Welcome to Carl Sagan Day!

Carl Sagan Day celebrates the life, teachings, and legacy of Carl Sagan, who was born on this day in 1934, and who is known for his many contributions to science. The day was created in 2009 by the Center For Inquiry in Fort Lauderdale, as well Florida Atheists and Secular Humanists (FLASH), and other groups. Events have been held in Florida, but also have spread around the world. Some examples of events that have taken place are star parties—where people come together and view the sky, astronomy lectures, science fairs, and workshops.

With Culture Forming, Men’s Basketball to Kick Off Earl’s 2nd Year Against Powerhouse Syracuse (cornellsun.com; Zhu)

If last season represented a season of change for the Cornell men’s basketball team, then the upcoming 2017-18 campaign can be considered one of stabilization.

Last year’s changing of the guard at head coach and the inauguration of a conference tournament, which seemed well within reach at times for the Red, had more than a few believing the team could finally pull itself out of the bottom of the league standings.

Yet despite all the excitement, expectations never turned into reality. The team trudged to an 8-21 overall record, with its 4-10 conference record good for seventh place in the Ivy League.

This season represents a complete reversal from the storyline of last season. Head coach Brian Earl now has a full year of coaching under his belt and has welcomed in the first recruiting class of his tenure. Players lost over the offseason have taken remnants of the old system with them, while incoming rookies start afresh with the new system.

College basketball: Syracuse, position-by-position (watertowndailytimes.com; AP)

Syracuse, Position-by-position

Point guard

The initial time table for Frank Howard’s recovery was six weeks. But the injury suffered in January, which involved muscles that went from his groin to his lower abdomen, sidelined Howard all summer. Howard clearly wants the chance to start over again with Syracuse fans, even changing his number from 1 to 23. A more important number for Howard to change? Howard shot just 32 percent shooting from behind the arc ... Geno Thorpe, 23, joins Syracuse as a graduate transfer from South Florida. The 6-3 guard led South Florida in scoring, assists, steals, minutes and free throw percentage. Jim Boeheim said Thorpe does not yet “have his push off” after being slowed down by an ankle injury ... Also new at point guard is freshman Howard Washington. The Buffalo native and lifelong Syracuse fan originally committed to Butler, as Syracuse waited until March before offering him a scholarship. Assistant coach Gerry McNamara has compared Washington to former Syracuse guard Tyler Ennis.

Syracuse Basketball Player Preview: Matthew Moyer – Orange Fizz – Free Syracuse Recruiting News (orangefizz.net; Hoppe)

In a season with plenty of unknowns for Syracuse, redshirt freshman Matthew Moyer is perhaps the biggest question mark. Moyer hasn’t played in a game that counts for SU, but was called the Orange’s most experienced forward at media day by Jim Boeheim. While that doesn’t seem to add up, it makes more sense when you consider that Moyer practiced with the team throughout last season. The Gahanna, Ohio native was also with the team last year to experience all the highs and lows that came with the 2016-17 season.

With such a young team this year, Moyer has been thrusted into a starting role. He’ll get the start in the frontcourt along with freshman Oshae Brissett and junior Paschal Chukwu. At six feet eight inches tall, Moyer has the capability to guard both wing and post players.

Syracuse Basketball Underwhelms Despite 25-Point Triumph Over SCS (itlh.com; Adler)

The Syracuse basketball program wrapped up its exhibition schedule with a relatively lackluster win against Southern Connecticut State. ITLH explains why.
SU is my alma mater, and I bleed Orange through and through.

While I am totally biased when it comes to ‘Cuse hoops, I also try to remain somewhat objective when writing about the squad for Inside The Loud House.

The 2017-18 regular season is nearly upon us. And I don’t want to get too carried away, because a lot can transpire in a couple of weeks or months. Particularly for an extremely inexperienced and young roster.

However, if I am assessing the situation honestly at this juncture, Syracuse has a ton of work to do if it seeks to perform competitively this stanza.

Head coach Jim Boeheim, who isn’t afraid to constructively criticize his guys when appropriate, said as much in his post-game press conference after SU dispatched of Southern Connecticut State, 84-59, on Monday evening at the Carrier Dome.

Last year: 19-15, 10-8 ACC. Made NIT.

After falling just short of the NCAA Tournament last year, Syracuse had a rough offseason punctuated by the transfer of promising freshman Taurean Thompson to Seton Hall. Foothill Hops: They pioneered Upstate NY's modern hop industry. Now they have a brewery (PS; Cazentre)

For 16 years, Kate and Larry Fisher have been supplying hops to brewers in Central New York and beyond from their farm in Madison County.

They've also been active in the resurgence of New York's once-dominant hops-growing industry and have worked to promote hops farms across the Northeast..

Now, they've opened their own brewery. Of course, the beer will make use of their own hops. The slogan:"Our hops in every drop!"

Foothill Hops Farm Brewery is at 5024 Bear Path Road (Route 46) just south of Munnsville in Madison County. The farm at Foothills Hops opened in 2001 and the Fishers soon added a retail shop for homebrewers.

Oshae Brissett reluctantly left home to have a shot at making it big (DO; Fortier)

The more his parents pushed, the harder Oshae Brissett dug in against them. He didn’t want to leave home to play basketball at a boarding school. It was summer 2013, just before he entered high school, and Brissett wanted to stay in Mississauga, Ontario. He told his parents he wanted to wait a year.

“I was scared,” he said recently. “I didn’t want to go at all.”

Brissett’s mother, McKeitha McFarlane, and father, Bernard Brissett, had separated close to the time Brissett was born, but they united on this front: Their son had to go. They soothed his fears while building their case. That the United States had better competition. That it would give him a better chance at getting noticed by colleges. That his brother, Dejon Brissett, had gone to a boarding school in the Chicago suburbs that eventually earned him a football scholarship to Richmond.

Marek Dolezaj battles adjustment from European leagues to NCAA in freshman season for Syracuse (DO; DiSturco)

Editor’s note: In late October, freshman forward Oshae Brissett told The Daily Orange: “Our freshmen, people don’t know how good we are.” Granted, no one knows just how good the four freshmen are yet, but in a four-part series this week, The D.O. tells you who they are.

One day this summer at the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center, associate head coach Adrian Autry noticed his freshman forward was in the perfect spot during an offensive set. Then, days later, he saw Marek Dolezaj make the right pass. Then the Slovakian forward found the right spot again. And again. Months later, remembering these summer sessions, Autry laughed at how Dolezaj always seemed to appear in the right spot.

“(European players) are very disciplined in certain things,” Autry said. “You can see that stick out as opposed to a typical freshman from high school that’s athletic and can run.”

That’s just one of the reasons why SU head coach Jim Boeheim decided Dolezaj would be his first European recruit in the last 10 years. That the length of the 6-foot-9 forward fits into the 2-3 defensive scheme Syracuse runs doesn’t hurt either.
