Welcome to Geographic Information Systems Day!

GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society.

The first formal GIS Day took place in 1999. Esri president and co-founder Jack Dangermond credits Ralph Nader with being the person who inspired the creation of GIS Day. He considered GIS Day a good initiative for people to learn about geography and the uses of GIS. He wanted GIS Day to be a grassroots effort and open to everyone to participate.

Syracuse Pulls Away From Iona Men's Basketball, 71-62 (icgaels.com)

A run in the final five minutes allowed Syracuse to pick up a 71-62 non-conference win against the Iona College men's basketball program this evening at the Carrier Dome as Tyus Battle scored 28 points for the hosts to lead all scorers.

Battle scored 23 of his 28 points in the second half for the Orange (2-0) to go along with five rebounds and three assists. Frank Howard added 15 points, four assists and three rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. Paschal Chukwu hauled in 10 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots. As a team, Syracuse shot 48.1 percent (26-for-54) from the field compared to just 36.7 percent (22-for-60) for the Maroon & Gold (0-2).

Rickey McGill played all 40 minutes for the Gaels towards a team-best 21 points to lead four players in double-figures in addition to six assists, four steals and three rebounds while knocking down five of the team's 10 3-pointers and a 4-for-4 performance from the free throw line. Deyshonee Much contributed 13 points and four assists in 34 minutes of action while TK Edogi fell one rebound shy of a double-double behind 10 points and nine rebounds. Zach Lewis posted 11 points, four assists, two blocks and two steals.

Tyus Battle's career high leads Syracuse over Iona (wthr.com; AP)

It took a while for Syracuse's leading man to get going, but when he did there was no stopping him.

Tyus Battle scored a career-high 28 points, including 23 in the second half, two other Syracuse players scored in double figures and the Orange held off Iona 71-62 on Tuesday.

Frank Howard had 15 points and Oshae Brissett chipped in with 12 for Syracuse (2-0). Paschal Chukwu had 10 rebounds.

Rickey McGill led Iona (0-2) with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Deyshonee Much and Zach Lewis had 13 and 11 points, respectively. The Gaels hit 10 3s in the game.

"He's hard to guard, he's hard to guard," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said of his sophomore guard Battle. "He took over the game."

Battle's play didn't surprise his coach.

"At the end of the year he was playing just like this, but he's more confident, he's stronger, and he knows he's gotta go," Boeheim said. "Last year we had options. Now he's the main guy. Tyus made the plays that had to be made.".

ACC Standings

The saddest thing you’ll see today, at least as far as sports goes, is this picture of the Wake Forest bench after losing to Liberty, at home no less, to fall to 0-2.

It’s frankly a bit pitiful and upsetting to see these guys so distraught but it’s not as if anyone outside the locker room is responsible for the mess they’re in.

Georgia Tech Basketball: Ranking the Jackets in the ACC following the first weekend of the 2017-18 season (yellowjackedup.com; Callaghan-Croley)

The first weekend of the 2017-18 college basketball season is over which means it’s time for the first power ranking of the season but where does the Georgia Tech basketball program come in?
Note: Going forward, power rankings will be posted on Monday afternoons and will take into account games from Monday through Sunday of each week. Since these rankings are being posted on a Tuesday, we will be taking into account games from yesterday, Monday, November 14th.

Top Tier:
The teams in the top tier are the best of the best in the conference and will take unbelievable efforts to beat.

1. Duke Blue Devils (2-0)

The Blue Devils are once again the best team in college basketball and this may be the best roster they’ve had in a while. So far this season they’ve had easy wins over Elon and Utah Valley allowing Coach K to earn win 1,000. On Tuesday night, they’ll face off against the #2 team in the country, Michigan State.

Expect the Blue Devils to be a juggernaut this season and could be the top overall seed come March in the NCAA tournament. It’s going to be hard to beat this Duke team this season and while it may happen a handful of times, don’t let it fool, this Duke to is legitimate and should make a deep run into March, if not winning it all

Does Virginia basketball have its own unicorn with Jay Huff? - ACCSports.com (accsports.com; Mettien)

The long-awaited debut of Jay Huff turned out to be worth the delay for Virginia fans. A glimpse of Huff, the 7-1 redshirt freshman from Durham, put on display some of the guard-like skills and shot blocking ability that had become something close to legendary in UVA circles during his redshirt season.

It also added some entertainment value to a game against an overmatched Austin Peay team that was a blowout pretty much from the start. After not playing in the season-opener versus UNC Greensboro, Huff came off the bench to hit 7-of-8 field goals, for 16 points while grabbing four rebounds and blocking five shots.

Jay Huff, DeAndre Hunter combined to score 29 points on 11 FGA (104.6 eFG%) as UVA defeats Austin Peay https://t.co/bV2NAsKIMQ

He’ll still need to prove himself against better competition, but it was a promising start for a player who has always been highly skilled, but came into college too thin to handle the rigors of ACC hoops. Now it will be interesting to see what Huff can do against better competition, starting Friday at VCU.
