Welcome to National Sunglasses Day!
Elton John has over a thousand pairs, Canadian singer Corey Hart only wears his at night, and you can tell the good guys from the bad guys in The Matrix by the shape of theirs. What am I talking about? Sunglasses, of course! There’s nothing quite as stylish as a pair of shades, so get out your aviators or your wayfarers and start celebrating Sunglasses Day!
Although the origins of Sunglasses Day are unknown, the history of sunglasses stretches as far back as 14th century China, where judges used eyewear made of smoke-coloured quartz to mask their emotions. Fast-forward 600 years and modern sunglasses as we know them today were first marketed by entrepreneur Sam Foster on the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
One other thing to remember is that sunglasses also help protect your eyes from harmful UV light, so channel your inner-cool and slip on those shades on Sunglasses Day!

ACC, ESPN still bullish on conference network (sportsbusinessdaily.com; Ourand and Smith)
The ACC Network is off and running with its first distribution deals.
The ESPN-owned conference channel recently secured its first carriage agreements with digital video providers, guaranteeing that the channel will be available to consumers when it launches in August 2019. The deals mark an important first step that comes as critics question the network’s viability in such a volatile media marketplace. ESPN would not identify the providers who agreed to a deal, saying it is with providers whose carriage deals run beyond 2019.
So far, PlayStation Vue, DirecTV Now, Sling TV, YouTube TV and Hulu have deals to carry ESPN programming. It’s not known which ones also will take the ACC Network, though it should be noted that ESPN’s parent, Disney, owns 30 percent of Hulu.
The ACC Network was part of a larger package of Disney-owned channels sold to some of these digital video providers. It’s not known how much ESPN is charging for the ACC Network, but it’s expected to be lower than the rates for the SEC Network (72 cents per subscriber per month, according to Kagan) or BTN (43 cents, according to Kagan). These early distribution deals are important for ESPN because they will exert pressure on larger distributors to cut similar deals or risk losing subscribers who want to watch ACC sports.
Whether bigger distributors push back on the ACC Network in an environment where pay-TV channels have been losing subscribers remains to be seen, but one of the first tests will come this fall when ESPN renegotiates its affiliate deal with cable operator Altice USA, formerly Cablevision. Altice USA primarily serves areas around New York City, and it is the one major distributor that doesn’t carry the SEC Network, another ESPN-owned conference channel that launched in 2014.

Orange Watch: Syracuse basketball non-conference schedule close to finished - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)
Item: With this week’s announcement that Syracuse will host Maryland Monday, November 27th as part of the previously released 2017 ACC-Big Ten Challenge matchups, it will set up a “mini-NCAA style” week for the Orange just about midway through the non-league portion of the schedule with a game against Kansas following five days later on a neutral court at Miami (an AmericanAirlines Arena doubleheader with Miami versus Princeton also on the bill). Presently, 11 of the 13 non-ACC ‘Cuse games have officially been announced, with Iona reportedly the 12th game, leaving a seemingly open window on Sat. Dec. 9, plus two exhibition games left to nail down.
As is the case with the future Syracuse football schedules, an ideal mix of one Power Five conference opponent or Notre Dame, along with a couple of games against teams from the Group of Five non-College Football Playoff automatic qualifying conferences, and a game against a FCS level team, the basketball team’s annual non-ACC portion of the schedule has evolved into a similar mix over the seven weeks from the start of the season until the first league games right around New Year’s Day.
With the 12 (we’ll include Iona) opponents known so far, SU opens Nov. 10 with an Ivy League team in Cornell coming off an 8-21 season, followed four days later by Iona (Metro Atlantic), a 22-13 record and NCAA team last year.
The next three games come as the benefit of playing in the Miami Hoophill Invitational; three consecutive home games to boost the season total to the maximum 31 regular season games, a 13/18, non-league/ACC split.
Texas Southern (SWAC) a 23-12 and NCAA team last season, followed by Oakland (Horizon) 25-9 to the NIT last year, and Toledo (MAC) 17-17 last year and to the CBI, make up the Hoophill trio of games which are followed by the Maryland (ACC) and Kansas (Big 12) games over that five day span.
Syracuse football recruiting: WR commit Taj Harris plans to play basketball at SU (PS; Bailey)
Taj Harris sat in Dino Babers' office Saturday evening after a full day of touring campus and breaking down film with the Syracuse football coaches.
Harris, a wide receiver from Palmyra (N.J.) High School, watched in awe as Babers showed him his old record player and put on "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang -- a 1979 single generally credited as the first full-length rap song.
At the end of the meeting, Harris locked in his commitment.
"Syracuse is Wide Receiver U," Harris said in a phone interview on Monday. "They just throw the ball a lot and that's something I would like to get into."
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Harris is rated three stars and the No. 140 wide receiver this cycle by 247Sports.com's composite rankings. He played multiple positions for Palmyra last season, including quarterback, and finished the year with 1,431 total yards (441 passing/600 rushing/390 receiving) and 16 total touchdowns (7/6/3), per NJ.com. He said he chose the Orange over other finalists Rutgers, North Carolina State, Maryland and Wake Forest.
But Harris, who joins Anthony Queeley and Cooper Lutz as receivers pledged to SU's 2018 class has a unique twist in his recruitment -- he also plans to play basketball.

Wells College is In
See which private colleges opted in to NY's new tuition aid program (PS; Weiner)
Less than one-third of New York's private colleges and universities eligible for a new state tuition assistance program have decided to make the aid available to their students.
The state made public a list Monday that shows 29 out of 95 eligible private schools opted in to the Enhanced Tuition Award program, part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo's initiative to make college more affordable.
Cornell University, Utica College and Wells College are the only three private schools in Central New York that agreed to participate in the program.
Syracuse University, Le Moyne College, Colgate University, Cazenovia College and Ithaca College were among the 66 schools that opted out of the new tuition aid program.
The ETA program is the private school counterpart to Cuomo's Excelsior Scholarship program that offers free tuition to students attending the state's public colleges and universities.
Under terms of the ETA program, the state will award up to $6,000 per academic year for eligible undergraduates in private, not-for-profit colleges or universities in New York. Only students who live in the state are eligible to apply.
