2017-18 Syracuse basketball: Best and worst case scenarios - The Juice Online (the juice; Cheng)

As Syracuse gets closer to opening its 2017-18 season, we take a look at the best and worst case scenarios for each player.

Frank Howard

Best Case: Howard develops a reliable outside jumper and becomes a consistent distributor, while wreaking havoc with his length at the top of the zone.

Worst Case: Howard’s junior season mirrors his sophomore year, and he loses his starting point guard job to Geno Thorpe.

Geno Thorpe

Best Case: Thorpe steps into Andrew White’s shoes as a top ACC scorer and pushes himself into NBA draft consideration.

Worst Case: The guards around Thorpe don’t develop as quickly as hoped, and Thorpe is asked to take on too much of the burden like he did in his time at USF.

Tyus Battle

Best Case: Battle becomes Syracuse’s best scorer in the last five years and keeps Syracuse’s streak of first round NBA selections alive.

Worst Case: He struggles with his outside shot and isn’t quite ready to handle the alpha dog scoring role on the team.

Howard Washington

Best Case: The heady point guard shows flashes of Tyler Ennis, always making the right pass and taking the smart shot as a backup point guard.

Does Notre Dame have its next great tandem? - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Powell)

Throughout Notre Dame’s recent run of ACC success and deep runs in the NCAA Tournament, the Fighting Irish have relied on a versatile rotation.

During both of Notre Dame’s recent Elite Eight seasons of 2014-15 and 2015-16, the Fighting Irish had five different players averaging double figures in scoring. Both teams were led at the point guard position by future NBA point guards – Jerian Grant and Demetrius Jackson – and built around potent supporting casts.

Grant had Jackson, Steve Vasturia and Pat Connaughton to work the ball around to along the perimeter, as well as Zach Auguste in the paint. After Grant left, Jackson stuck around South Bend in 2015-16 as V.J. Beachem and Bonzie Colson emerged as two of the ACC’s top players. Last season, the Irish had four players average at least 13 points per game (Colson, Beachem, Matt Farrell, and Steve Vasturia).

The Great Harvey Hype
Colson and D.J. Harvey gives Notre Dame an intriguing outside-inside combination heading into the 2017-18 season. Harvey was hand-picked by Mike Brey as his No. 1 recruit in the 2017 signing class. He was the first player Notre Dame offered, and for a while was the only player that had a firm offer from the Irish. The 6-6 shooting guard has a chance to be a strong contender for ACC Rookie of the Year honors as he looks to replace the production lost by Beachem and Steve Vasturia’s departures.

Even after Colson, one of the ACC’s top scoring threats, graduates out following the 2017-18 season, the Irish should be fine. Brey and his staff have put together a four-man class (Nate Laszewski, Robby Carmody, Dane Goodwin, and Prentiss Hubb) of consensus top 100 prospects. Laszewski’s early fall pledge to the Irish propelled the class into the top five nationally in the 247Sports Composite team rankings.

The Lucas Brothers and T.J. Miller delivered laughs during Homecoming Weekend (DO; Feinblatt)

The Lucas Brothers kicked off the comedy show by telling the audience that nothing they would go on to say before T.J. Miller took the stage mattered.

The stand-up duo began University Union and Traditions Commission’s comedy night in a packed Goldstein Auditorium on Saturday.

While the opening remarks by the Lucas Brothers were backed up by a book on Western philosophy with a backdrop of a picture of “The People’s Champion” — pro-wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson — the evening, in some part, did matter.

To begin, senior Kristen Unangst announced the homecoming king and queen to the crowd. Brandyn Munford and LaNia Roberts took home the honor to a grand applause. The two royalty members sported a cape and crown as they were led off the stage before the comedy show started.

I think the Lucas Brothers had a fantastic set. Timing is not easy for any comedian, the two work together like they’re not twins but just one person. Personally, I kind of believe there’s only one and he’s just moving back and forth really quickly.

The Lucas Brothers, coming off their April Netflix special, “Lucas Brothers: On Drugs,” covered topics the college crowd cares about, and it was not just drugs. One of their first bits had to do with the alt-right marches that took place this year. They noted how white supremacists are marching too confidently, like they haven’t lost the two wars they’ve started, but still they’re marching like the 1990s Chicago Bulls.

They played off other topics in the national discussion, like North Korea, President Donald Trump and Puerto Rico, and even covered their support of Bernie Sanders — who they believe should tour the country as Bernie Mac Sanders.

Their set was solid, thought-out and not just a recitation of lines. They played off the audience, even getting an audience member to sing a Drake song so they could remember a lyric.
