Welcome to Horseless Carriage Day!

Europeans invented the horseless carriages, but Americans embraced it. As early as 1896, J. Frank and Charles Duryea established the Duryea Motor Company in Peoria, Illinois, and sold the first dozen American-made cars. By 1900 American carmakers had sold about 8,000 vehicles, and by 1910, registrations had soared nearly to half million and were rising rapidly. Leading the adoption of automobiles were doctors and other professionals, but others quickly followed, putting cars into service for the purpose of business, politics, commuting, and recreation. By 1910 automobiles were already becoming necessities.

Not everyone embraced the new machines, however, and enthusiasts had to argue the automobile's superiority over the old "haymotors." Advocates claimed the cars were faster than horses, didn't tire, consumed less fuel, never ran away and were also cleaner. Some even reasoned that cars would eliminate traffic congestion, because an automobile only took up half the space of a horse and buggy!

Why did Syracuse basketball player Frank Howard's rehab last 4 months instead of 6 weeks? (PS; Waters)

Syracuse basketball player Frank Howard originally thought he would need just six weeks to recover from surgery to repair torn muscles in his core area.

Instead, Howard's rehab took four months.

"Originally, I thought it would be a six-week recovery,'' Howard said. "But looking back on it, it wasn't realistic.''

Howard had planned on joining USA East Coast, a team comprised of current college players, on a four-game tour of Europe in July. He never made it.

"I tried to make that a goal and I kind of rushed it,'' he said. "I had a slight setback, a strain, and that told me I had to slow it down.''

Jay Bilas doesn't like the NCAA; if you follow him on Twitter you know why (d&c; DiVeronica)

Jay Bilas is best known for being a college basketball analyst for ESPN, but he's also an attorney and maybe the most outspoken critic of the NCAA on the planet. He hammers away at some of its insane rules and in particular the double standard of it raking in millions off college sports while not paying a dime to the athletes, who happen to be the featured attraction.

And even when he's not in front of a camera, Bilas' platform is massive because the former Duke University star has more than 1.9 million followers on Twitter. On Wednesday night, Bilas delivered some of his message to a sold-out crowd that packed the gymnasium at Honeoye Falls-Lima High School, just south of Rochester.

NBA is “subordinate”? Which way is Fantasyland? “Students want to be students” if ENROLLED. When did Emmert realize the model is flawed? pic.twitter.com/djiccsmEAA

Coach K: Shoe companies great for our sport (espn; Goodman)

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski and Syracuse's Jim Boeheim told ESPN that an answer to cleaning up college basketball isn't to get rid of summer basketball.

The Hall of Famers were asked their thoughts on the state of the game Wednesday in light of the news that the ACC will launch a task force to investigate potential changes to the sport's amateurism model in the wake of an FBI probe into alleged payments between shoe companies and recruits at Louisville and other schools.

ACC commissioner John Swofford said the task force, which will be composed of athletics directors Martin Jarmond of Boston College, Stan Wilcox of Florida State, Kevin White of Duke and Craig Littlepage of Virginia, will look to come up with ideas to pitch to the NCAA to rethink the current rules, including the one-and-done requirement that all players must play at least one year of college ball before being eligible for the NBA draft.

Notable Quotes from ACC Media Day – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Grossman)

With the new season on the horizon, Jim Boeheim, Tyus Battle and Frank Howard traveled to Charlotte, North Carolina to partake in ACC Media Day. Battle and Howard fielded questions in the morning and Boeheim in the afternoon. Boeheim also made a telling appearance on SportsCenter this morning. There, obviously, was a lot of topics covered so I took the liberty of pulling the best quote from each of Syracuse’s representatives in Charlotte.

“We understand what the narrative is of our team. And we play with that chip on our shoulder every day and we could be the number one team in the country and we would still have that chip on our shoulder. We just want to come out, work hard and prove it to ourselves”.

Onondaga Lake trail to be extended over land once promised to Onondaga Nation (PS; Coin)

A year ago, Onondaga County reneged on its promise to give a tract of heavily polluted land along Onondaga Lake to the Onondaga Nation.

Now, the county plans to extend the lake's biking and walking trail through that land, known as Murphy's Island, next to Destiny USA.

Critics say the county is just trying to avoid an expensive cleanup on a piece of land contaminated with a variety of metals and chemicals.

"The idea is to try to get the least cleanup possible," said Lloyd Withers, a local businessman who lobbied county legislators in 2011 to give Murphy's Island to the Onondaga Nation.

The county agrees that a trail would involve limited cleanup costs, but said it wants to move forward to ultimately complete the Loop the Lake trail all the way around the lake.

"This is a great opportunity to keep the momentum going forward," Travis Glazier, the county's environment director, recently told the county Legislature's Environmental Protection Committee.
