Welcome to Garlic Lovers Day!

Garlic Lovers Day is dedicated to lovers of garlic. Garlic is an onionlike plant that is highly aromatic and has a distinct flavor. It is native to Central Asia and Northeastern Iran, and has long been used as a seasoning and for medicine in Asia, Africa, and in Europe around the Mediterranean Sea. It was used in ancient China, Rome, and Greece, and in the Americas wild garlic was eaten before Europeans arrived. In the United States it was only popular near the Gulf of Mexico and in ethnic neighborhoods in large cities, until the mid-20th century, when its popularity spread.

Syracuse Basketball: Jalen Carey’s Commitment Bolsters 2018 Class (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball squad got a huge recruiting boost on Wednesday night, as 2018 four-star guard Jalen Carey pledged his commitment.
For once, my instincts proved correct.

On Wednesday, I penned a column, in which I predicted that 2018 targets Jalen Carey and Nate Roberts would ultimately decide to spend their collegiate careers in Central New York.

Now, Carey reportedly planned to announce on Oct. 11, which is his birthday. That didn’t happen. Rather, the four-star guard took to Twitter on Wednesday evening, in which he let the world know that, beginning with the 2018-19 campaign, he will play basketball at Syracuse.

All I can say is … heck yeah!

Roberts, meanwhile, still expects to reveal his choice on Oct. 17. The power forward, rated three or four stars depending on the recruiting service, is down to the ‘Cuse, Nebraska and Washington, led by former Orange assistant Mike Hopkins.

I got it spot-on with Carey; I hope the same occurs with Roberts.

The 6-3 Carey, a native of Harlem, N.Y., is from the Immaculate Conception High School in Montclair, N.J. He held a slew of scholarship offers, but eventually narrowed down his list to Connecticut and SU.

Syracuse Basketball: Jalen Carey commits to the Orange (bustingbrackets.com; Freeman)

The lack of quality recruits coming to Syracuse basketball has caused the program to falter a bit. The pickup of Jalen Carey was a welcomed new addition.
After missing the NCAA tournament last season, the team also lost several key pieces to graduation and the NBA. With that, this season could be a rough one. The program has been missing on recent recruiting ventures and Coach Boeheim has been forced to take the transfer route for some of his players.

Now, while players like Andrew White, John Gillion and now Geno Thorpe are fine, the system that the Orange runs works best with players coming in as freshmen and learning from the beginning. Player development is key with Syracuse and they have been unable to focus on that recently.

This development process will be put back in play with the class of 2018 recruit Jalen Carey, a 6’3″, 170-pound point guard who will make an immediate impact for the team next year. Carey chose Syracuse over Connecticut while also receiving offers from Villanova, Miami, and Kansas.

Ranked No. 54 by 247Sports, Carey is a traditional point guard that can play as a combo guard as well due to his outstanding shooting ability. He can make plays for both himself and others, something the program has been lacking since Michael Gbinije a few years ago.

He’s the third player to commit for the Orange, joining four-star shooting guard and son of the head coach Buddy Boeheim as well as five-star forward and heralded recruit Darius Bazley.

ACC preview: Can anyone catch Duke and its impressive freshman class? (thecomback.com; Cassillo)

It’s been a busy few years for the Atlantic Coast Conference on the basketball court. The ACC is home to two of the last three national champions, and has had at least one national semifinalist in three straight seasons.

A record six ACC teams made the 2016 Sweet 16, and the league has earned over $100 million for its recent NCAA Tournament success. This past March, Brooklyn played home to the conference’s postseason tournament for the first time, vaulting the ACC to center stage in New York City.

But off the court, the league has also garnered the wrong type of attention, too. Syracuse and Louisville have issued self-imposed postseason bans in the last two years following NCAA issues. North Carolina’s been served several notices of allegations for its own academic scandal that’s still yet to be resolved. And in late September, it was revealed that Louisville and Miami are under FBI investigation for their respective roles in a pay-for-play scandal. It’s already resulted in Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich and men’s basketball coach Rick Pitino both getting fired. There could still be more fallout to come.

That’s the backdrop for the history-fueled league in 2017-18. Once again, the ACC brings at least a couple title contenders to the table. Now we wait to see if those programs can live up amidst a rising tide of scrutiny for some of the conference’s top names.

Projected order of finish
  1. Duke
  2. North Carolina
  3. Miami
  4. Notre Dame
  5. Louisville
  6. Virginia Tech
  7. Virginia
  8. Georgia Tech
  9. Syracuse
  10. NC State
  11. Wake Forest
  12. Florida State
  13. Clemson
  14. Boston College
  15. Pittsburgh

On the hunt for CNY's best pizza 2017: Paladino's Pizza (PS; Pucci)

What started with over 1,000 nominations for more than 150 pizzerias has been narrowed down to six finalists for the title of best pizza in Central New York.

Judging our contest is Best of CNY reporter Jacob Pucci, food/beer writer and restaurant critic Jared Paventi and public affairs reporter Julie McMahon.

Now we're on the road sampling what you said was the best CNY has to offer. Here's a look at our tasty trip so far:

Our third stop: Paladino's Pizza
Business have come and gone from the Northern Lights plaza in Mattydale, but Paladino's Pizza, flanked on either side by a beauty supply store and a now-defunct optometrist, has stood the test of time.

The Paladino family opened the shop in 1980 after moving from the Bronx to Central New York a few years prior. Note: Paladino's doesn't deliver, so you have to hop in your car and drive to the shop yourself. Don't worry, it's worth it.

Pictured here is a half-meatball, half-cheese pizza because while we wanted to try some of the variety Paladino's had to offer, we think a plain cheese slice is the perfect benchmark of which to judge a pizzeria.

The biggest difference we noticed between Paladino's and Mario & Salvo's, our first finalist visit, was the crust. The crust at Paladino's had a bit more chew and the edges were slightly puffier than the New York-style pizza we ate at Mario & Salvo's.

Neither were as chewy or puffy as the Neapolitan pizza we ate from Fabio's Antica Cucina, but that's to be expected with the style of pie.

What's zone offense?
Probably means how to properly run your offense when you face a 2-3 zone. You know. Find a seam in the zone. Pass it there. Then when our center comes up, you pass it to the guy on the baseline who scores easily. Just show any set from last year when TT was playing the middle.

OK. I get it.
