worked out with Pure Sweat Basketball CEO Drew Hanlen and his team to prepare for the NBA. Pure Sweat is a player development program that has worked with NBA players such as Dwight Howard, Bradley Beal, Andrew Wiggins and former Syracuse guard Tyler Ennis, among many others.

Summer warmth - and thunderstorms - make a brief return to Upstate New York (PS; Coin)

Summer makes a brief appearance in Upstate New York Friday, as temperatures soaring into the mid-80s could produce a few thunderstorms.

Don't get used to it, though: The weekend will feel more like late September than the first weekend of summer.
A warm front will sweep through Upstate on Friday, bringing a batch of rain showers in the morning and possibly some thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening. Some of that rain will come from the remnants of Tropical Storm Cindy, which dumped 10 inches or more of rain in the Gulf Coast this week.

"The front tomorrow has some of the moisture from Cindy pulled northward," said Joanne LaBounty, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. The front will move through quickly enough, though, that the rainfall shouldn't cause any widespread flooding, she said.

The afternoon storms could cause some isolated flash flooding, though, the weather service said. Flash flooding generally happens on steep terrain or in cities, when heavy rain falls in bursts.

For anyone who is not sure: Burgan, Bouie, Devendorf, Wallace, Owens, Coleman, Moten, Autry.

Billy looks really good. I remember a few games in Philly that he attended where he looked a bit heavier than he does now. They all look to be in decent shape even if a few pounds over their playing weight.

And I think that is Deshaun Williams sitting down behind them on the right. Looks like he is texting Shumpert's girlfriend.
