Welcome to National Pickle Day!

National Pickle Day traces its roots to International Pickle Week, which was started by the National Pickle Packers Association in 1949. Pickles, which usually mean pickled cucumbers when spoke of in the United States, are preserved in a brine or vinegar solution, and flavored with herbs and seasonings. The word "pickle" is derived from the Dutch word pekel, which means brine. The pickling process was invented around 1440, and many people were making pickles in their homes by the 1600's. This was helped with the invention of the mason jar in 1858. Pickles are a low calorie food and high in vitamin K, but they may also be high in sodium. Each year Americans eat about 9 pounds of pickles.

Syracuse basketball vs. Iona: 10 things to watch for (PS; Waters)

The Syracuse Orange will host the Iona College Gaels on Tuesday night at the Carrier Dome in the second game of the season for both teams.

Syracuse won its opener on Friday with a 77-45 win over Cornell. Iona suffered a surprising 69-67 loss at Albany on Friday.

Iona lost its top three scorers off a team that went 22-13 last season. Gone are Sam Cassell, Jr., Jon Severe and Jordan Washington. The Gaels still have four players who started at least eight games a year ago.

Iona has won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title in each of the last two years and could make it three in a row this year.

Tuesday's game is set for a 7 p.m. start. It can be seen on ACC Network Extra.

Syracuse Basketball: The Orange Intersects With Iona On Tuesday Night (itlh.com; Adler)

Duel number two of the 2017-18 campaign is nearly here, as the Syracuse basketball squad hosts Iona from the Carrier Dome.
The SU hoops outfit delivered a relative beat-down to Central New York neighbor Cornell last Friday, with head coach Jim Boeheim and his boys besting JB’s son, Jimmy Boeheim, and the rest of the Big Red.

Now, the ‘Cuse welcomes Iona to town, when the Orange hosts the Gaels on Tuesday evening.

As we’ve documented pretty darn extensively, Syracuse has an abundance of new faces on its current roster, which means it will take some work for them to gel as a cohesive unit. Particularly on the offensive end of the floor.

However, despite this stanza just getting started, SU performed admirably in its 2-3 zone versus Cornell, and I can foresee JB’s vaunted defense becoming a valuable asset as 2017-18 progresses.

Iona, out of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, is no slouch. A year ago, the Gaels sported a
22-13 mark, capturing their conference’s post-season tournament and landing an invite to the Big Dance.

Syracuse men’s basketball opponent preview: What to know about Iona (DO; Gutierrez)

Syracuse (1-0) faces one of its more difficult nonconference opponents of the season Tuesday night, when Iona (0-1) visits the Carrier Dome for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Orange is coming off a season-opening victory over Jimmy Boeheim and Cornell, while the Gaels lost at Albany by two points last week. Iona won the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title last season and lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Oregon.

Here’s what you need to know about Iona before Tuesday night’s matchup.

All-time series: Syracuse leads, 4-0

Last time they played: On Dec. 18, 2010 in the Carrier Dome, SU snuck out an 83-77 victory that bumped the Orange to a perfect 11-0 record. Kris Joseph scored 21 points, Brandon Triche had 14 and Scoop Jardine added 11.

The Iona Report: The Gaels are an up-tempo, 3-point heavy team that finished 22-13 overall and 12-8 in conference a year ago. They earned a No. 14 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Tim Cluess enters his eighth season at the helm of the New Rochelle, New York, school, which led the country in points per game in both the 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons. His offense thrives on the 3-point shot — Iona led the country in 3s made (344) in 2014-15.

D.O. Sportscast episode 9: Sam Fortier breaks down the start of men's basketball season (DO; podcast; Staff, with Sam Fortier)

This week on the D.O. Sportscast, men’s basketball beat writer and sports editor Sam Fortier joins the show to break down the beginning of men’s basketball season. He provides takeaways from the Cornell game, assesses Geno Thorpe’s role on the team and provides an outlook for the Orange’s upcoming schedule.

Episode nine here:

Syracuse Basketball: Who will fill offensive void left by Taurean Thompson? (itlh.com; Esden Jr)

There’s a void offensively for the Syracuse basketball team left by Taurean Thompson. ITLH breaks down who is likely to fill it.

It’s an intriguing question as we pave our way through the young Syracuse basketball season. Who’s going to fill the gap left by one Taurean Thompson?

Everyone expects it to be filled by Tyus Battle. So far it has.

In each of the first three games (two exhibition, one regular season), Battle has led the Orange in scoring.

That won’t be uncommon throughout the season, but this batman desperately needs a robin. Someone to help take some of the load offensively.

Who has best chance to play Robin to @tyusbattle1's Batman this season for @Cuse_MBB offense? @O11_TTRE Frank Howard or Geno Thorpe?

Penn State college student from Upstate NY accused of deleting video in frat death (PS; O'Toole)

A Penn State college student from Upstate New York stood in front of police and secretly deleted crucial video in a fraternity pledge's death, prosecutors alleged Monday.

Braxton Becker, 20, of Niskayuna in Schenectady County, was charged with tampering with physical evidence, obstructing administration of law and hindering apprehension.

He is one of 26 fraternity brothers now facing charges in connection with the party and Piazza's death, according to PennLive.com.

Piazza, 19, died in February from injuries he suffered inside the Beta Theta Pi house from several falls amid an alcohol-fueled party, prosecutors told the news site.
